Corneal collagen crosslinking (CXL) with riboflavin and ultraviolet-A light is a method for treating progressive keratectasia. The currently accepted treatment parameters induce collagen crosslinking in the anterior 250 to 350 microm of corneal stroma. Mesoporous SiO2-P2O5 films were synthesized from the vapor phase onto a silicon substrate. First, a precursor solution of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (C16TAB), H3PO4, ethanol, and water was deposited on a silicon substrate by a spin-coating method. Then, the C16TAB-H3PO4 composite film was treated with tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) vapor at 90-180 degrees C for 2.5 h. A simple, direct route to preparation of surface immobilized hydrogel films is described. Specifically, low pressure RF pulsed plasma polymerization of 1-amino-2-propanol and 2-(ethylamino)ethanol monomers produced thin hydrogel films deposited on substrates located in the plasma reactor.
