Catamenial pneumothorax (CP) is a rare entity of spontaneous, recurring pneumothorax in females. Although it has been known to be associated with thoracic endometriosis, varying clinical course and the lack of consistent intraoperative findings have led to conflicting etiological theories. We herein discuss the etiology, clinical course, and surgical treatment of three patients with CP. Three females (aged 40 years, 28 years, and 34 years) had recurrent right-sided spontaneous pneumothoraces that coincided with their menses. They had undergone video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) previo

The authors describe a 16-year-old boy, previously healthy, who was admitted to our hospital for left-sided spontaneous pneumothorax. On physical examination he presented with marfanoid habitus. Pneumothorax was managed conservatively with resolution. Four months later he had a recurrence of left-sided pneumothorax and 1 week after that he presented with contralateral pneumothorax. He underwent video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery twice for bullectomy and pleurodesis. No further recurrence was stated. Additional investigation showed a prolapsed cardiac mitral valve and Marfan syndrome was conf

INTRODUCTION: Endometriosis of the lung and the diaphragm is rare. Patients may present with symptoms such as shortness of breath, chest pain, and shoulder pain or they may be asymptomatic. Of note, there have been few reports of bilateral catamenial disease, and no reports, to our knowledge, of bilateral pathology proven pulmonary parenchymal endometriosis.
CASE: A 43-year-old with stage IV endometriosis and large leiomyoma underwent a laparoscopic hysterectomy and treatment of endometrial lesions in 2005. In March and April of 2011, she presented with bilateral pneumothoraces. She subsequen

We report a case of 26-year-old man with a posterior mediastinal paraganglioma. Although he was asymptomatic, chest abnormal shadow was pointed out by the regular medical screening with chest X-rays. A chest computed tomography (CT) showed a left posterior mediastinal tumor with strong enhancement. He was referred to our hospital for surgery. We tried a video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) for resection of the tumor, but additional small thoracoscopy was necessary for control of bleeding. The patient's vital sign was stable at perioperative course. The histopathological examination revealed

The aim of this case report was to analyse the efficiency of video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) in the treatment of spontaneous pneumothorax. Spontaneous pneumothorax occurs subsequently to a disruption of visceral pleura and escape of air into pleural space. A retrospective study was performed in 5 patients from December 2001 until May 2006. Four procedures for recurrent spontaneous pneumothorax and one procedure for primary spontaneous pneumothorax were performed. The main symptoms in our patients included chest pain (100%), shortness of breath (60%) and cough (10%) In all patients we ma

Pulmonary sequestration is a rare malformation of the respiratory tract. We here report an adult case of intralobar pulmonary sequestration with aberrant artery of the right lower lobe. A 20-year-old man admitted to our hospital with a chest discomfort. Chest computed tomography (CT), angiography, and scintigraphy showed abnormal findings of the right lower lobe with an aberrant artery. Under the diagnosis of pulmonary sequestration, video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) lobectomy was performed. VATS is useful for the operation of pulmonary sequestration.

Recently, thoracoscopic surgery has been shown to be effective for the relief of hand sweating. Although it is not fatal if left untreated, the treatment aim is to improve the quality of daily life. Therefore, it is important to understand the complaints of the patient, and provide an adequate explanation regarding postoperative sequelae. Surgeons should also recognize that thoracoscopic surgery might cause problems when performed, as the general risk of surgery remains. Many patients have been helped by the procedure, as their choices in life have expanded, and satisfactory results can be obt

Until recently, thoracic surgery in France was associated with vascular or cardiac surgery. It is now increasingly performed as a specific activity. Training of a thoracic surgeon has a common part with cardiovascular surgery during a 6-year curriculum including theory and practical practice acquired both by simulation and clinical fellowship. There are 343 board-certified surgeons performing thoracic surgery in 147 authorized centers. To be authorized to perform thoracic surgery, these centers must have at least 2 qualified surgeons and perform a minimum of 40 procedures per year for thoracic

Damage to the thoracic sympathic chain is a rare complication of video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) pleurectomy. We report our experience with a patient who underwent parietal pleurectomy and bullectomy by VATS and postoperatively suffered from palmar anhydrosis and compensatory controlateral hyperhidrosis. The possible mechanisms of nerve damage and various techniques of performing pleurectomy are discussed.

Thoracic injuries are common, occurring in up to 60% of polytrauma patients and represent 25% of trauma deaths. Thoracic trauma frequently involves injury to the pleural space resulting in hemothorax and pneumothorax-effective management of the pleural space is essential. Reviewed in this article is management of the pleural space in chest wall trauma (including pneumothorax and hemothorax), and chest tube placement, indications for video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery, management, and complications.

Introduction and objective: Hemothorax is an umbrella term for pathologies with an extremely wide range of etiology and severity. Most commonly it is of tramuatic origin, frequently iatrogenic (intervention, blood coagulation altering therapy) and rarely unknown. Depending on the cause, volume, and dynamics, it requires a patient-adapted treatment determined by access to certain therapeutical methods. We aim to provide a practical overview of these. Methods: Retrospective analysis of patients treated for haemothorax at the Thoracic Surgery Department of Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County Teaching Hos

Sporadic lymphangioleiomyomatosis is an orphan disease of the young woman. Its clinical manifestations are mainly respiratory, including spontaneous pneumothorax. The management is multidisciplinary. We report the case of a young patient with bilateral spontaneous pneumothorax revealing sporadic lymphangioleiomyomatosis.

Primary chest wall tumors are rare, their common clinical features are not well known, and surgical resection remains the main treatment. Apical chest wall tumors require large skin incisions and dissection of the chest wall muscles, making it difficult to maintain cosmetic appearance, respiratory function, and support of the upper extremity. There are few treatment options and no studies have reported on thoracotomy that spares muscles and preserves cosmetic superiority. However, in benign chest wall tumors in young patients, it is necessary to consider radicality, cosmetic superiority, and m

Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) is now commonly used in emergency surgery to confirm the site of injury and observe the thoracic cavity, especially in cases of chest trauma with stable vital signs. VATS was used in all 33 chest trauma surgeries performed at our department from October 2009 to July 2023. The common injury mechanisms were traffic trauma and falls, but there were also cases of trauma from a bullhorn, heavy machinery and farm equipment, and penetrating injury. The common surgical procedures were treatment of rib fractures and pulmonary suture or partial lung resection,

BACKGROUND: A right-sided aortic arch is a rare congenital vascular structure variation. Right lobectomy is not commonly performed on patients with such a condition. Further, there are no reports on lobectomy under uniportal video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) in this patient group.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 67-year-old man with a right-sided aortic arch and Kommerell diverticulum underwent right upper lobectomy with mediastinal lymph node dissection under uniportal VATS for primary lung cancer. Due to the right descending aorta, which narrows the space of the dorsal hilum, handling of the
