Network meta-analysis of intrathyroidal injection of combined dexamethasone with lidocaine for subacute thyroiditis.

BACKGROUND: Intrathyroidal injection of dexamethasone (Dex) alone (monotherapy) or combined Dex with lidocaine (combination therapy) has been used for treating subacute thyroiditis (SAT). We performed this study to simultaneously determine whether intrathyroidal injection of Dex was better than oral prednisone and whether combination therapy was superior to monotherapy. METHODS: We identified studies from PubMed, Embase, Cochrane library, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), and Wanfang databases through December 31, 2021. Clinical efficacy, recurrence rate, adverse reactions, and

Coexistence of giant cell arteritis and subacute thyroiditis: A case report and literature review.

Giant cell arteritis and subacute thyroiditis are often regarded as clinically distinct diseases with differing pathogenesis. We report a rare case of coexisting giant cell arteritis and subacute thyroiditis that were both successfully managed using glucocorticoid therapy. Ultrasound plays a vital role in the diagnosis and treatment of these diseases. A review of the literature revealed that cases of giant cell arteritis complicated by subacute thyroiditis are very rare, and their pathogenesis and association are still unclear. We summarized the clinical features of giant cell arteritis compli

Subacute thyroiditis associated with thyrotoxic periodic paralysis after COVID-19 vaccination: a case report.

SUMMARY: We report a 26-year-old Japanese man who visited our outpatient clinic presenting fever immediately after i.m. injection of the second dose of a coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccine (Moderna®). At the first visit, the patient had a fever of 37.7°C and a swollen thyroid gland with mild tenderness. He was diagnosed with subacute thyroiditis (SAT) based on the presence of thyrotoxicosis (free tri-iodothyronine, 32.3 pg/mL; free thyroxine, >7.77 ng/dL; and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) < 0.01 μIU/mL), high C-reactive protein level (7.40 mg/dL), negative TSH receptor antibody, a

Post-COVID Subacute Thyroiditis and Bronchiolitis in a Lung Transplant Recipient: A Case Report.

Lung transplant recipients are at risk for life-threatening infections including severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2-associated COVID-19. Several viral infections have been associated with the development of chronic lung allograft dysfunction. Long-term outcomes of COVID-19 on graft function are not known. A 53-year-old female patient, who underwent bilateral lung transplantation 3 years before because of stage IV sarcoidosis and secondary pulmonary hypertension was admitted in the second wave of the pandemic because of COVID-19 with symptoms including dry cough. Chest computed tom

A Case of Thyrotoxicosis due to Simultaneous Occurrence of Subacute Thyroiditis and Graves' Disease.

Subacute thyroiditis is an inflammatory disorder of the thyroid. Graves' disease is an autoimmune thyroid disease in which thyroid hormones are overproduced. Here we present a rare case of thyrotoxicosis due to the simultaneous occurrence of both diseases. Prompt diagnosis and therapy are required to prevent complications in patients with thyrotoxicosis.

[67 Ga-citrate scintigraphy as a determiner in the diagnosis of a subacute thyroiditis].

We present the case of a 41-year-old man admitted to the hospital with fever and toxic syndrome possibly having an oncological or infectious origin. A whole body scan with 67Ga-citrate showed an intense and diffuse radiotracer accumulation in the thyroid gland. The patient was re-evaluated and studied with other diagnostic tests including a thyroid 99mTc-pertechnetate scintigraphy and a thyroidal radioiodine uptake. A correct final diagnosis of painless subacute thyroiditis was made.

[Characteristics and clinical course of patients with subacute thyroiditis without typical signs and symptoms].

To determine the characteristics and clinical course of patients with subacute thyroiditis (SAT) without typical signs and symptoms, clinical and pathologic records of the patients were reviewed and compared with those of patients with typical SAT. During the past 10 years, 11 of 105 patients with SAT did not have enough typical features for a diagnosis of SAT (atypical SAT). They included one male and 10 females with the average age of 50 years. The incidence of neck pain as the initial symptom in the patients with atypical SAT was low (18%) compared with that in the patients with typical SAT

Immunohistochemical and ultrastructural study of subacute thyroiditis, with special reference to multinucleated giant cells.

Twenty-four cases of subacute thyroiditis were examined immunohistochemically and ultrastructurally, with special attention being directed to the multinucleated giant cells that characterize the lesions of this condition. Immunohistochemical study revealed that 99 per cent of the giant cells contained lysozyme, 82 per cent contained vimentin, 66 per cent contained alpha 1-antitrypsin, and 61 per cent contained thyroxine. Only 17 per cent contained thyroglobulin, 5 per cent contained keratin, 16 per cent contained epithelial membrane antigen, and 4 per cent contained leukocyte common antigen. M

Effect of prednisolone and salicylate on serum thyroglobulin level in patients with subacute thyroiditis.

Twelve patients with subacute thyroiditis were divided into two groups and treated with prednisolone or salicylate. The initially elevated T4, T3, free T4 (FT4), free T3 (FT3) and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) were reduced during the early phase within about 4 weeks in both groups. The serum levels of thyroglobulin (Tg) were elevated in both groups treated with salicylate and prednisolone (252 +/- SD 117 ng/ml and 233 +/- SD 157 ng/ml, respectively) at initial examination. The serum level of Tg declined during the early phase with prednisolone treatment, and it reached normal values at

T lymphocyte subsets in autoimmune thyroid diseases and subacute thyroiditis detected with monoclonal antibodies.

Peripheral T lymphocyte subsets were analysed with monoclonal antibodies, by highly standardized fluorescence-activated cell sorter analysis instead of manual counting by the indirect immunofluorescence method, in autoimmune thyroid diseases and subacute thyroiditis. Total lymphocyte counts were increased in patients with thyrotoxic Graves' disease and subacute thyroiditis. The percentage of total T (Leu 1) cells was significantly lower in patients with thyrotoxic Graves' disease and Hashimoto's disease with destructive thyrotoxicosis than in normal subjects. No significant changes were observ

Subacute thyroiditis. Eleven cases with histological confirmation and thyrotrophic response to thyrotrophin releasing hormone.

Eleven cases are reported of subacute thyroiditis with histopathological study; there were 9 females and 2 males. Bacteriological studies were inconclusive. Different stages of pathological involvement were observed at the same time in all patients. The clinical course followed the classical pattern in most cases: hyperthyroid-like, hypothyroid-like phase and recovery. Blood TSH assessment before and after TRH stimulation revealed an early phase of depression unresponsive to TRH, followed by high levels with marked stimulation; during the first phase, radioiodine uptake was low, but was enhanc

Value of the Inflammatory Burden Index in the Diagnosis and Prognosis of Subacute Thyroiditis.

BACKGROUND: This study sought to assess the utility of the inflammatory burden index (IBI) in differentiating subacute thyroiditis (SAT) from Graves' disease (GD) and to investigate its association with recovery time, hepatic function impairment, recurrence, and permanent hypothyroidism in patients with SAT. METHODS: Clinical and laboratory data from 357 adult patients with SAT, 412 patients with GD, and 633 healthy controls were retrospectively analyzed. Determinants influencing recovery time, hepatic function impairment, recurrence, and permanent hypothyroidism in patients with SAT were sys
