[Volvulus of the small bowel due to ascaris lumbricoides package: about a case].

We report an exceptional case of a 7 year-old patient with necrotic small bowel volvulus due to adult ascaris lumbricoides. At the admission, the child had intestinal obstruction evolving since two days with alteration of general state. Abdominal radiography without preparation showed small bowel air-fluid levels and tiger-stripe appearance evoking the diagnosis of acute intestinal obstruction associated with abdominal mass. After resuscitation, the surgical treatment consisted of laparotomy which showed necrotic volvulus of the terminal ileum containing adult ascaris lumbricoides. The patient

Lhermitte-Duclos Disease Treated Surgically in an Elderly Patient: Case Report and Literature Review.

A 75-year-old man with Lhermitte-Duclos Disease (LDD) manifesting as progressive headache is presented. Magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated a right cerebellar mass lesion with the characteristic "tiger-striped appearance". A mild mass effect was evident at the medulla oblongata, accompanied by inferior displacement of the right cerebellar tonsil. Thus, tonsillar herniation was considered the cause of his headache and he underwent partial resection of the tumor to solve tonsillar herniation. His headache gradually improved. LDD in the elderly is quite rare. Several differences in the nature

Mitochondrial membrane protein associated neurodegenration: a novel variant of neurodegeneration with brain iron accumulation.

BACKGROUND: Recently, mutations in an open-reading frame on chromosome 19 (C19orf12) were identified as a novel genetic factor in neurodegeneration with brain iron accumulation (NBIA). Because of the mitochondrial localization of the derived protein, this variant is referred to as mitochondrial membrane protein-associated neurodegeneration with brain iron accumulation (MPAN). METHODS/RESULTS: We describe the clinical phenotype and MRI of 3 newly identified individuals with MPAN due to either previously reported or novel homozygous or compound heterozygous genetic alterations in C19orf12. A potential risk assessment of a dengue outbreak in north central Texas, USA. (Part 1 of 2): Abundance and temporal variation of dengue vectors.

In response to three imported dengue cases in north central Texas as well as increased case numbers in Texas and adjoining Mexican states in 2005, the authors assessed the potential risk of a dengue outbreak in north central Texas by investigating abundance and temporal variation of dengue vectors in 2006. Dengue vector abundance was monitored from 54 sites in Dallas County, Texas, from June to November 2006, using oviposition traps. Both dengue vectors--the yellow fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti, and the Asian tiger mosquito, Aedes albopictus--were present. Of the two, Ae. albopictus was more a

Conservation of wild animals by assisted reproduction and molecular marker technology.

Wild animals are an integral component of the ecosystem. Their decimation due to abrupt natural calamities or due to gradual human intervention would be disastrous to the ecosystem and would alter the balance in nature between various biotic components. Such an imbalance could have an adverse effect on the ecosystem. Therefore, there is an urgent need to put an end to the ever increasing list of endangered species by undertaking both in situ and ex situ conservation using tools of modern biology, to ascertain the degree of genetic variation and reproductive competence in these animals. This re

Notechis scutatus venom increases the yield of proliferating muscle cells from biopsies of normal and dystrophic canine muscle--a possible source for myoblast transfer studies.

The injection of 1 micrograms Notechis scutatus (Australian tiger snake) venom (notexin) induces localized necrosis in the muscles of normal and dystrophic dogs. Biopsies taken from the muscles on the second day of postnecrotic regeneration provide about 8-16 x 10(6) cells capable of proliferation per g tissue, about 100 fold more than the untreated adult dog muscles. Muscle specific markers, such as the capacity of the cells to fuse, surface labelling with N-CAM antibodies (Leu-19 and 5.1.H11), and immunostaining with desmin, indicated that over 90% of the cultivated cells are indeed myogenic

Tremor-Dominant Pantothenate Kinase-associated Neurodegeneration.

Neurodegeneration with brain iron accumulation (NBIA) includes a rare and heterogeneous group of disorders characterized by iron deposition in the basal ganglia. Pantothenate kinase-associated neurodegeneration (PKAN) is the most common NBIA and has 2 main presentations: typical and atypical, the latter rarely presents with tremor. Our reported patients underwent full neurologic examination, standard brain magnetic imaging, and genetic testing for PKAN. Three patients who had "tremor-dominant" PKAN with a relatively benign course were reported, including 1 with dystonic tremor and 2 with parki

Striatal and pontocerebellar hypoperfusion in Hallervorden-Spatz syndrome.

Hallervorden-Spatz syndrome is a group of rare and severe disorders marked by extrapyramidal symptoms and iron accumulation in the globi pallidi, usually visible by magnetic resonance imaging. To assist in determining the functional correlates of these structural abnormalities, positron emission tomography was used to measure regional cerebral blood flows and dopaminergic function in a patient with Hallervorden-Spatz syndrome that manifested as progressive generalized dystonia, optic atrophy, and bilateral pallidal "eye of the tiger" sign. Voxel-by-voxel analysis of positron emission tomograph

Immuno-pathological and Molecular Screening of Rabies Virus in Indian Wild Felids: Unravelling Sylvatic to Urban Spillover.

Rabies poses a fatal threat to humans, domestic animals, and wildlife, with its transmission often exhibiting a wave-like pattern influenced by host population density. Understanding the dynamics of reservoir hosts is critical to elucidating the spatial distribution and transmission pathways of the virus. Between 2014 and 2017, brain specimens from various wild felids in India - including tigers, lions, leopards, and other species-were screened for rabies. Of the 68 samples examined, one jungle cat (73-P/15) and one leopard (01-CD/16) tested positive, representing 2.94% of the total. The infec…

Spontaneous proliferative and neoplastic lesions in thyroid and parathyroid glands of nondomestic felids.

Based on microscopic and immunohistochemical characterization, we documented spontaneous proliferative and neoplastic lesions in the thyroid and parathyroid glands of nondomestic felids. Ten animals (4 leopards, 3 tigers, and 3 cougars), all with a previous diagnosis of thyroid neoplasia were identified from the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine database. The mean age of affected animals was 15.9 y. Twelve neoplasms were identified; 2 animals had 2 concurrent neoplasms. After immunohistochemical characterization using a panel of chromogranin A, thyroglobulin, and calcitoni…

Trichothiodystrophy Identified in a Child with an Odontogenic Infection.

Trichothiodystrophy (TTD) is a rare genetic disorder with a high mortality rate among pediatric patients, primarily as a result of related infections. Its defining clinical feature is brittle, dry hair, with broken hair shafts revealing "tiger-tail banding". Other common characteristics include photosensitivity, scaly skin and stunted growth. The disorder's rarity and variety of symptoms pose diagnostic challenges, yet early diagnosis and treatment can improve a patient's overall health and quality of life. The purpose of this report is to describe the case of an underweight five-year-old boy

[Climate change and vector-borne disease-significance for intensive care and emergency medicine].

Tropical diseases are becoming increasingly important in medical care in Germany due to climate change and the spread of vectors and viruses. The widely distributed Culex mosquitoes in Germany can transmit the West Nile virus, which causes West Nile fever. Severe neuroinvasive disease courses with acute flaccid paralysis, meningitis, and encephalitis are possible. The invasive tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus) is increasingly establishing itself in Germany and is a potent vector of viruses that have so far occurred mainly in tropical-subtropical areas, including dengue and chikungunya virus. Diagnosis and Treatment of Lower Motor Neuron Disease in Australian Dogs and Cats.

Diseases presenting with lower motor neuron (LMN) signs are frequently seen in small animal veterinary practice in Australia. In addition to the most common causes of LMN disease seen world-wide, such as idiopathic polyradiculoneuritis and myasthenia gravis, there are several conditions presenting with LMN signs that are peculiar to the continent of Australia. These include snake envenomation by tiger (Notechis spp.), brown (Pseudonaja spp.), and black snakes (Pseudechis spp.), tick paralysis associated with Ixodes holocyclus and Ixodes coronatus, and tetrodotoxins from marine animals such as
