Imaging depth extension of optical coherence tomography in rabbit eyes using optical clearing agents.

Optical coherence tomography has become an indispensable diagnostic tool in ophthalmology for imaging the retina and the anterior segment of the eye. However, the imaging depth of optical coherence tomography is limited by light attenuation in tissues due to optical scattering and absorption. In this study of rabbit eye both ex vivo and in vivo, optical coherence tomography imaging depth of the anterior and posterior segments of the eye was extended by using optical clearing agents to reduce multiple scattering. The sclera, the iris, and the ciliary body were clearly visualized by direct appli

Vasospastic Angina Masquerading as Plaque Erosion on Optical Coherence Tomography.

BACKGROUND: Myocardial infarction with nonobstructive coronary arteries has diverse mechanisms, and reliance on intracoronary imaging alone may lead to misdiagnosis. CASE SUMMARY: A 70-year-old man presented with non-ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction. Coronary angiography showed no significant stenosis, whereas optical coherence tomography (OCT) demonstrated an intraluminal thrombus over a lipid-rich plaque with an intact fibrous cap, suggesting plaque erosion. After treatment including a β-blocker, he developed recurrent chest pain 2 months later. Repeat angiography was unchanged, b

Anterior segment optical coherence tomography: a tool for infectious keratitis.

Infectious keratitis (IK) is a serious vision-threatening ophthalmologic emergency that can lead to irreversible complications such as blindness or corneal scarring. IK can be caused by various types of microorganisms, including bacteria, fungi, protozoa, and viruses, which can cause an inflammatory response and penetrate deep into the cornea, leading to perforation in addition to scarring and ulceration. Given the need for thorough and rapid evaluation of patients with IK, effective ophthalmic imaging techniques that provide both quantitative and qualitative information are essential clinicia

Pupil wobble in point-scanning retinal optical coherence tomography systems.

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) systems utilize 2D scanning methods to acquire reflectance-based volumetric images of samples, such as the human retina, with micrometer-scale depth resolution. A common method for performing this scanning at high speeds is to use a pair of sequential, single-axis galvanometer scanners. An undesired effect of using separated scanners is the variation in the beam position at the pupil plane, a phenomenon known as beam wander or pupil wobble. This can lead to loss of signal and vignetting artifacts in the resulting images. To overcome these limitations, we prop

Metadata-enhanced contrastive learning from retinal optical coherence tomography images.

Deep learning has potential to automate screening, monitoring and grading of disease in medical images. Pretraining with contrastive learning enables models to extract robust and generalisable features from natural image datasets, facilitating label-efficient downstream image analysis. However, the direct application of conventional contrastive methods to medical datasets introduces two domain-specific issues. Firstly, several image transformations which have been shown to be crucial for effective contrastive learning do not translate from the natural image to the medical image domain. Secondl
