BACKGROUND: Reconstruction following excision of intraoral tumours presents a challenge to the head and neck surgeon. The purpose of hte present study was to review the authors' initial experience with the temporalis muscle flap.

In 22 patients retroperitoneal nonorganic tumors, considered to be primary, proved to be metastatic. Prior to surgery the character of neoplasms was recognized only in 4 patients. Due to unwarranted efforts of "radical" removal of tumors 2 of 4 patients died. In 3 cases neoplasms were urgently removed due to internal hemorrhage and obstruction. Mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) is a B cell neoplasm that most often shows a diffuse growth pattern. Two cases of MCL are reported here, both with a previous diagnosis of lymphoid hyperplasia. Traditionally, risk factors for the development of tonsil cancer include the use of alcohol and/or tobacco, however a significant proportion of new cases develop in young patients without these risk factors. Vascular blowouts are devastating complications of head and neck oncologic surgery that are easily diagnosed with oropharyngeal or external bleeding.
