Non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) comprise 7-10% of all malignant tumors in childhood. Early systems of classification (Rappaport, Luke-Collins) have been improved with the Working Formulation. NHL are classified into low, intermediate and high-grade disease. Head and neck manifestations of Burkitt's lymphoma are encountered in less than a quarter of the reported cases and usually present as cervical adenopathy. Metastatic growths on palatine tonsils are very scarce if compared with primordial tumors of this sitting. Report of a case, in a 56-year-old woman, who 6 months after being operated from a left nephrectomy for hypernephroma presented a metastasis of clair renal cells on the right tonsil. Given the peculiarity of such a case we look through the literature of tonsil metastases and discuss the differential diagnosis regarding these type of lesions, sometimes encountered in our daily practice.

OBJECTIVES: This study was conducted to provide a review of the prognostic factors of tonsillar carcinoma.
DESIGN: A retrospective analysis.
SETTING/PATIENTS: Patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the tonsil, treated in Northern Alberta, at the Cross Cancer Institute from 1975 to 1995 were analyzed using a population-based, head and neck cancer registry. There were 102 patients, 73 male and 29 female, ranging in age from 35 years to 83 years, with a mean of 60 years. The development of the pharyngeal pouches was studied in early human embryos. A vesicular thymus primordium, separated from the lining epithelium of the second pouch, is described in 5-week-old embryo's (9 mm stage). This transitory structure disappeared in the next stage (10 mm). Much later--in the 9th week, the first branched and solid crypt developed in the same region, from the same epithelium, and in a similar way to a gland. Metastasis to the oral cavity from melanoma arising in distant sites is very rare. The authors present three cases of melanoma metastatic to the palatine tonsil: two were cutaneous melanomas and one arose from the mucous membrane of the hard palate. A case of giant amyloidoma in the left tonsil with extensive osseous metaplasia and a scanty and patchy monoclonal population of IgG Kappa plasma cells, is presented. Localized tumoral amyloidosis is a rare, benign tumour of the upper aerodigestive tract. Organ-limited amyloidosis has been shown to be confined to various systems but, since the lesion was first described, only four cases situated in the tonsils have been reported in the English literature, and none of these had either osseous metaplasia or a monoclonal population of IgG Kappa plasma cells.

OBJECTIVE: To present illustrative cases showing various tonsillar influences on speech and to present a clinical method for patient evaluation establishing concepts of management and a rational therapeutic approach.
DESIGN: The cases were selected from a group of approximately 1000 patients referred to the clinic because of suspected palatal diseases. Enlarged tonsils and adenoids have been implicated in dentofacial development and in the developing facial configuration. The growth pattern and the role of these lymphoid tissues are controversial, as are the benefits to be gained by their surgical removel.
