Labiomandibular paresthesia caused by endodontic treatment: an anatomic and clinical study.

Labiomandibular paresthesia after root canal treatment is an accident that is still too frequent despite the development of new endodontic techniques. The aim of this anatomical and clinical study is to advance the understanding of how accidents occur so as to avoid them. This anatomical study made it possible to determine the variability of proximity of the apex of the tooth root to the mandibular bundle, as well as the relationship between the nerve and its satellite artery, and to understand how endodontic filling material spreads into the cancellous bone. The clinical study, which included

Microscopic evaluation of induced tooth movement after subluxation trauma: an experimental study in rats.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to assess the histological alterations that occurred in the periodontal area of rat molars submitted to induced tooth movement (ITM) right after an intentional trauma (subluxation). METHODS: Forty adult male Wistar rats (Rattus norvegicus albinus) were selected. The animals were divided into eight groups (n=5), according to the combination of variables: Group 1--control (neither trauma nor ITM); Group 2--ITM; Groups 3, 4, 5 and 6--dentoalveolar trauma groups corresponding, respectively, to 1, 3, 8 and 10 days after trauma; Groups 7 and 8 - the animal

Light microscopic study of periapical lesions associated with asymptomatic apical periodontitis.

The purpose of the study has been to evaluate the degree of chronic inflammation in tissues surrounding the apex of the tooth root in patients with apical periodontitis in the remission phase. The material included 37 apical granulomas and radicular cysts obtained as a result of apiectomy, and 20 teeth which were removed together with the focus of the periapical inflammation. Routine histological techniques, as well as the immunofluorescent and immuno-chemical methods were used to examine the material. Despite the absence of clinical symptoms in 23 of 57 cases, the morphological signs of chron

Response of erupting human second premolars to blood flow changes.

The effect of infiltration of a vasodilator and a vasoconstrictor [2% lidocaine (lignocaine) without or with 1:100,000 adrenaline (epinephrine)] above the root apex of human second premolars in the prefunctional stage of post-emergent eruption was evaluated for 11 teeth in eight children. On two consecutive days, 30 min of high-resolution data on changes in tooth position were collected for each participant during each of four sessions, two in the afternoon and two in the evening, using an optical instrument based on Moiré magnification with 0.05 microm resolution. The immediate reaction to th

Atypical Mandibular Angle Fracture.

The mandibular fracture takes the second position among facial bones fractures, with significant increase of cases in the last years. The aim of this paper is to report a clinical case of a patient with facial trauma due to an automotive accident, resulting in an atypical fracture in a unilateral mandibular angle. In the image examinations an atypical favorable fracture in the right mandibular angle region involving the apex of the erupted 48 tooth was found. The fracture line started in the posterior region of mandibular ramus, below mandibular condyle, and spread out until inferior border of

Facial cutaneous sinuses of dental origin - a diagnostic challenge.

It is common for practitioners to misdiagnose the cause of facial cutaneous sinus tracts, failing to recognise that many have an odontogenic cause. Chronic infection around the apex of a dental root can drain to the mouth or less commonly to the skin via a sinus tract. Dental symptoms are not always present and this confuses the clinical picture further. Failure to identify an odontogenic cause may result in unnecessary and ineffective treatment. Elimination of dental infection via tooth extraction or root canal treatment leads to resolution of the cutaneous sinus. We present a series of cutan

[Histologic observation of upper central incisors after surgical immediate torsion].

The purpose of this study is to verify the treatment results of rotated teeth by using surgical immediate torsion method. Seven upper central incisors in four monkeys were chosen in our experiment. The surgical treatment was accomplished by rotating the teeth in about 45 degree. The animals were sacrificed at 2, 3, 4 and 12 weeks after operation. The results showed that two of seven dental pulps were necrosis, three were injured and two were normal. Absorption of dental cementum and dentine occurred at the apex and the middle third of the root. There was no evidence of ankylosis between the to

Restoration and retention of maxillary anteriors with severe root resorption.

BACKGROUND: The authors describe the treatment of three patients who had severe apical root resorption of maxillary lateral incisors caused by ectopically erupting canines. Ectopically erupting canines derive from a normal path of eruption and may cause resorption of the adjacent teeth. CASE DESCRIPTION: The authors present the three cases of severe root resorption caused by ectopically erupting canines. They then discuss various prosthetic options; the indications, advantages and disadvantages of various treatment modalities; the long-term retention and esthetic concerns of the patients; and

Anatomical evaluation of the relationship between the maxillary posterior teeth and maxillary sinus.

Knowledge of the anatomical relationships between the maxillary sinus (MS) and posterior teeth is important to prevent complications when endodontic or oral surgical procedures are performed. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationships between the root apices of maxillary posterior teeth and the MS floor. Three oral radiologists evaluated 851 posterior teeth (1969 roots) imaged with cone beam computed tomography. The roots were analyzed individually in parasagittal sections, on which the most superior point of the apex was observed. A qualitative evaluation was performed, and each

An evaluation of root resorption after orthodontic treatment.

Root resorption is commonly seen, albeit in varying degrees, in cases that have been treated orthodontically. In this retrospective study the objective was to compare the amount of root resorption observed after active orthodontic treatment had been completed with one of three different appliance systems, namely, Tip Edge, Modified Edgewise and Damon. The sample consisted of pre and post-treatment cephalograms of sixty eight orthodontic cases. Root resorption of the maxillary central incisor was assessed from pre- and post- treatment lateral ce phalograms using two methods. In the first, overa

Longitudinal post-eruptive mandibular tooth movements of males and females.

Unbiased estimates of post-eruptive eruption and migration of the mandibular teeth for large representative samples are presently unavailable. The purpose of this study was to evaluate pure tooth movements of untreated children and adolescents longitudinally. Lateral cephalograms of 214 French-Canadians, followed bi-annually between 8 and 15 years of age, were traced, and the positions of the mandibular permanent central incisors and first molars were digitized. Temporal changes in tooth position were evaluated relative to naturally stable mandibular reference structures, using the mandibular

Apical root resorption of upper incisors during the torquing stage of the tip-edge technique.

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether treatment with the Tip-Edge appliance resulted in more apical root resorption (ARR) of the central and lateral incisors during the torquing (third stage) than the non-torquing phases (first two stages) of orthodontic treatment. The three stages of this orthodontic technique make it possible to examine the amount of root shortening during torque separately from other types of tooth movement. The ARR ratio was calculated in 31 Caucasian patients (20 females, 11 males), after the non-torquing stage of treatment and after the torquing phase, by
