Visual and radiographic examination of maxillary tooth development was undertaken in a group of 76 Hereford cross Friesian steers, all but one slaughtered at the same weight (464 kg). Differences were found in the stages of second molar intraoral development between the various age groups. Radiographic inspection showed that stages of resorption of the temporary premolar roots and crown and root formation of the permanent cheek teeth varied with age. The maximum age range before animals could be differentiated into age groups using radiographic examination of maxillary tooth development was th

This study presents quantitative data on the rates of anterior tooth wear in a Pleistocene human population. The data were obtained for the hominin sample of the Sima de los Huesos site in Atapuerca, Spain. The fossil record belongs to a minimum of 28 individuals of the same biological population, assigned to the species Homo heidelbergensis. We have estimated the original and the preserved crown height of the mandibular incisors (I1 and I2) of 11 individuals, whose age at death can be ascertained from the mineralization stage and tooth eruption. Results provide a range of 0.276-0.348 and 0.28

The purpose of this study was to assess the long-term success of partial pulpotomy in traumatized permanent incisors. Seven years before this examination, 63 teeth that had been treated by partial pulpotomy six months to four years earlier were examined. At that stage, four teeth had pulp necrosis. The remaining 59 cases were recalled for re-examination. Of these, 40 were available for assessment 7.5 to 11 years after the partial pulpotomy treatment. Thirty-five of these teeth were successful, while the remaining five had root canal fillings, and three of them were restored by post and crowns.

Class V cervical lesions are often observed in older patients during their treatment planning phase, resulting from root caries, toothbrush … depth of the lesion will threaten the periodontium, dental pulp, and the occlusal integrity of the tooth crown. In addition, cemental lesions are often associated with increased levels of hypersensitivity. Historically, dentistry treated root lesions with direct gold, gold or porcelain inlays, amalgam alloys and crowns, all relying on resistance and retentio …

It has been suggested that the variation in the morphology of the human periodontium may be related to the shape and form of the teeth. Furthermore, the severity of symptoms of periodontal disease have been proposed to differ among these various morphologic entities or "biotypes". The aim of the present study was (i) to identify individuals with markedly different crown forms and (ii) to determine probing pocket depth, probing attachment level and amount of gingival recession that had occurred at different teeth and tooth surfaces in such individuals. Clinical photographs of the maxillary inci

BACKGROUND: Tooth wear has been reported to be on the increase worldwide. More importantly, tooth wear was found to be considerably high and severer among People Living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) compared to HIV negative counterparts. Moreover, there is scarcity of information on tooth wear and associated risk factors. Specifically, no single study has been done in Rwanda to provide baseline data on this topic.
AIM: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of tooth wear and associated risk factors among PLWHA in Rwanda.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among two hundred

Bleaching is a viable treatment alternative to attempt esthetic improvement of discolored teeth. Natural tooth structure as opposed to a veneer or crown margin is considerably superior in tissue response. Caution has to be exercised in selecting cases and advising patients of the possibilities from bleaching and that bleaching may not be entirely successful or lasting. It still should be considered as a treatment of first choice. If applied properly and in carefully selected cases the results can be very rewarding for the dentist and especially the patient. OBJECTIVE: This study utilized finite element analysis to investigate stress distribution in fragmented teeth treated with fragment reattachment technique(FRT).
STUDY DESIGN: Four complex crown fracture models were constructed using maxillary imaging data. Four restoration methods were devised: direct reattachment (GA), reattachment with a fiber post (GB), complete crown restoration (GC), and post-core crown restoration (GD).
RESULTS: Comparison of stress distribution revealed that for identical fracture lines, the GB method had a significantly higher peak von Mises stress (VMS) in dentin th

UNLABELLED: Ectopic eruption with impaction of maxillary permanent canine teeth is a frequently encountered clinical problem. Surgical exposure and attachment of a gold chain to impacted maxillary canines is often required in order to bring them into the dental arch and to allow good alignment. The principle of radiographic parallax is employed to determine whether the impacted canine is placed buccal or palatal to adjacent teeth. Good flap design allows adequate access to the impacted tooth. Bone removal should be adequate to free the impacted crown to its greatest circumference. An orthodont

Enamel histology may provide valuable insights into dental growth and life history traits. However, this method presents significant challenges for extinct species, particularly as the periodicity of the increments observed cannot be tested experimentally. Here, we propose a standardized methodological framework to formalize what has been done in the literature and help researchers working with fossil taxa. We applied this framework to a fossil dataset composed of 19 molars belonging to four species of Toxodontia (Notoungulata, Mammalia) - an extinct sub-order of South American notoungulates k

BACKGROUND: Crowns for primary molars are preformed and come in a variety of sizes and materials to be placed over decayed or developmentally defective teeth. They can be made completely of stainless steel (know as 'preformed metal crowns' or PMCs), or to give better aesthetics, may be made of stainless steel with a white veneer cover or made wholly of a white ceramic material. In most cases, teeth are trimmed for the crowns to be fitted conventionally using a local anaesthetic. However, in the case of the Hall Technique, PMCs are pushed over the tooth with no local anaesthetic, carious tissue

OBJECTIVES: To develop a robotic system for full crown tooth preparation and to evaluate its preparation accuracy and operation time.
METHODS: The robotic system comprised a robotic arm, an infrared optical tracking system, and proprietary planning/control software. The planning workflow encompassed path planning for axial and occlusal surfaces, functional cusp bevels, and acute line angles, culminating in the generation of an ideal preparation morphology. Twenty-two standardized partial dentition models of mandibular teeth 35-37 were additively manufactured and equally allocated into two exp

Objectives: This study aimed to investigate preventive management strategies and optimal intervention timing for dental ankylosis of primary teeth complicated by suspected pre-eruptive intracoronal resorption (PEIR), providing an evidence-based framework for clinical diagnosis and management. Methods: This case retrospectively reports a 7-year-old patient with an ankylosed mandibular left second primary molar (tooth 75), exhibiting radiographic features suggestive of pre-eruptive intracoronal resorption. The patient was in the mixed dentition stage with dental crowding. Preventive and intercep

This case report describes the replacement of a missing maxillary right central incisor (tooth number 8) with a supernumerary tooth using cone beam computed tomography based digital planning, a three-dimensional printed donor replica tooth, osseodensification, and connective tissue grafting. A 36-year-old male presented with general periodontitis and a healed socket in the number 8 region 3 months postavulsion. Based on cone beam computed tomography scans, auto-transplantation of a single-rooted mandibular supernumerary tooth into a surgically created socket in the number 8 region was planned.

Intraosseous verrucous carcinoma (IOVC) arising from an odontogenic cyst is extremely rare. We report a case of intraosseous verrucous carcinoma in a 74-year-old male who presented with a left mandibular swelling with recurrent pus discharge from gingiva of tooth #35. Panoramic radiography revealed an impacted tooth #34 and a large well-defined, radiolucent lesion surrounding the crown of tooth #34. The clinical diagnosis was an infected dentigerous cyst. Surgical excision of the cyst together with extraction of tooth #34 was performed. Histopathological examination showed proliferation of hyp

Dentigerous cyst is a developmental odontogenic cyst, which apparently develops by accumulation of fluid between reduced enamel epithelium and the tooth crown of an unerupted tooth. When observed with erupted and complete dentition the diagnosis is a surprise; as about 95% of dentigerous cysts involve the permanent dentition and only 5% are associated with supernumerary teeth. The usual age of clinical presentation of dentigerous cyst due to supernumerary tooth is during the first four decades. Mesiodens is a supernumerary tooth situated between the maxillary central incisors. More frequently …
