Therapeutic ultrasound applications in craniofacial growth, healing and tissue engineering.

Previous reports have shown that therapeutic ultrasound enhances healing of fractured bone as well as cut tendons. Moreover, it has been shown that therapeutic ultrasound enhances bone formation during distraction osteogenesis that is also known as Ilizarove technique. It has been recently reported that therapeutic ultrasound enhances tooth formation and eruption during mandible distraction osteogenesis in rabbits. This enhanced tooth formation and eruption was caused by new dental tissue formation, known as dentin and cementum. This led to a clinical trial in human that showed that therapeuti

Interdisciplinary treatment including forced extrusion and reintrusion of a traumatized mandibular incisor for a patient with Class II Division 1 skeletal open bite.

A woman with Class II Division 1 long-face syndrome characteristics had a history of facial trauma, dentoalveolar fracture of her mandibular anterior teeth, and temporomandibular joint pain. The pretreatment apical radiograph showed a large area of external root resorption of the mesial surface of the mandibular left central incisor. To arrest the external root resorption, the mandibular left central incisor was extruded. During extrusion, sequential apical radiographs were taken. As the tooth moved away from the site of osteoclastic activity, resorption ceased, and repair took place on the ro

Deposition of calcified tissue around an overextended gutta-percha cone: case report.

Root canal treatment was performed in a mandibular right second premolar with a periapical lesion and apical resorption. The root canal was prepared with K-files using the step-back technique and 3% NaOCl as an irrigant; during obturation gross overfilling of gutta-percha occurred. The tooth was permanently restored with a post and core along with a crown. Although healing of the periapical lesion occurred and the patient reported that he was symptom-free, the tooth was extracted after 4 years because of a subgingival root fracture. Following extraction the tooth was examined with SEM. The exa

Impact of different axial wall designs on the fracture strength and stress distribution of ceramic restorations in mandibular first molar.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to investigate the fracture strength and stress distribution of four ceramic restorations. METHOD … of the full crown and occlusal veneer groups were mainly ceramic fractures and some were restorable tooth fractures. The short AWH crown and occlusal distal veneer groups presented with three fracture modes, the proportion of non-restorable tooth fracture was higher. The results of FEA show that under the spherical loading condition, the stress of ceramic was con …

Mandibular Fracture Associated with a Dentigerous Cyst: Report of a Case and Literature Review.

Background and aims . Pathological fractures are rare in the maxillofacial region and account for less than 2% of all fractures in this site. They are defined as fractures that take place when bone has been weakened by an underlying pathologic process. Among all pathoses, cysts (although so common in the maxillofacial region) constitute a very small part. Here we report a case of a dentigerous cyst in a 38-year-old man.The cyst was associated with a mandibular second premolar tooth and resulted in a pathologic fracture. Excision of the lesion was performed and bony union was observed after 6 m

Comparison of intraoral radiography and cone-beam computed tomography for the detection of horizontal root fractures: an in vitro study.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to compare the diagnostic accuracy of two different cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) units with several intraoral radiography techniques for detecting horizontal root fractures. METHODS: The study material comprised 82 extracted human maxillary incisors without root fractures that had not undergone any root canal treatment. Root fractures were created in the horizontal plane in 31 teeth by a mechanical force using a hammer with the tooth placed on a soft foundation as described in a previous study. The teeth were divided into two groups: a control group with n

NA0D - The new Traumatic Dental Injury classification of the World Health Organization.

An accurate, clear, and easy-to-use traumatic dental injury (TDI) classification and definition system is a prerequisite for proper diagnosi … tissues; infraction, concussion, and subluxation were not coded; most TDIs lacked description; and tooth fractures were described through bone fracture descriptions (e.g., comminuted, compression, and fissured fractures). These limitations led to TDI mis-reporting, under-reporting, and non-specific reporting by untrained non-dental healthcare providers. In addit …

Effect of inadequate ferrule segment location on fracture resistance of endodontically treated teeth.

INTRODUCTION: The circumferential 2 mm ferrule during the fabrication of the crown is strongly advocated for the long-term clinical success. During the routine clinical practice, the dentist encounters the endodontically treated tooth (ETT) with inadequacy of the ferrule in some segment due to caries, abrasion, and erosions. The aim of this in vitro study was to investigate the consequence of inadequate segmental ferrule location on fracture strength of the root canal-treated anterior and posterior teeth. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty each maxillary canine and mandibular premolar intact human

Unsuccessful Treatment of Atrophic Mandible Fracture by Use of Improper Materials.

Fractures of atrophic mandibles are present on the day by day of buccomaxillofacial surgeons. Mandible atrophy occurs due to tooth loss, which over time induces bone resorption leading to a fragile and susceptible to fracture structure. This paper reports the case of a patient victim of face trauma resulting in atrophic mandible fracture with treatment failure through the use of shared load miniplate. Therefore, a new treatment was performed with miniplate of system 2.4 along with bone graft. After 6 months, the patient was rehabilitated with implant-supported prosthesis installation. It is co

In vitro assessment of fracture resistance of endodontically treated teeth restored with short fiber reinforced resin based composite and ceramic overlays.

BACKGROUND: Conventional full-coverage crowns are used after endodontic treatment to enhance the fracture toughness of these teeth. However, these crowns lead to extensive loss of tooth structure. Continuous trials to develop a biomimetic conservative direct restorative material that can be used as a dentine substitute led to the development of the short fiber reinforced resin composite. METHODS: Fifty extracted intact upper premolar teeth were selected. Ten teeth serve as positive control without any treatment (Group 1). The remaining forty teeth were received root canal therapy. Standardize

Biomechanics of Tooth-Supported Fixed Dental Prostheses: Material Systems, Connector Design, Retainer Design, and Abutment Stress Distribution-A Systematic Review of In Vitro and Finite Element Evidence.

Background: Tooth-supported fixed dental prostheses (FDPs) remain relevant when implant therapy is limited, but their mechanical behavior depends on material selection, connector design, retainer design, prosthesis configuration, and abutment support. This systematic review assessed how these factors affect fracture behavior and stress transmission in tooth-supported FDPs. Materials and Methods: PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, Web of Science Core Collection, and Dentistry and Oral Sciences Source were searched for English-language studies published from 1 January 2016 to 15 May 2026. Periodontal and endodontic perspectives of vertical root fracture: A case report.

A 35-year-old patient reported with sharp pain on biting and sensitivity to cold concerning the first right premolar. On recording the history, clinical examination and tests such as vitality, bite test, transillumination, periodontal probing and radiographs a diagnosis of cracked tooth syndrome (CTS) was made. The root canal treatment was completed, but the patient did not turn up for the coronal restoration, resulting in a vertical root fracture and extraction. VRF's (Vertical Root Fracture) are more commonly encountered following endodontic treatment. Also, in teeth without endodontic treat

Intentional Replantation with an Atraumatic Extraction System in Teeth with Extensive Cervical Resorption.

External cervical resorption (ECR) often renders a tooth nonrestorable, especially if it extends deeply within the dental hard tissue. Intentional replantation is sometimes performed as the last resort to save the tooth but may limit conventional forceps extraction because of the high risk of periodontal ligament cell damage or crown fracture. This case report describes the intentional replantation of an upper central incisor with extensive ECR using an axial, atraumatic extraction system to save the otherwise hopeless tooth. The patient was an asymptomatic 37-year-old man with no contributing

Dental abnormalities in rats after a single large dose of cyclophosphamide.

Delayed drug-related mortality in rats treated with a single high dose (75 mg/kg) of cyclophosphamide complicated experiments using this drug treatment. We observed that this delayed mortality was due to dental abnormalities including broken teeth, absent teeth, extra long teeth, and/or supernumerary teeth. These dental abnormalities developed about 140 days after treatment and, if left untreated, interfered with eating. Eventually, the untreated rats starved. Clipping their long teeth and feeding the rats powdered chow eliminated the deaths. Researchers should be aware that high doses of cycl

Long waiting time before tooth extraction may increase delayed wound healing in elderly Japanese.

UNLABELLED: In osteoporosis patients receiving antiresorptive medications, stopping the drug and delaying tooth extraction has been suggested to reduce the risk of osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ). However, postponing tooth extraction for ≥ 2 months was associated with an increased risk of delayed wound healing beyond 8 weeks after extraction, a risk factor for developing ONJ. INTRODUCTION: A long waiting time before tooth extraction could result from concern about a potential increased risk of osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ) in osteoporosis patients. We clarified whether a long waiting time bef
