The purpose of the present article was to report a case of central giant cell granuloma (CGCG) associated with intralesional corticosteroid injections. Although benign, the CGCG may be locally aggressive, causing extensive bone destruction, tooth displacement, and root resorption. The common therapy is surgery, which may result in important facial deformity and loss of teeth or dental germs. In this article, an 8-year-old girl who presented with maxillary CGCG was treated with a solution of equal parts of triamcinolone actinide (10 mg/ml) and 0.5% bupivacaine injected into the lesion for a per

OBJECTIVE: The study objective was to identify bacteria responsible for facial cellulitis of dental origin.
DESIGN: Adult patients, admitted for facial cellulitis of dental origin were included. The pus sample was taken by swabbing during the surgical incision and drainage performed under general anesthesia. The bacteriological diagnosis was performed by microscopic examination and bacterial culture in aerobic and anaerobic atmosphere.
RESULTS: Two hundred and seven bacterial species were isolated from 100 samplings, that is to say 2.07 bacterial species per sample. 19% of the samples contai

Adult stem cells have been reported to exist in various tissues. The isolation of high-quality human stem cells that can be used for regeneration of fatal deseases from accessible resources is an important advance in stem cell research. In the present study, we identified a novel stem cell, which we named tooth germ progenitor cells (TGPCs), from discarded third molar, commonly called as wisdom teeth. We demonstrated the characterization and distinctiveness of the TGPCs, and found that TGPCs showed high proliferation activity and capability to differentiate in vitro into cells of three germ la…

The aim of this study was to determine the correlation between congenitally missing third molar tooth germs and sagittal maxillomandibular jaw dimensions in orthodontic patients in Japan. The subjects were 391 patients from the orthodontic clinic of the Hokkaido University Dental Hospital who were less than 15 years of age. Assessments were made from panoramic radiographs and lateral cephalograms. The subjects were divided into a maxillary/mandibular third molar absent and an existent group. The ANB angle and the sagittal dimensions of the nasal floor (ANS-PNS), maxillary basal bone (Mx), mand…

AIM: To determine whether unilateral preferent chewing (UPC) affects the position and angulation of the permanent maxillary canine germ on the preferred side.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In a retrospective cross-sectional study, medical records from children 7.91(± 0.8) years old with unilateral preferred chewing side and unilateral posterior crossbite were selected. The position of the maxillary canines was analysed by measuring the following angles and distances: the angles formed between the canine axis and the midline (PS; potential impact range > 15°), and that between the canine axis and the

An aggressive form of localized juvenile periodontitis (LJP) in a 12-year old West African female is reported. The case was treated with scaling, root planing, debridement, and tetracycline therapy, which resulted in complete resolution of the disease, including elimination of periodontal inflammation, regeneration of lost periodontal structures, and spontaneous repositioning of teeth that had pathologically migrated. A hopelessly involved mandibular right first molar was successfully replaced by an incompletely developed maxillary third molar tooth bud whose roots and pulp structure continued

Junctional epithelium (JE), which is derived from odontogenic epithelial cells immediately after eruption, is believed to be gradually replaced by oral gingival epithelium (OGE) over a lifetime. However, the detailed process of replacement remains unclear. The aim of the present study was to clarify the process of JE replacement by OGE cells using a green fluorescent protein (GFP)-positive tooth germ transplantation method. GFP-positive JE was partly replaced by OGE cells and completely replaced on day 200 after transplantation, whereas there was no difference in the expression of integrin β4 …

The purpose of this study was to examine the vascular network beneath the reduced enamel epithelium (REE) and oral epithelium (OE) during tooth eruption. Using the corrosive-resin casting method, vascular resin casts were prepared from premolar and molar teeth of the dog and examined by scanning electron microscopy. The vascular network beneath the REE is arranged in two layers, an inner layer consisting of a dense capillary network and an outer layer composed primarily of arterioles and venules. Throughout tooth eruption, the configuration of the vessels of the inner layer is continually chan

The dental follicle (DF), most often associated with unerupted teeth, is a condensation of ectomesenchymal cells that surrounds the tooth germ in early stages of tooth development. In the present study, we aim to isolate epithelial stem-like cells from the human DF and explore their potential differentiation into salivary gland (SG) cells. We demonstrated the expression of stem cell-related genes in the epithelial components of human DF tissues, and these epithelial progenitor cells could be isolated and ex vivo expanded in a reproducible manner. The human DF-derived epithelial cells possessed…

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to evaluate the significance of association between distally displaced premolars (DDP) and palatally displaced canines (PDC) in the pattern of associated phenotypes of dental developmental disturbance.
METHODS: A sample of 2811 subjects (mean age, 9 years 7 months +/- 1 year 3 months) was divided randomly into 2 groups. The first group of 500 subjects was the control group. The reference prevalence rates for the examined parameters were calculated for this group: DDP (measured with the distal angle theta and the premolar-molar angle gamma); PDC; and oth

Odontodysplasia is an uncommon clinicopathological condition with a variety of expressions. Although it is generally recognized as a localized disorder of dental tissue, its aetiology has not yet been well explained. In the present case, odontodysplasia with oligodontia in the permanent dentition is reported. The patient was in good health with normal stature and no other physical abnormalities. His parents and siblings were dentally and medically normal. The primary teeth appeared to be normal except for the primary second molars, where the enamel was malformed. However, the permanent incisor

BACKGROUND: Dental caries, a major public health concern, is impacting millions of people worldwide. Its etiology being complex, nevertheless, a possibility of true genetic dental decay has puzzled dental researchers for years, as anatomical structures, namely, lips, thumb, and tooth enamel, are derivatives of an embryonic germ layer, the ectoderm.
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: The study aims to know the association between lip print and tooth decay and to determine the type of lip print that is most susceptible to tooth decay. To determine this relationship, the lip print samples (lip prints) were ex

BACKGROUND/AIM: Alveolar bone process fractures in preschool children are not well documented in the literature. Alveolar process fractures are located very close to primary teeth and permanent tooth germs. This study investigates the risk of healing complications following alveolar process fractures in the primary dentition and potential sequelae in the permanent dentition.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted involving 21 patients with 49 primary teeth involved in an alveolar fracture. The follow-up protocol included clinical and radiographic examinations at spe…

BACKGROUND: Although numerous reports have demonstrated that the junctional epithelium (JE) is derived from the reduced enamel epithelium (REE), the fate of the REE-derived JE remains controversial. The present study elucidated the fate of the REE-derived JE and the cell dynamics of stem/progenitor cells in the JE following tooth eruption.
METHODS: Mandibular first molar germs (embryonic days 15 to postnatal 1-day-old) were transplanted into the socket of 2-week-old mice after extraction of the upper first molars of B6 wild-type (WT) and green fluorescent protein (GFP) transgenic mice. After
