[Decoronation: indications and treatment timing].

Dental trauma in children is a frequent event and may involve functional, esthetic and orthodontic complications. Replacement resorption and ankylosis are frequently diagnosed following avulsion and replantation, severe intrusive luxation, and less frequently as a consequence of lateral luxations and root fractures. The optimal treatment for an ankylotic permanent incisor is yet to be found. The treatment of ankylosis and replacement resorption of a permanent incisor following dental trauma is further complicated when it involves a growing child. It is often associated with increasing infrapos

Association between use of asthma drugs and prevalence of demarcated opacities in permanent first molars in 6-to-8-year-old Danish children.

OBJECTIVES: Demarcated opacities in permanent first molars are common developmental tooth defects, characterized by areas with insufficient mineralization of the enamel. The defects present clinically as a continuum from creamy-white demarcated opacities, yellowish-brown demarcated opacities to macroscopic loss of tooth substance. The etiology is sparsely elucidated, but asthma drugs have been suspected to increase the prevalence. The aim of this study was to examine the prevalence of demarcated opacities in permanent first molars among 6-to-8-year-old children with prescriptions and without p

Preeruptive intracoronal radiolucencies: review and report of case.

Intracoronal radiolucencies in unerupted teeth are an uncommon radiographic finding; but their early detection and classification allow the most appropriate management protocol to be developed. Early separation of lesions into those that are developmental and remain static and those that are reactive and aggressive is necessary for a controlled outcome. The current paper reviews possible formative mechanisms and describes a case of severe intracoronal resorption resulting in loss of the tooth.

The effect of horizontal and vertical furcation involvement on molar survival: A retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Periodontal involvement of the furcation area (furcation involvement, FI) has been reported to confer molars a higher risk of tooth loss. AIMS: The aim of this retrospective analysis was to assess the effect of FI on disease progression and tooth loss in molars of patients with chronic periodontitis undergoing supportive periodontal therapy (SPT) in a UK private practice setting. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Six-hundred and thirty-three molars were analysed in 100 chronic periodontitis patients treated with active periodontal therapy (APT) and followed up in SPT for at least 5 years. M…

[Structure of jaw bone].

The jaw bone is put in a special environmental condition because it receives not only external force through a masticatory muscle, but occlusal force directly from the teeth. Therefore, the morphology and internal structure of the jaw bone is strongly reflected by the erupted condition of the teeth. In the edentulous jaw bone, the number and thickness of the trabecular bones is reduced as well as decrease of its size. This tendency is quite resemble to the morphological change of osteoporosis. Based on the facts mentioned above, it is suggested that the loss of the teeth induces the fragility

The benefits of estrogen replacement therapy on oral health. The Leisure World cohort.

BACKGROUND: Several studies have demonstrated a relationship between tooth loss and alveolar residual ridge resorption and systemic osteoporosis. The recognized benefit of estrogen replacement therapy (ERT) in postmenopausal osteoporosis prompted review of the Leisure World Cohort Study regarding the effects of ERT on tooth loss and the need for dentures in older women. METHODS: The Leisure World Cohort, established in 1981, comprises 13,979 residents (8877 women) of a retirement community. Of the 5935 cohort women alive in 1992, 3921 returned a dental survey with sufficient information to an…

Periodontitis in systemic rheumatic diseases.

Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease that is characterized by loss of the periodontal ligament and alveolar bone, and is a major cause of tooth loss. Results from clinical and epidemiologic studies have suggested that periodontitis and tooth loss are more prevalent in individuals with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). However, the strength and temporality of the association are uncertain. Several biologically plausible causal and noncausal mechanisms might account for this association between periodontitis and RA. There is evidence to suggest that periodontitis could indeed be a causal fac…

Genotypes and Phenotypes of Patients With TSPEAR-Related Disorder: Evidence of a Predominant Dental Phenotype.

TSPEAR (chr. 21q22.3) encodes a protein involved in tooth development and is predominantly expressed in the enamel knot. Biallelic loss of function variants in TSPEAR cause ectodermal dysplasia, tooth agenesis and sensorineural hearing loss. However, the role of TSPEAR in auditory processes is unclear. This study aimed at better delineating the allelic and clinical spectrum of TSPEAR-associated disorders. We identified homozygous and compound heterozygous causative variants in TSPEAR [NM_144991.3] in 11 patients from seven families. Abnormalities in tooth number and shape (conical teeth and to

Premature loss of primary teeth associated with congenital syphilis: a case report.

Congenital syphilis is an infectious disease transmitted by an infected mother to her fetus. Several reports in the literature have focused on oral manifestations of congenital syphilis, mainly about Hutchinson's teeth and dysplastic molars, which are more common. However, this paper describes an unusual feature of congenital syphilis in a four-year-old child. A case of premature loss of primary teeth associated with congenital syphilis is reported.

Eruptive tooth movement--the current state of knowledge.

How the dentition erupts, and what controls it, is fundamental to almost all aspects of clinical dentistry, yet the mechanisms behind this have not yet been fully elucidated. When the process continues into space that has been created through toothwear or tooth loss, problems in placing restorations can be encountered. This review examines the possible mechanisms of tooth eruption. Differences between processes in animals and humans are highlighted. The limitations of conclusions drawn from animal studies are then discussed with reference to human dental conditions. The differing forms of over…

[Application for treatment of ectopic eruption].

Sometimes a maxillary permanent first molar, erupts mesially and causes both resorption on primary second molar and uncompletion its eruption. Consequently, this will end up early loss of primary second molar and loss of space in the arch length. It has been suggested several methods for ectopic eruption treatment. In this article, we would like to advocate an appliance which is simple, effective and easy to fabricate for early treatment of ectopic eruption.

Bone loss and teeth.

Loss of teeth results in irreversible alveolar bone resorption, and untreated dental disease causes alveolar bone lysis that ultimately leads to loss of teeth. In addition to anchoring the teeth in the alveolar ridge, the maxillary and mandibular bone allows dental restoration procedures, such as construction of root-supported implants, fixed dentures, or removable dentures. However, the functional and cosmetic results depend on the quantity and quality of the maxillary or mandibular bone, which can be affected by many normal and abnormal processes. The alveoli are particularly fragile and lab

[Preparation of an implant site using orthodontics. Presentation of a clinical case].

Orthodontic movement of soft and hard tissues can facilitate the placement of a dental implant. A missing lower incisor is one of many situations where orthodontic management of the edentulous space prior to surgery can improve implant insertion. Multidisciplinary treatment must be carefully planned before tooth movement is begun in order to ensure the best possible aesthetic and functional outcomes.

Assessment of the consequences in premature loss of the temporary lower molars.

The consequences of premature loss of temporary teeth are complex, both of functional and morphological order and the clinical presentation depends on multiple factors: the temporary tooth loss rate as compared with permanent tooth eruption sequence and the number and topography of teeth extracted, so the clinical form of edentulous, which can be frontal or lateral, symmetric or asymmetric, isolated or continuous.

Allogenic tooth transplantation using 3D printing: A case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: The history of allogenic tooth transplantation can be traced back to the 16th century. Although there have been many successful cases, much needs to be better understood and researched prior to the technique being translated to everyday clinical practice. CASE SUMMARY: In the present report, we describe a case of allogenic tooth transplantation between a mother and her daughter. The first left maxillary molar of the mother was diagnosed with residual root resorption and needed to be extracted. The 3rd molar of the daughter was used as a donor tooth. Prior to transplantation, a 3D
