Experimental transient bacteraemias in human subjects with varying degrees of plaque accumulation and gingival inflammation.

Ninety-six subjects were assigned to one of four groups according to severity of gingival inflammation and bacterial plaque accumulation on the teeth. Following a standardized toothbrushing procedure, blood specimens from a vein in the antecubital fossa were cultured under aerobic and stringent anaerobic conditions. The percentage of positive cultures increased significantly with increasing severity of gingival inflammation, as did the number of species of organisms isolated. Thirty different microbial species indigenous to the oral cavity, including many strict anaerobes, were recovered. The …

Traditional Oral Hygiene Practices and Their Effectiveness: A Systematic Review of the Evidence.

PURPOSE: Given the increasing interest in natural and sustainable oral hygiene options, this systematic review evaluates the efficacy of traditional oral hygiene practices, specifically miswak and oil pulling, in maintaining oral health compared with conventional practices, addressing the question: how do these practices affect plaque and gingival outcomes relative to toothbrushing and standard rinses? We hypothesized non-inferiority for short-term plaque/gingivitis control, with limited evidence for longer-term outcomes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A systematic review was conducted following PRIS…

Oral hygiene practices and dental caries experience in Nigeria: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Oral hygiene is linked with dental caries experience. This systematic review and meta-analysis assessed the associations between oral hygiene status, the frequency of tooth brushing, and the prevalence of dental caries in Nigeria. It also examined how the geographical zones and dentition type moderate these associations, and identified the tools commonly used for oral hygiene maintenance. METHODS: The systematic review and meta-analysis was registered with PROSPERO (CRD42022367763). A search was conducted in PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, African Journals Online, African Index Me

The theory of reasoned action in describing tongue cleaning adherence among college going students of Indie: A model guided study.

BACKGROUND: Just mere brushing of teeth is not enough for maintaining good oral health. Regular cleaning of tongue is equally important for maintaining good oral hygiene and to escape social embarrassment and personal discomfort, which could arise as a result of halitosis. OBJECTIVE: To test the variables of Theory of Reasoned Action to explain the behavior of tongue cleaning among college going students of Udaipur city, Rajasthan, India. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A descriptive cross-sectional survey was conducted amongst 756 college going students of Udaipur city, India using an online self-adm

[Relationship between first molar caries and eating and tooth brushing habits in elementary school children].

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study was to elucidate the relationship between eating and tooth brushing habits in the second grade of elementary school with first molar caries in the third to sixth grades. METHODS: Subjects were 130 students at one elementary school in the Tokai region who were in the second grade in 2002, for which eating and tooth-brushing habits were ascertained by a self-administered questionnaire survey. A follow-up survey was conducted based on the 2002 to 2006 school dental examination record and analyses were performed on data from 104 students without first molar

[Frequency and pathogenesis of local periodontal recessions].

Localized periodontal recession (LPR) are not rarely in adults: 39.4% in the age of 20-24 years, 44.3% in the age of 35-44 years. It seems to occur a relative increasing number mainly in the age group of 20-24 years: 44.4%. Patients decreased with LPR show in comparison to healthy people a smaller diameter of the canin's apical basis both in upper and lower jaw, a smaller circumference of the alveolar crest as well as an upper canin-crown which is turned out from the teeth arcus in a more labial direction. The chronic trauma of teeth brushing is very important in the pathogenesis of the LPR. P

Influence of the amount of dentifrice used for brushing on enamel and dentin abrasion.

PURPOSE: To investigate whether the amount of dentifrice (dose) used per brushing affects the abrasion of the hard tooth tissues. METHODS: Enamel and dentin specimens were subjected to simulated brushing with two commercial dentifrices (Prodent, Smyle dentifrice in tablet form) and positive as well as negative controls at varying amounts of dentifrices (standard dose, half, and double dose). Brushing without dentifrice (with water) functioned as a negative control. Tooth wear was quantified using profilometry, and statistical analysis was performed using one-way ANOVA and Tukey's post hoc tes

Factors affecting the number of bacteria in saliva and oral care methods for the recovery of bacteria in contaminated saliva after brushing: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Oral care is important in preventing aspiration pneumonia in older adults. However, it is not clear what kind of oral care can reduce the number of bacteria in saliva. The purposes of this study are to clarify whether there is a relationship between plaque amounts and salivary bacterial counts, and how bacteria dispersed into the oral cavity by brushing can be reduced. METHODS: First, saliva samples were collected from 10 healthy adult volunteers after 30 h of unbrushing and after thorough brushing, and the total bacterial count was determined by real-time PCR. Next, 40 older adul

Prospective case series on possible effects of local factors on the development of halitosis in new complete denture wearers.

OBJECTIVES: To assess the development of halitosis in participants wearing new removable complete dentures (RCD). METHOD AND MATERIALS: Seventy-five completely edentulous patients receiving RCD were recruited. Halitosis was assessed by means of FitScan Breath Checker on the day of denture insertion (T0), as well as after 1 month (T1), and after 2 months (T2). Risk factors were studied using a validated questionnaire about oral and denture hygiene, and tongue scoring followed for each participant. A modified plaque scoring technique assessed the percentage of newly formed biofilms accumulated

[Clinical and laboratory evaluation of the Elgydium Protection caries toothpaste effectiveness in patients with high intensity of dental caries].

The aim of the work was to evaluate the effectiveness of rehabilitation after the complete elimination of carious cavities in patients with dentin caries according to clinical and laboratory indicators when using the ELGYDIUM Protection caries toothpaste for cleaning teeth for 6 months. 29 patients with high intensity of dental caries were examined and received treatment. Depending on the organization of daily hygienic measures after treatment the patients were divided into two groups. The main group included 14 patients who used Elgydium Protection caries paste ('Pierre Fabre Medicament', Fra

Using a Social Network Approach to Characterize Oral Health Behavior Social Support Among Mexican-Origin Young Adults.

Using a social network approach, we characterize who Mexican-origin young adults perceive as social support sources for oral health behaviors and provide additional validity evidence for Oral Health Behavior Social Support Scales (OHBSS). From April to September 2022, we gathered social network data from 62 Mexican-origin adults (21-40 years old) through Zoom interviews about their perceived received social support for three oral health behaviors (toothbrushing, flossing, and obtaining dental care) from three potential sources of support (family, health providers, and others/friends). Overall,…
