Transverse venous sinus stenting for idiopathic intracranial hypertension: Safety and feasibility.

Purpose Transverse sinus stenosis is commonly seen in patients with idiopathic intracranial hypertension. It is not clear whether it is the cause or the result of idiopathic intracranial hypertension. Stenting for idiopathic intracranial hypertension has been carried out in several prior series. Our goal was to evaluate the clinical and imaging follow-up results of patients with idiopathic intracranial hypertension that underwent stenting for this condition at our center. Materials and Methods We reviewed the clinical, venographic and follow-up imaging data in patients who underwent elective t

Does bilateral transverse cerebral venous sinus stenosis exist in patients without increased intracranial pressure?

OBJECTIVE: Transverse cerebral venous sinus stenosis (TSS) is common among patients with idiopathic intracranial hypertension. TSS likely also exists among individuals with normal intracranial pressure (ICP) but the prevalence is unclear. The goal of this study was to identify patients with incidental TSS and normal ICP and describe their characteristics. METHODS: Among 240 adult patients who underwent brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with magnetic resonance venography (MRV) with contrast at our institution between September 2009 and September 2011, 44 had isolated TSS without further s

Bacterial meningitis complicated by cerebral venous thrombosis.

INTRODUCTION: Community-acquired bacterial meningitis may be complicated by cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT), but this has not systematically been studied. METHODS: We evaluated clinical characteristics and outcome of CVT in adults with community-acquired bacterial meningitis in a prospective nationwide cohort study of bacterial meningitis (2006-2018) in the Netherlands. RESULTS: CVT occurred in 26 of 2220 episodes with bacterial meningitis (1%). The diagnosis of CVT was made on the day of presentation in 15 patients (58%) and during hospital stay in 11 patients after a median of 6 days (IQR

Multiple cerebral sinus thromboses complicating meningococcal meningitis: a pediatric case report.

BACKGROUND: Cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVT) is a rare and potentially life-threatening condition in the pediatric population. The clinical presentation is frequently nonspecific; thus diagnosis is often delayed or missed. CASE PRESENTATION: A previously healthy 8 month-old boy was diagnosed with meningococcal meningitis. At hospital admission, an urgent non contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) of the head and neck was performed with normal results. Ceftriaxone was promptly started and the clinical condition of the patient improved. However, on the 7th day of hospitalization, the

Dimensions, septation, and pattern of pneumatization of the sphenoidal sinus.

The endoscopic endonasal transsphenoidal approach (EEA) to treat sellar, parasellar, and suprasellar tumours continues to gain increased significance. Due to the close proximity of the sphenoid sinus to the carotid artery and the optic canal, it is very important for surgeons to know the anatomical features and variations of the sphenoid sinus as relevant to EEA. A prospective study of the sphenoid sinus morphology was carried out on the cranial tomographic (CT) scan images of 60 Nigerian adult patients. The CTs were reviewed regarding the different anatomical variations of the sphenoid sinus:

Progressive Cerebral Venous Thrombosis with Cranial Nerve Palsies in an Adolescent African Girl & Associated Diagnostic Pitfalls: A Rare Case Report.

Cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT) is a cerebrovascular disorder caused by complete or partial occlusion of the cerebral venous and sinus system. The etiology has been attributed to hypercoagulability and pro-thrombotic states, leading to raised intracranial pressures that often manifest as headaches and focal neurological deficits. However, the multifactorial nature of CVT can create a diagnostic conundrum for clinicians. We describe a unique case of a 16-year-old female who presented with convulsions, postictal confusion, and drowsiness followed by residual weakness of her extremities. She ini

The Intersection Between the Oculomotor Nerve and the Internal Carotid Artery to Distinguish Extracavernous and Intracavernous Paraclinoid Aneurysms Using Anatomic Dissections-A New 3T Magnetic Resonance Imaging Protocol Confirmed by Three-Dimensionally Printed Biomodels.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the relationship between the oculomotor nerve (CNIII) and the internal carotid artery (ICA) as a new anatomic-radiologic landmark for distinguishing the exact location of a paraclinoid intracranial aneurysm (IA). METHODS: Microanatomic dissections were performed in 20 cavernous sinuses to evaluate the ICA paraclinoid region. Based on anatomic observations, a new magnetic resonance (MRI) protocol to classify paraclinoid aneurysms was proposed. MRI of 42 IAs from 34 patients was independently analyzed and classified as intracavernous, extracavernous, or transitional by 2

[Origin of the common pulmonary vein, septation of the primary sinus venosus atrial situs and theory of the "sinus man"].

Situated at the entry to the heart, the sinus venosus regulates at an early stage the distribution of the veins. Originally symmetrical, it receives on either side an omphalomesenteric vein, a common cardinal vein (duct of Cuvieri, ductus cuvieri) and a common pulmonary vein. This symmetrical pattern disappears with the obliteration of the rough right pulmonary vein and the invagination of the left ductus cuvieri into the sinusal cavity. Thus, the pulmonary venous blood is kept on the left side and the systemic venous blood is transferred to the right side. This is the usual situs solitus arra

Diagnosis of Transverse Sinus Hypoplasia in Magnetic Resonance Venography: New Insights Based on Magnetic Resonance Imaging in Combined Dataset of Venous Outflow Impairment Case-Control Studies: Post Hoc Case-Control Study.

In previous studies of transverse sinus (TS) hypoplasia, discrepancies between TS diameter measured by magnetic resonance venography (MRV) and contrast T1-weighted magnetic resonance (contrast T1) were observed. To investigate these discrepancies, and considering that TS hypoplasia is associated with neurological disorders, we performed a post hoc analysis of prospectively collected data from 3 case-control studies on transient global amnesia (TGA), transient monocular blindness (TMB), and panic disorders while retaining the original inclusion and exclusion criteria. Aggressive evolution of an occipital bone ABC-like lesion with dural invasion and intradural extension: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Aneurysmal bone cysts (ABCs) of the skull are rare, particularly those arising in the occipital bone. Intracranial extension or … oorly defined interfaces with the posterior superior sagittal sinus, torcular region, and bilateral transverse sinuses. Preoperative embolization using 1000-µm polyvinyl alcohol particles reduced tumor vascularity. Gross-total resection was achieved, and histopathology was initially interpreted as consistent with ABC. Cranioplasty was performed 8 months later. Ninet …

Transvenous to arterial Onyx embolization.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Transarterial infusion of Onyx is now widely used in the treatment of arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) and dural arteriovenous fistulas (DAVFs). Transvenous Onyx embolization is rarely performed, and usually in cases of carotid cavernous fistulas. We describe a novel technique of transvenous Onyx embolization in the treatment of three high risk DAVFs and one vein of Galen (VOG) AVM. METHODS: Cases were evaluated with specific attention to technical caveats, clinical indications, and complications. Patients were treated during 2011-2012 by two operators (FCA and CGM). S
