The exposure of wildlife and humans to toxic residues of Roundup(®) through agricultural practices or the food chain has been reported since the herbicide was found contaminating rivers. Glyphosate, N-(phosphonomethyl)glycine acid, is a nonselective post-emergent herbicide and is formulated as an isopropylamine salt with the surfactant taloamine polyethoxylate (POEA) representing the commercial formulation of Roundup(®). There is little knowledge about the effects of the herbicide on helminth parasites, particularly those whose life cycle is related to water bodies. Here we investigated the ef

Hepatic trematodes, such as Fasciola hepatica and Fascioloides magna, have variable distribution throughout the United States. F. magna is endemic in the upper midwestern United States, and F. magna infections are diagnosed frequently in weaned calves and adult beef cattle at the North Dakota State University Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (NDSU-VDL). Rarely, liver fluke infestation has also been observed in much younger calves, including aborted fetuses. We describe here, in 2 fetal and 7 neonatal beef calves submitted to the NDSU-VDL between 2011 and 2020, parasitic migration tracts in liv

Fasciolosis among domestic ruminants has resulted in a decrease in the production of milk products and has occasionally led to the deaths of young ruminants due to of acute infections. This study aimed to discriminate between the eggs of Fasciola gigantica and other trematode eggs in samples collected from ruminant feces specimens using PCR-based methods with the new candidate gene Cytochrome B (CYTB). A species-specific primer was developed with a high degree of sensitivity (3.285 pg). The primer was able to amplify the F. gigantica genomic DNA and there were no positive results with the othe

OBJECTIVE: Although intestinal parasites are commonly detected in either wild or farmed crocodiles in other parts of the world, yet few reports have ever been on the captive bred Chinese alligators (Alligator sinensis) since they are only distributed in the southern areas of the Yangtze River. The current work was undertaken to investigate the intestinal parasites and their diversity in the Chinese crocodilian species.
METHODS: In May and October of 2013, we randomly collected a total of 328 fecal samples of the captive Chinese alligators in a breeding centre in south Anhui province.

Dactylogyrus ctenopharyngodonid and Ichthyophthirius multifiliis are 2 important ectoparasites of fish. Both parasites can induce an immune response in fish that leads to a decrease in parasitic infection intensity and the development of resistance against parasitic reinfection. The present study evaluated whether grass carp Ctenopharyngodon idella that survived a D. ctenopharyngodonid infection could develop immunity against infection by D. ctenopharyngodonid and I. multifiliis. The results demonstrated that when grass carp were infected with D. ctenopharyngodonid, the number of red blood cel

A miniature horse which died following humane seizure from an Ontario farm was emaciated with serous atrophy of fat. Autopsy revealed hepatic atrophy and moderate periportal fibrosis. Eggs and trematodes seen in the liver were identified as Dicrocoelium dendriticum. This appears to be the first reported case of infection of equids in North America with Dicrocoelium dendriticum.

Liver flukes may cause significant pathological changes in domestic and wild ruminants. One such parasite, Parafasciolopsis fasciolaemorpha, reported in European moose (Alces alces), still requires detailed investigation to better understand its pathogenesis and impact on host health. This study aimed to evaluate the gross, histopathological, and biochemical alterations associated with natural P. fasciolaemorpha infection in wild moose inhabiting forests throughout Latvia. Livers from 63 animals were examined, of which 15 (24%) were infected. Infected livers exhibited bile duct thickening and

Neodiplostomum seoulense (Digenea: Neodiplostomidae), an intestinal trematode infecting humans and rodents, is known to be highly pathogenic and lethal to experimentally infected mice. Only a small proportion of mice can survive from its infection. This study aimed to assess the reproductive capacity of surviving BALB/c mice. The fertility of male and female mice, birth time (period from mating to birth of litters), number of litters, size and weight of testes or ovary-oviduct-uterus, apoptosis of testicular cells, and serum levels of sex hormones were determined. Our results revealed that sur

The prevalence of helminthic infections was surveyed on a total of 6,178 residents (males 2,549 and females 3,629) in 102 villages of 9 provinces in Lao PDR between 2007 and 2011 under the project of Korea-Laos Collaborative Project for Control of Foodborne Trematode Infections in Lao PDR. Fecal specimens were collected and examined by the Kato-Katz thick smear and Stoll's egg counting techniques. The overall liver/intestinal helminth egg positive rate was 71.9% with a single or mixed infections with Opisthorchis viverrini and minute intestinal flukes (Ov/MIF), Ascaris lumbricoides, hookworms,…

Human infection with the trematode Fasciola occurs with a worldwide prevalence of up to 17 million. Sheep and cattle are the normal host. Infection typically results in hepatobiliary disease, but extrahepatic manifestations are occasionally reported. Here, we present the case of a previously healthy 31-year-old Kurdish woman, admitted to hospital with a subarachnoid hemorrhage, eosinophilic meningitis, and lung and liver disease. A diagnosis of Fasciola infection was made based on strongly positive serology in blood and cerebrospinal fluid. The patient improved following treatment with triclab

Co-infections by multiple parasite genotypes are common and have important implications for host-parasite ecology and evolution through within-host interactions. Typically, these infections take place sequentially, and therefore, the outcome of co-infection may be shaped by host immune responses triggered by previous infections. For example, in vertebrates, specific immune responses play a central role in protection against disease over the course of life, but co-infection research has mostly focused on previously uninfected individuals. Here, we investigated whether sequential exposure and ac

Although parasitism is one of the most common species interactions in nature, the role of parasites in their hosts' thermal tolerance is often neglected. This study examined the ability of the trematode Podocotyle atomon to modulate the feeding and stress response of Gammarus locusta towards temperature. To accomplish this, infected and uninfected females and males of Gammarus locusta were exposed to temperatures (2, 6, 10, 14, 18, 22, 26, 30 °C) for six days. Shredding (change in food biomass) and defecation rates (as complementary measure to shredding rate) were measured as proxies for feedi

Trematodes are a class of parasitic flatworms with complex life cycles involving multiple hosts. They can influence the physiology and behavior of their intermediate hosts to improve the efficiency of transmission to definitive hosts, including by increasing host mortality. However, the mechanisms of their effect on the crustacean nervous system leading to neuronal dysregulation and its consequences have not been sufficiently elucidated. This study investigated the effects of infection by metacercariae of the trematode Cercaria fluviocinguli on the serotonin (5-HT) immunoreactivity, inflammati

Debates over the relationship between biodiversity and disease dynamics underscore the need for a more mechanistic understanding of how changes in host community composition influence parasite transmission. Focusing on interactions between larval amphibians and trematode parasites, we experimentally contrasted the effects of host richness and species composition to identify the individual and joint contributions of both parameters on the infection levels of three trematode species. By combining experimental approaches with field surveys from 147 ponds, we further evaluated how richness effects
