Trichuris spp. have a cosmopolitan distribution; the species are typically identified by features related to the reproductive system. Trichuris laevitestis was described on the basis of specimens collected from rodents captured in Punta Lara, Buenos Aires Province, Argentina. Here, T. laevitestis is redescribed considering new and relevant morphological features of diagnostic importance such as arrangement of spines on the spicular sheath, spicule length, length and shape of proximal cloacal tube, paracloacal papillae, features of the vulva, and ratios between different features. Mebendazole, a new broad-spectrum oral anthelmintic for nematodes, was given to patients harboring whipworm in a hospital for the mentally retarded. A three-day regimen (100 mg twice a day) dewormed 75% of the subjects, a five-day regimen cured 95%. The remaining patients excreted strikingly lesser amounts of the parasites' eggs after therapy. No untoward effects were noted clinically. It is the drug of choice in mixed worm infestations.

A single dose of dichlorvos (2,2-dichlorovinyl dimethyl phosphate) was administered orally at a dosage of 30 mg/kg to 19 dogs naturally infected with Trichuris vulpis and to 13 dogs experimentally infected with T vulpis. Based on the presence or absence of whipworm eggs in the feces, 10 to 14 days after treatment, dogs were either killed and the number of remaining worms counted, or the dogs were given a 2nd treatment.
