Comparative role of neem seed extract, moringa leaf extract and imidacloprid in the management of wheat aphids in relation to yield losses in Pakistan.

Wheat being staple food of Pakistan is constantly attacked by major wheat aphid species, Schizaphis graminum (R.), Rhopalosiphum padi (L.) and Sitobion avenae (F.). Due to concern on synthetic chemical use in wheat, it is imperative to search for alternative environment- and human- friendly control measures such as botanical pesticides. In the present study, we evaluated the comparative role of neem seed extract (NSE), moringa leaf extract (MLE) and imidacloprid (I) in the management of the aphid as well as the yield losses parameters in late planted wheat fields. Imidacloprid reduced signific

Growth suppression of Fusarium culmorum, Fusarium poae and Fusarium graminearum by 5-n-alk(en)ylresorcinols from wheat and rye bran.

Alk(en)ylresorcinols (AR), a class of phenolic lipids, are regarded as antifungal compounds showing high potential for the use in plant protection, especially against Fusarium head blight (FHB). In view of the very limited knowledge of the activity of single AR against Fusarium species, the antifungal effect of crude extracts, fractions and isolated homologues from wheat and rye bran was determined. It was shown that the saturated AR are the active compounds in the extracts, whereas the presence of unsaturated molecules leads to an antagonistic effect. The activity of single saturated AR is de

Effects of enzyme activities during steeping and sprouting on the solubility and composition of proteins, their bioactivity and relationship with the bread making quality of wheat flour.

The aim was to determine the effect of steeping and sprouting on wheat grain proteins and the functional consequences in this regard. The solubility of proteins and the polypeptide composition of albumins, globulins, gliadins and glutenins were determined, as well as the content of non-protein nitrogen and free sulfhydryl groups (-SH), and the activity of peroxidase (POD) and lipoxygenase (LOX). In addition, the pasting viscosity of flour and protein bioactivity such as antioxidant capacity and immunoreactivity were evaluated. The increase of non-protein nitrogen and free -SH groups by about 6

Effects of the order of addition of reagents and alkali on modification of wheat starches.

The objective of this research was to determine if adding reactive reagents to wheat starch granules before addition of alkali (the TRF method) would produce products that are different than those obtained with the conventional procedure (adding alkali before addition of reagent). Laboratory-isolated (LI) and commercial (C) normal (NWS) and waxy (WWS) wheat starches were each reacted with 6 reagents (acetic-adipic mixed anhydride (AAMA), phosphoryl chloride (POCl3), sodium trimetaphosphate (STMP), acetic anhydride (AA), succinic anhydride (SA), octenylsuccinic anhydride (OSA)). Data obtained w

Wheat.

Wheat is the dominant crop in temperate countries being used for human food and livestock feed. Its success depends partly on its adaptability and high yield potential but also on the gluten protein fraction which confers the viscoelastic properties that allow dough to be processed into bread, pasta, noodles, and other food products. Wheat also contributes essential amino acids, minerals, and vitamins, and beneficial phytochemicals and dietary fibre components to the human diet, and these are particularly enriched in whole-grain products. However, wheat products are also known or suggested to

[Damage of Rhopalosiphum padi (L.) (Hemiptera: Aphididae) on wheat plants related to duration time and density of infestation].

Aphids are considered relevant pests on wheat either by direct damage through sap sucking or by indirect damage vectoring BYDV (Barley yellow dwarf virus). Rhopalosiphum padi L. has been observed infesting wheat fields with an increasing frequency. The knowledge and the available technology, besides being more related to other aphids species already recognized as pests, they are insufficient to control the specific problem of R. padi. Thus, this work evaluated the effects of feeding duration and infestation densities of R. padi on seedlings of wheat cv. Embrapa 16. Grain yield, yield component

Evidence for electrotropism in some plant species.

The ever-present global Atmospheric Electrical Field (AEF) is used by many plant species. There are many natural habitats with electrotropic plants and habitats with no AEF. The plants growing there are not electrotropic, like the plants growing under the canopies of the trees or the Arecibo radio telescope. Examples are given of different plants which belong to one or the other class, and the criteria how to distinguish them. In addition to natural habitat observations, laboratory experiments were run in search of the sensitivity of electrotropic effect to different electric field intensities

[Hydrocyanic acid content in cerals and cereal products].

In the above paper for the first time a systematic study of the amount of hydrocyanic acid in grains and cereal products is reported. Among 24 analysed wheat, rye, maize and oats types, the presence of hydrocyanic acid could be identified in 19 cases in their Karyopses. Similar is the result with 28 among 31 analysed cereal products. The content of hydrocyanic acid lies between 0.1 and 45 microgram/100 gr dried mass.

Polygalacturonase activity of Penicillum sp 7/4B/EI 1 mutant grown on some by-products of food industry.

Pectolytic activity of the Penicillum sp 7/4B/E11 mutant, which synthesized effectively PG and was not capable of producing PE, was studied on some by-products of food industries (apple pulp, beet pulp, and mixtures of apple pulp or beet pulp with wheat bran) supplemented in some experiments with mineral salts of the Czapek's medium. The strain showed good growth but a low PG activity when grown on by-products without mineral salts and an increase in PG activity after cultivation on these by-products (mainly on beet pulp) enriched with mineral salts. The highest PG activity was obtained after

Endophyte-Mediated Aphid Resistance in Wheat via Chemical and Structural Defenses under Nonsterilized Soil Condition.

Endophyte-based coatings enhance plant resistance and offer a sustainable alternative to chemical insecticides; however, their efficacy under nonsterilized soil conditions remains unclear. Here, we examined how nonsterilized soil conditions influence aphid resistance in wheat conferred by the endophytic fungus Beauveria bassiana strain YC. YC inoculation reduced Rhopalosiphum padi populations in both sterilized and nonsterilized soils, with stronger resistance observed under nonsterilized conditions, as evidenced by reduced aphid performance and altered feeding behavior. These effects were acc

Phenotypic and cultural diversity of zymoseptoria tritici causing septoria leaf blotch in Ethiopian wheat.

Septoria leaf blotch caused by Zymoseptoria tritici (Z. tritici) is indeed a major constraint to global wheat production, reduces wheat yield and quality. This study aimed to evaluate the phenotypic and cultural diversity of Z. tritici isolates. A total of 67 isolates were collected from major wheat-growing hotspot areas in Ethiopia. Molecular confirmation of the isolates was performed using PCR with specific markers (ST2E4, ST1G7, and tcc-0009). Among the collected samples, 45.5% originated from North Shoa, while only 3% were obtained from East Gojam, indicating uneven distribution across reg

Unlocking wheat yield potential through evaluation of high-performing hybrid lines in semiarid conditions of northern Pakistan.

Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) yield in Pakistan has remained stagnant over the past two decades mainly due to the narrow genetic diversity of cultivated varieties. To overcome this limitation and explore new genetic resources for improved productivity, twelve Chinese wheat hybrid lines were evaluated in comparison with two local cultivars at the Agronomy Research Farm, the University of Agriculture Peshawar, Pakistan over two seasons (2021-2022, 2022-2023). Results showed that early emergence occurred in the hybrid lines 20 BH 37 and 20 BH 53 (12.5 days). Wheat lines 20 BH 53 and 20 BH 56 produ…

Responses of arbuscular mycorrhizal wheat to salinity: from symbiotic signaling to stress adaptation.

Salinity is a major constraint to wheat productivity, imposing osmotic stress, ionic imbalance, and oxidative pressure that compromise growth and yield. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi can improve wheat performance under salinity through effects extending beyond nutrient acquisition. This review examines the context-dependent symbiosis between wheat and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi, in which reciprocal signaling and resource exchange influence stress adaptation. Direct studies, particularly in durum and bread wheat, indicate that AM colonization can improve K⁺/Na⁺ balance, nutrient acquisition, w

Physicochemical quality detection of wheat during hot air drying based on hyperspectral imaging combined with machine learning.

Hot air drying is widely used for wheat due to simple operation, but research on the intelligent regulation of the drying system based on product quality is limited. This study explored the application of hyperspectral imaging (HSI) for non-contact detection of wheat quality after hot air drying. Wheat characteristics after hot air drying were first analyzed at different drying treatments. Chemometric methods were combined with HSI for regression modeling of the wheat drying quality. At air speeds of 2.0, 1.5, and 1.0 m/s, the drying times at 40 °C, 60 °C, and 80 °C were 110-130 min, 40-50 min

Bifunctional Enzymes for Deoxynivalenol Degradation in Prokaryotic and Eukaryotic Chassis.

Deoxynivalenol (DON), a prevalent mycotoxin produced by Fusarium spp., represents a persistent threat to global food and feed safety. Two innovative strategies were developed herein for efficient DON detoxification. Coupling the genes encoding the aldo-keto reductase AKR13B2 and the pyrroloquinoline quinone-dependent DON dehydrogenase DepA using a flexible linker enabled rational engineering of the bifunctional fusion enzyme BGA (AKR13B2-[GGGGS]2-DepA). This design facilitated proximity-enhanced sequential conversion of DON to 3-keto-DON and the markedly less toxic 3-epi-DON. BGA exhibited sig
