A Crateriform Facial Nodule in a Man With Pulmonary Tuberculosis.

Cryptococcus neoformans is an environmental pathogenic yeast which causes both life-threatening infection and mild, localized infection. Cutaneous cryptococcosis is an uncommon event that usually results from haematogenous dissemination after a primary infection in the pulmonary or other organs, although primary cutaneous infection is possible. The lesions of cutaneous cryptococcosis are not pathognomonic, varying from nodules to ulcers and plaques, and thus can mimic other skin disorders. This case highlights that clinicians need to observe the skin lesions carefully and improve the relevant

Recent advancements in drug development for pulmonary tuberculosis.

Tuberculosis (TB), caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb), is a global health threat. Despite advances in diagnostics and treatment regimens, it infects millions annually. It remains a significant global health challenge, particularly due to the appearance of resistance towards anti-tuberculosis drugs (ATD), mainly multidrug-resistant (MDR) and extensively drug-resistant (XDR) strains. Mtb poses resistance towards the currently used first- and second-line regimen. Recent advancements in drug development have introduced therapeutic options focussed on improving treatment outcomes for both d

The performance of tongue swabs for detection of pulmonary tuberculosis.

INTRODUCTION: Oral and/or tongue swabs have demonstrated ability to detect Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) in adults with pulmonary tuberculosis (TB). Swabs provide useful alternative specimens for diagnosis of TB using molecular assays however, the diagnostic pickup by culture requires further improvement and development. Several studies identified the presence of differentially culturable tubercle bacilli (DCTB) populations in a variety of clinical specimens. These organisms do not grow in routine laboratory media and require growth factors in the form of culture filtrate (CF) from logarith

Inadequate housing and pulmonary tuberculosis: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) is a global health issue that has long threatened and continues to threaten human health. While previous studies are important in the search for a cure for TB, to eradicate the disease it is also crucial to analyze environmental influences. Therefore, this study determined the potential effect of inadequate housing on TB and the magnitude of the effect. METHODS: This is a systematic review of the effects of inadequate housing on TB. Between Jan 1, 2011 and Oct 25, 2020, we searched four electronic databases using the search terms "housing AND tuberculosis" or "ho

Pattern of Tubercular Uveitis in Active Pulmonary Tuberculosis.

Ocular tuberculosis is an extra-pulmonary form of systemic Tuberculosis (TB). It is rarely found concomitant with active pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB). The aim of this prospective observational study was to evaluate the pattern of tubercular uveitis (TBU) in the patients with active PTB who attended in our Uvea clinic at NIO&H from July 2018 to December 2020. Active PTB patients who had uveitis consistent with TBU and TBU patients who were confirmed as active lung lesion were included in the study. Chest X-ray, TST, IGRA (QuantiFERON-TB Gold Test), RT PCR of aqueous fluid for tubercular bacillu

Pulmonary tuberculosis with superadded infection of echinococcus and aspergillus.

Pulmonary tuberculosis is one of the most common immunosuppressive infections in India, seldom accompanies other parasitic and fungal infections. In our case, we describe the three coexistent infections and their clinical presentation in a 53-year-old woman. A fibro-cavitary lesion in lung with superadded infections of hydatid cyst and aspergillus which is rare has been elaborated in the present case.

Multiple tuberculomas and cavitating pulmonary tuberculosis in an infant.

A five-month-old infant presented with fever and cough for 3 weeks. She was diagnosed with multiple tuberculomas and cavitating pulmonary tuberculosis. She was a household contact of an open case of tuberculosis (TB) and developed severe disease, although she had received the Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccine and had no primary or secondary immunodeficiency. In infants, due to low levels of cell mediated immunity, tuberculosis can be severe and dissemination of tuberculosis to the central nervous system (CNS) can occur very early without following the usual time frame. CNS TB may not have

Screening tests for active pulmonary tuberculosis in children.

BACKGROUND: Globally, children under 15 years represent approximately 12% of new tuberculosis cases, but 16% of the estimated 1.4 million deaths. This higher share of mortality highlights the urgent need to develop strategies to improve case detection in this age group and identify children without tuberculosis disease who should be considered for tuberculosis preventive treatment. One such strategy is systematic screening for tuberculosis in high-risk groups. OBJECTIVES: To estimate the sensitivity and specificity of the presence of one or more tuberculosis symptoms, or symptom combinations;

Overt and Subclinical Adrenal Insufficiency in Pulmonary Tuberculosis.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis of the adrenal glands may cause overt or subclinical adrenal insufficiency. An algorithm-based approach including assessment of paired basal cortisol and plasma adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), short Synacthen, and plasma renin activity assays could be useful to diagnose all forms of adrenal insufficiency. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included consecutive, treatment-naive subjects diagnosed with pulmonary tuberculosis. Tuberculosis severity was classified by radiological criteria. Baseline parameters plus morning (8 am) serum cortisol and paired plasma ACTH

A Case of Oral Histoplasmosis Concomitant with Pulmonary Tuberculosis.

The superficial intraoral lesions of histoplasmosis occurring concomitant to tuberculosis, in a 46-year-old man, are reported. The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection test was negative. The immunosuppression caused by tuberculosis in our patient probably had an important role in the development of intraoral lesions of histoplasmosis. Here, we discussed the role of the dentist in the diagnosis of these infectious diseases, highlighting the importance of anamnesis and the histopathology/immunohistochemistry exams.

[Pulmonary tuberculosis in diagnostic imaging: the great mime.].

Pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) is nowadays one of the most common causes of infectious disease-related morbility and mortality worldwide. The differential diagnosis between TB and some others conditions is an emerging problem, particularly challenging when TB imaging mimicks sarcoidosis, lymphoproliferative disorders and pulmonary neoplasms. In these cases, the correct diagnoses can be made with certainty only with trans-bronchial or CT guided biopsy.

Pulmonary Tuberculosis: Role of Radiology in Diagnosis and Management.

Tuberculosis is a public health problem worldwide, including in the United States-particularly among immunocompromised patients and other high-risk groups. Tuberculosis manifests in active and latent forms. Active disease can occur as primary tuberculosis, developing shortly after infection, or postprimary tuberculosis, developing after a long period of latent infection. Primary tuberculosis occurs most commonly in children and immunocompromised patients, who present with lymphadenopathy, pulmonary consolidation, and pleural effusion. Postprimary tuberculosis may manifest with cavities, consol

[Pulmonary actinomycosis and tuberculosis. A comorbidity pediatric case].

UNLABELLED: Actinomycosis is a chronic suppurative infection, produced by anaerobic Gram-positive bacteria or microaerobic Actinomyces species. It is rare in children and adolescents and it is more common in immunocompromised. Mycobacterium tuberculosis collaborates on the development of the disease. Pulmonary involvement appears as a picture of chronic condensation that does not improve with conventional antibiotic treatment. Classic complications affecting the thoracic wall with drainage in «sulfur granule» and fistulization are described less frequently nowadays. The diagnosis is a real cha
