A longitudinal analysis on associations of adiponectin levels with metabolic syndrome and carotid artery intima-media thickness. The Cardiovascular Risk in Young Finns Study.

OBJECTIVE: Adipose-tissue derived adiponectin has gained a lot of interest as a marker of metabolic syndrome (MetS) and cardiovascular risk. The objective of this study was to assess whether adiponectin levels in young adults predict the incidence of MetS after 6-year follow-up. To gain insight on the interrelations between MetS, adiponectin and cardiovascular risk, we also examined the associations of adiponectin and carotid atherosclerosis according to MetS status. METHODS: This analysis was part of a population-based, longitudinal cohort study conducted among 1693 Cardiovascular Risk in Yo

Effects of external irradiation of the neck region on intima media thickness of the common carotid artery.

BACKGROUND: Several studies have shown that common carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) is increased after radiotherapy (RT) to the head and neck. However, further studies are needed to define the exact mechanism of radiation-induced injury in large vessels, investigate the relationship between radiation dose and large vessel injury and evaluate the rate of progress of atherosclerosis in irradiated vessels. OBJECTIVES: To investigate whether external irradiation to the carotid area has any effect on IMT of the common carotid artery in a group of patients who received RT vs control group match

Conventional cardiovascular risk factors and metabolic syndrome in predicting carotid intima-media thickness progression in young adults: the cardiovascular risk in young Finns study.

BACKGROUND: Conventional risk factors and metabolic syndrome (MetS) are cross-sectionally associated with subclinical atherosclerosis in young adults. We evaluated the relations of conventional risk factors and MetS to the 6-year progression of carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) in a population of young adults. RESULTS AND METHODS: The study included 1809 subjects (aged 32+/-5 years) who had IMT measured in 2001 and 2007. Risk factor measurements included low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, body mass index, C-reactive protein, smoking, and family history of coronary disease in addition to

No correlation and low agreement of imaging and inflammatory atherosclerosis' markers in familial hypercholesterolemia.

Our purpose was to study the determinants of coronary and carotid subclinical atherosclerosis, aortic stiffness and their relation with inflammatory biomarkers in familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) subjects. Furthermore, we evaluated the agreement degree of imaging and inflammatory markers' severity used for coronary heart disease (CHD) prediction. Coronary calcium scores (CCS), carotid intima media thickness (IMT), carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (PWV), C reactive protein (CRP) and white blood cells count (WBC) were determined in 89 FH patients (39+/-14 years, mean LDL-C=279 mg/dl) and in

Measurement of carotid intima-media thickness to assess progression and regression of atherosclerosis.

Imaging modalities have been developed to assess atherosclerosis in vivo in the arterial wall because large clinical end-point studies are time-consuming and costly. Historically, in-hospital angiography and Doppler ultrasonography have been used to assess atherosclerosis development. Investigations of the arterial lumen are, however, increasingly being replaced by modalities that can measure changes in the arterial wall itself-intravascular ultrasonography, MRI and multislice CT. The fact that intravascular ultrasonography is invasive, CT involves substantial radiation exposure and requires c

Long-term treatment with sulfhydryl angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibition reduces carotid intima-media thickening and improves the nitric oxide/oxidative stress pathways in newly diagnosed patients with mild to moderate primary hypertension.

BACKGROUND: Sulfhydryl angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors exert antiatherosclerotic effects in preclinical models and antioxidant effects in patients. However, whether ACE inhibitors have any clinically significant antiatherogenic effects remains still debated. OBJECTIVES: In mildly hypertensive patients, we evaluated the effect of the sulfhydryl ACE inhibitor zofenopril in comparison with the carboxylic ACE inhibitor enalapril on carotid atherosclerosis (intima-media thickness [IMT] and vascular lumen diameter) and systemic oxidative stress (nitrite/nitrate, asymmetrical dimethyl

[Calcifications in temporal arteries -- their morphogenesis in comparison to physiological osteogenesis].

OBJECTIVE: Vascular calcification, traditionally regarded as a dystrophic process, has recently been interpreted as a bone-like biologically regulated phenomenon. Because temporal arteries which also contain calcifications are easily available from biopsies of older individuals with suspected giant cell arteritis, we studied the morphogenesis of this calcification in comparison with the development of fetal bone. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Formaldehyde fixed arteries were processed in paraffin sections and investigated by light-, transmission-, and scanning electron microscopy. The atomic composit

Pulmonary artery intimal sarcoma: Case report of a patient managed with multimodality treatment and a comprehensive literature review.

Pulmonary artery intimal sarcoma (PAIS) is a rare and aggressive malignancy originating from the intimal layer of the pulmonary artery with poor prognosis due to its aggressive nature. The management of PAIS poses both diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. It presents with nonspecific symptoms and is often misdiagnosed as pulmonary embolism. While surgical resection is the primary treatment modality, the role of adjuvant chemotherapy and radiotherapy remains uncertain. However, given the high recurrence rate, adjuvant chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy have been utilized in a limited number of

Pirfenidone alleviates vascular intima injury caused by hyperhomocysteinemia.

OBJECTIVES: Hyperhomocysteinemia (HHcy) can induce vascular inflammatory and oxidative damage and accelerate intimal hyperplasia. This study investigated the protective effect of pirfenidone (PFD) on the recovery process of injured endothelial arteries during HHcy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty rabbits were randomly separated into three groups: A control group (n=10, standard rabbit chow), a model group (n=10, control diet plus 30 g methionine/kg food), and a PFD group (n=10, model diet plus oral administration of 90 mg/day of PFD). After 14 weeks of arterial injury, histopathological changes

Stretch-Induced Intimal Failure in Isolated Cerebral Arteries as a Function of Development.

Recent clinical studies have shown that traumatic brain injury is a significant risk factor for stroke. Motivated to better understand possible mechanisms of this association, we studied subfailure disruption of the intima in overstretched sheep cerebral arteries, as this has been implicated in the increased risk of stroke following blunt cerebrovascular injury. Middle cerebral arteries from four age groups (ranging from fetal to adult) were stretched axially to failure, and intimal disruption was captured with a video camera. All vessels demonstrated intimal disruption prior to catastrophic f

Large vessel vasculopathy in a patient with systemic lupus erythematosus: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Vasculopathy in systemic lupus erythematosus is a rare form of vascular involvement characterized by non-inflammatory vascular injury with the accumulation of immune complexes in the walls of the arteries, resulting in luminal narrowing. While previous reports have demonstrated vasculitis in the large vessels or vasculopathy in the small vessels, vasculopathy in large vessels has not yet been reported. CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a 43-year-old Japanese woman with peripheral large vessel vasculopathy associated with systemic lupus erythematosus. She presented a 7-year

Isolated V-Lesion in an ABO-Incompatible Kidney Transplant Recipient Receiving Rituximab.

We report an ABO-incompatible kidney transplant performed on a 69-year-old female patient, whose donor was her 69-year-old husband. The patient received an immunosuppressive protocol using rituximab without splenectomy. Renal biopsy was done on posttransplant day 8 due to poor early graft function, and an isolated v-lesion was found, which responded to steroid pulse therapy and gusperimus hydrochloride administration. Our results indicate that isolated v-lesions can occur in ABO-incompatible kidney transplant recipients receiving rituximab and that this finding should be treated as acute rejec

Plaque Rupture and Thrombosis: the Value of the Atherosclerotic Rabbit Model in Defining the Mechanism.

Persistent inflammation and mechanical injury associated with cholesterol crystal accretion within atherosclerotic plaques typically precedes plaque disruption (rupture and/or erosion) and thrombosis--often the terminal events of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. To elucidate the mechanisms of these events, the atherosclerotic rabbit model provides a unique and powerful tool that facilitates studies of atherogenesis starting with plaque buildup to eventual disruption. Examination of human coronary arteries obtained from patients who died with myocardial infarction demonstrates evidence o

Sudden death due to spontaneous acute dissection of the left subclavian artery with rupture during postpartum period: a case report.

Subclavian artery dissection is usually associated with coexisting aortic disease. Isolated and spontaneous acute subclavian artery dissection is uncommon and rarely reported. In addition, no case of left subclavian artery dissection during pregnancy and early puerperium has been described. We report the autopsy case of a 24-year-old female who died suddenly 3 days after delivery due to a spontaneous left subclavian artery dissection with rupture.

[Collagen fiber pathology in atherosclerotic plaques of the coronary arteries in ischemic heart disease].

Structure-metabolic changes of collagen fibers (CF) in atherosclerosis plaques of the coronary arteries in the conditions of ischemic heart disease (IHD) have been studied. Segments of the coronary arteries were received from 68 men after a coronary artery bypass grafting. CF was study with using of the Van Gieson's and the Masson's methods. Histologic slices were studied by polarization microscopy. The atherosclerosis plaques with IHD were notable for lipidosis of CF. We've suspected lipidosis of CF is a crucial factor for the development of atherosclerosis plaques instability. Evident lipido

[The implication of Chlamydia pneumoniae in damage to human aortic endotheliocytes in atherosclerosis].

A cytological technique was used to study the impressions of the aortic intima of dead patients. Endothelial cell Chlamydia pneumoniae (CP) was detected in 26 (56.5%) of 46 dead patients; the bacterium was found in the unaffected intact intimal areas in 9 (19.6%) cases. Three morphological forms of CP--inclusions, spots, and aggregates were described. The whole life cycle of CP and the specific features of disintegration of the host cell--the endothelium were observed. CP leads to extensive infection and aponecrotic death of all types of endothelial cells above the fatty streaks and plaques. F
