Non-invasive continuous and pulsed wave Doppler ultrasonography was performed in 102 consecutive patients with clinically ill defined systolic murmurs to differentiate between flow murmurs, mitral regurgitation, aortic stenosis, and ventricular septal defect, as well as to assess the severity of aortic stenosis. Ultrasound findings of 39 spleens and 68 livers in which histology was obtained at laparotomy or autopsy within a month of the examination and four livers in which abnormalities were found clinically by other methods during long-term follow-up were reviewed to evaluate the various sonographic appearances and the accuracy in detecting involvement of the spleen and liver. Only one out of 17 positive spleens had definite ultrasonic focal lesions. Not only small splenic Hodgkin's foci but also larger ones were overlooked. A water-coupled free-immersion ultrasound scanner, the Octoson, was used to study 70 patients with scrotal disease. The main advantage of the immersion technique is the perfect overview of the whole male genital organ. A patient with Caroli's syndrome is reported; diagnosis was made by ERCP and ultrasonography. Caroli's disease occurred in its "pure" form in this patient, i.e. dilatation was present only in the intrahepatic biliary system while the extrahepatic bile ducts were normal. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the clinical value of ultrasonography in the management of disorders of sex development (DSDs).
METHODS: Ultrasonographic appearance and clinical data of 82 cases with DSD were reviewed retrospectively.
