Ovarian metastases from carcinoma of the bilharzial urinary bladder.

A pathologic study of 135 cases of carcinoma of the bilharzial urinary bladder treated with radical anterior pelvic exenteration, including 60 cases examined by subserial sections of both ovaries, did not reveal a single incidence of ovarian metastases from bladder carcinoma. The same observation has been reported by some investigators examining the more aggressive forms of bladder carcinoma seen in Western countries. Based on these findings, we recommend that at least one ovary, the one away from the tumors, should be retained with an intact blood supply to avoid the distressing symptoms of m…

A case of spontaneous urinary bladder rupture secondary to urinary retention due to an urethral stricture.

A spontaneous, non-traumatic, urinary bladder rupture is a rare condition. We describe a case of a 23-year-old male with a spontaneous bladder rupture secondary to urinary retention, due to an urethral stricture. He presented to the emergency department with voiding difficulties, severe abdominal pain and renal failure. Abdominal ultrasound revealed large amounts of ascites. After an unsuccessful attempt to place a Foley catheter a cystoscopy was performed which showed an urethral stricture. On CT-cystogram an intra-peritoneal bladder rupture was diagnosed and the patient underwent laparoscopi…

The macrostructure and microstructure of the urinary bladder and urethral mucosa in dogs with lower urinary tract diseases.

The aim of the study was to assess the macrostructure and the microstructure of the bladder and urethral mucosa in dogs with lower urinary tract disease as well as to evaluate the usefulness of the WHO/ISUP grading of invasive and non-invasive tumours of the bladder and urethral mucosa. The study was carried out on 37 dogs of different breeds and of both sexes, from 9 months to 15 years old. An urethrocystoscopy and a histopathological evaluation of mucosal biopsies were carried out in all the studied dogs. Cystitis was the most common disease noted during urethrocystoscopy. Chronic active inf

Incidentally discovered inverted papilloma of the urinary bladder in patients with lower urinary tract symptoms.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Inverted urothelial papilloma (IP) is an uncommon urothelial neoplasm. We aimed to determine the clinicopathologic c … at of other located IP with BPH were observed. CONCLUSIONS: This is the largest series of cases of urinary bladder IP reported from Korea. Despite the absence of agreement of its etiology, its presenting symptoms were related to LUTS and benign prostatic enlargement. TRUS may be helpful, especially in unresponsive patients with LUTS despite medical treatment.

[Development of bladder capacity, nocturnal urinary volume and urinary behavior in nonenuretic and enuretic children].

Bladder capacity, nocturnal urinary volume and nocturnal urinary behavior were investigated in 1751 nonenuretic and 282 enuretic children in two primary schools and four kindergartens. The results were as follows: 1. A statistically significant linear correlation was observed between the age and the bladder capacity in the morning and daytime, as well as nocturnal urinary output, in nonenuretic children. 2. The bladder capacity of enuretic children was smaller in the ages below 6 but larger in the ages over 7 than that of noneuretic children. It was not likely from this evidence that an immatu

[Extension to the upper urinary tract of excreto-urinary carcinoma of the bladder. Apropos of 6 cases].

Of a total of 261 patients with carcinoma of bladder, 6 (2.3%) presented secondary lesions in upper urinary tract 3 to 13 years after initial diagnosis, including one only after total cysto-prostatectomy. These 6 patients represent 12 renal units, including 5 with iatrogenic reflux, and all had secondary urethral localizations. Urine cytology was particularly reliable since results were positive after treatment of bladder lesion and before detection of upper urinary tract foci. The latter developed whatever the stage or grade of the bladder tumor, from carcinoma in situ, through grade I stage

Urinary bladder injury during cesarean delivery: risk factors and the role of retrograde bladder filling.

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: Urinary bladder injury during cesarean delivery is an uncommon complication with substantial maternal morbidity. The aim of this study was to identify possible risk factors for bladder injury during cesarean delivery and to describe the role of retrograde bladder filling in the assessment of bladder wall integrity. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study at a large tertiary referral center. Women who underwent cesarean delivery between 2003 and 2017 were included. Women diagnosed with urinary bladder injury were compared to women who did not have such injuries. Data…

Pharmacological characterization of urinary bladder smooth muscle contractility following partial bladder outlet obstruction in pigs.

Partial bladder outlet obstruction of the pig is considered as a valuable preclinical model for evaluating the profile of compounds for the treatment of bladder overactivity. In this study, we characterized the pharmacological properties of isolated bladder smooth muscle from pigs following partial outlet obstruction and its sensitivity to potassium channel openers. Bladder strips from obstructed animals showed significantly lower maximal efficacy (E(max)) and sensitivity to stimulation by ATP and carbachol, but not to those evoked by serotonin, compared to age-matched controls. Tissue strips

[MALACOPLAKIA OF THE URINARY BLADDER: A CASE REPORT WITH DIAGNOSTIC DIFFICULTY].

We herein report a rare case of malacoplakia of the urinary bladder that demonstrated significant diagnostic difficulty. The patient was a 65-year-old woman with a history of breast cancer, dermatomyositis, steroid-induced diabetes mellitus, and cutaneous cryptococcosis. She presented with repeated episodes of dysuria and hematuria since the age of 62. Computed tomography (CT) revealed progressive bladder wall thickening, and she was therefore diagnosed with cystitis by her primary care physician and treated with antibiotics. Her symptoms worsened at 63 years of age, and further bladder wall t…

Molecular characterization of clear cell adenocarcinoma of the urinary bladder.

BACKGROUND: Clear cell adenocarcinoma (CCA) of the urinary tract is a rare genitourinary malignancy that primarily arises in the urethra and … IK3CA mutations. CONCLUSIONS: In summary, we identified a distinct oncogenic pathway in CCA of the urinary bladder, most commonly involving activation of the PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway through gain-of-function mutations in PIK3CA (74%) and/or KRAS (26%). These tumours frequently harbour loss-of-function mutations in tumour suppressor genes (TP53, SMAD4, RB1 and APC) …

Paraganglioma of the urinary bladder: A case report and discussion of the literature.

Urinary bladder paragangliomas (UBPGL) are rare neuroendocrine tumors that originate from extra-adrenal paraganglia in the bladder. We report the case of a 67-year-old patient who presented with a submucosal bladder tumor. A hypertensive crisis developed during the initial attempt at cystoscopic resection, and biopsies demonstrated a UBPGL. The importance of considering UBPGL in the differential diagnosis of submucosal bladder tumors is discussed. Appropriate perioperative blood pressure management and the choice of surgical approach can optimize outcomes and prevent morbidity.

[Bimodal and multimodal endoscopy of the urinary bladder in diagnosis and treatment].

White light cystoscopy is a precise instrument for the detection and treatment of papillary bladder tumors. Various additional macroscopic detection methods have been established. Some of them, especially PDD or NBI, have been shown to have an additional benefit on the recurrence rate of bladder tumors, so they should be used as part of the diagnosis and treatment when available. Other microscopic classification techniques or multimodality techniques are currently under development. Widespread use of these techniques is still pending. Newer modalities such as multi-parametric imaging or AI-ass

[Tuberculosis of the urinary bladder: a literature review. Part 1].

Tuberculosis remains a significant public health issue worldwide. In 2022, over 45 000 new tuberculosis cases were registered in Russia, corresponding to an incidence rate of 31.0 per 100 000 population. Among genitourinary tuberculosis, bladder involvement accounts for 10.6-52.3%. The clinical presentation of tuberculous cystitis mimics that of typical cystitis. Lack of specific symptoms, combined with insufficient clinical suspicion among phthisiatrists, often leads to delayed diagnosis and treatment, so that irreversible morphological changes have occurred in the bladder wall. This process
