[Occlusal plane control in hyperdivergents: regarding one case].

Management of occlusal plane inclination in the sagittal dimension is one of the main concerns of practitioners. Inclination maintenance or correction can condition the success and stability of treatment. By means of a clinical case, we will attempt to discuss the different aspects of management from diagnosis to treatment, bearing in mind the local and regional context. The adopted treatment plan takes into consideration the functional and esthetic issues specific to Moroccan patients without neglecting soft tissue harmony.

Changes in pharyngeal (airway) morphology in Class III Turkish female patients after mandibular setback surgery.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to evaluate changes in the pharyngeal and lower facial morphology in Turkish female Class III patients 1.5+/-0.4 years after mandibular setback surgery (bilateral sagittal split osteotomy), and orthodontic multi-bracket treatment. Only women with mandibular prognathism were selected because sex differences in pharyngeal airway changes were evident. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Lateral cephalograms of 25 Turkish female Class III patients (mean age: 25.4+/-2.6 years) with mandibular prognathism, were assessed before and 1.5+/-0.4 years after operation. Development of the curve of Spee.

INTRODUCTION: Ferdinand Graf von Spee is credited with characterizing human occlusal curvature viewed in the sagittal plane. This naturally occurring phenomenon has clinical importance in orthodontics and restorative dentistry, yet we have little understanding of when, how, or why it develops. The purpose of this study was to expand our understanding by examining the development of the curve of Spee longitudinally in a sample of untreated subjects with normal occlusion from the deciduous dentition to adulthood. METHODS: Records of 16 male and 17 female subjects from the Iowa Facial Growth Stu

Clinical and anatomical factors limiting treatment outcomes of gingival recession: a new method to predetermine the line of root coverage.

Complete root coverage is not always achievable, even in gingival recession with no loss of interproximal attachment and bone. The cemento-e … e healing process of a root coverage surgical technique) was predetermined by calculating the ideal vertical dimension of the interdental papilla of the tooth with the recession defect. This method was applied to 120 recession-type defects affecting non-molar teeth of 80 young healthy subjects that were treated with root coverage surgical procedures over the last 5 …

An evaluation of two-phase treatment with the Herbst appliance and preadjusted edgewise therapy.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the skeletal and dentoalveolar changes occurring during two-phase orthodontic treatment. A cephalometric study of Class II correction was carried out in 40 subjects (20 females, 20 males) who had been treated with the acrylic-splint Herbst appliance immediately followed by a second phase of preadjusted edgewise therapy. The average age at the start of Herbst therapy was 12.5 +/- 0.8 years for females and 13.6 +/- 1.2 years for males. Descriptive cephalometric data were compared with the normative values derived from the University of Michigan Elementar

Stability following superior repositioning of the maxilla by Le Fort I osteotomy: five-year follow-up.

Changes in dental and skeletal relationships were evaluated 5 years postsurgically in 49 patients whose maxilla had been superiorly repositioned by a Le Fort I osteotomy. All of the patients had at least 2 mm of intrusion at the maxillary incisor and molar; none had a mandibular ramus osteotomy or other osteotomy except genioplasty. Only 6.5% had 2 mm or greater of net vertical change in skeletal or dental landmarks at 1 year postsurgery. From 1 to 5 years postsurgery, minimal changes in skeletal and dental landmarks occurred in the majority of the patients, but approximately 25% of the patien

Craniofacial patterning in Klinefelter (47 XXY) adults.

Radiographic cephalometry incorporating a pattern profile analysis was used to compare 26 adult Klinefelter males from Finland with first degree adult relatives, 15 males and 14 females. Compared with female relatives, the 47 XXY males were larger in almost all craniofacial linear dimensions, but were similar in facial shape apart from greater mandibular prognathism. Mandibular dimensions in particular differed between the Klinefelter and unaffected males, the corpus length being larger, the ramus shorter and the gonial angle more obtuse in the 47 XXY group. The prominent facial profile, most

Transverse and vertical asymmetry of bilateral craniofacial structures in repaired unilateral and bilateral complete cleft lip and palate cases.

Fifty repaired complete cleft lip and palate cases (38 UCLP and 12 BCLP) in the age range of 6 to 14 years were evaluated for transverse and vertical asymmetry using postero-anterior cephalograms. A total of nine bilateral landmarks, representing upper face, mid face and lower face were used. Results showed that asymmetry was not confined to any single plane of reference but manifested in both dimensions--transverse and vertical. The UCLP group had greater asymmetry of mid face than the BCLP group. Asymmetry was found to be extending to distant areas besides the contiguous structures.

Mandibular Molar Distalization Using Interradicular Microimplants and Indirect Anchorage: A Case Report.

The nonsurgical management of skeletal Class III malocclusion is often challenging, particularly in adolescent or noncompliant patients. Sti … age to distalize the mandibular molars. The mandibular dentition was distalized with control of the vertical dimension, and clockwise rotation of the mandibular arch, together with mild incisor intrusion, contributed to anterior bite closure while maintaining the compensated inclination of the lower incisors. In this context, Class III correction with microimplant‑s …

OBJECTIVE: To identify the skeletal, dentoalveolar, and soft tissue changes that occur during Class II correction with the Cantilever Bite J … molars, and 1.1 mm mesial movement of the mandibular molars. The CBJ exhibited good control of the vertical dimension. The main side effect of the CBJ is that the vertical force vectors of the telescope act as lever arms and can produce mesial tipping of the mandibular molars. CONCLUSIONS: The Cantilever Bite Jumper corrects Class II malocclusions with similar per …

Dynamic 3D MRI of vocal fold oscillations: In vivo assessment of vocal fold thickness, contact area, and glottal area waveform across phonation types in comparison with high-speed imaging.

Conventional endoscopic imaging of vocal fold (VF) vibration provides only a two-dimensional superior view, missing essential vertical dynamics such as VF thickness and vertical displacement. Simulation studies have assigned these parameters important regulatory functions, underscoring the need for in vivo methods capturing the three-dimensional (3D) VF geometry and vibratory motion. In this in vivo case study, dynamic 3D VF MRI was applied in a professionally trained singer, achieving sub-millimeter spatial and sub-millisecond temporal resolution. Six phonation types were produced according t

Customized planning of the visible maxillary arch width in harmony with interparopia width and smile width for female facial aesthetics.

BACKGROUND: The visible maxillary arch width (VAW) is an important aesthetic-determining feature. To date, there is no well-established methodology to determine the aesthetically optimal VAW in customized treatment planning. METHODS: In this study, the common traits of the dentofacial configuration were investigated in most attractive Asian and Caucasian female smiles. The smiling photo of a subject was digitally modified based on combined variations of VAW, smile width (SW), transverse facial dimensions (TFD), and vertical facial dimensions. These modified photos were assessed for aesthetics

Stability of Class II Malocclusion Treatment with the Austro Repositioner Followed by Fixed Appliances in Brachyfacial Patients.

One of the goals of functional-appliance devices is to modify the vertical growth pattern, solving several kinds of malocclusion. This study aimed to evaluate Class II malocclusion treatment's stability with Austro Repositioner, followed by fixed appliances, and assess its capacity to modify vertical dimensions in brachyfacial patients. A test group of 30 patients (16 boys and 14 girls, mean 11.9 years old) with Class II malocclusion due to mandibular retrognathism and brachyfacial pattern treated with Austro Repositioner and fixed appliance were compared to a matched untreated Class II contro…
