Inflammation of temporomandibular joint increases neural activity in rat vestibular nucleus.

To determine whether the vestibular nuclei are affected by inflammation of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) region, we studied vestibular nucleus neural activity using two experimental groups: (1) normal saline 0.1cm(3) injection at right TMJ region, (2) 10% formalin 0.1cm(3) injection at right TMJ region. Neural activity after 24 hours was assessed by immunohistochemical staining with free-floating section at the level of interaural -1.30 mm to -2.00 mm for c-Fos. In inflammation group, formalin injection produced a bilateral increase in c-Fos at vestibular nucleus with ipsilesional side higher

Behavior of the vestibular nerve following labyrinthectomy.

Transtympanic labyrinthectomy was performed on 24 cats, and after survival times of one month to three years, the temporal bones were prepared for light microscopic study. The operated ears showed mean neuronal losses of 12% in six months, 24% in 1 year, 35% in 2 years, and 53% in 3 years. These was no evidence of regeneration of vestibular nerve fibers nor of formation of traumatic neuromata. The temporal bones of two human subjects who had undergone transtympanic labyrinthectomy are also presented; one shows atrophy of the vestibular nerves while the other exhibits proliferation of nerve fib

Dizziness and Imbalance in the Elderly: Age-related Decline in the Vestibular System.

Dizziness and imbalance are amongst the most common complaints in older people, and are a growing public health concern since they put older people at a significantly higher risk of falling. Although the causes of dizziness in older people are multifactorial, peripheral vestibular dysfunction is one of the most frequent causes. Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo is the most frequent form of vestibular dysfunction in the elderly, followed by Meniere's disease. Every factor associated with the maintenance of postural stability deteriorates during aging. Age-related deterioration of peripheral

BDNF mRNA expression is significantly upregulated in vestibular schwannomas and correlates with proliferative activity.

The expression of neurotrophic factors, such as artemin, glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF), neurturin, transforming growth factors (TGF)-beta1/beta2 and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), is enhanced in vestibular schwannomas compared to peripheral nerves. Furthermore, this upregulation may correlate with mitotic activity. Vestibular schwannoma arising from Schwann cells of the vestibular nerve are mostly benign and slow-growing. Most of the pathogenic mechanisms regulating the vestibular schwannoma growth process are unknown. An impaired growth regulation and imbalance

[Inferior vestibular neuritis: diagnosis using VEMP].

Vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (VEMP) are a new method to establish the functional status of the otolith organs. The sacculocollic reflex of the cervical VEMP to air conduction (AC) reflects predominantly saccular function due to saccular afferents to the inferior vestibular nerve. We describe a case of inferior vestibular neuritis as a rare differential diagnosis of vestibular neuritis. Clinical signs were a normal caloric response, unilaterally absent AC cVEMPs and bilaterally preserved ocular VEMPs (AC oVEMPs).

Epidemiology of vertigo.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Epidemiological findings on the distribution, determinants and outcome of vertigo can be used for clinical decision making and can help understand the underlying causes of vestibular diseases. This article gives an overview of the epidemiology of the vestibular symptom vertigo and of four specific vestibular disorders: benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, migrainous vertigo, Menière's disease and vestibular neuritis. RECENT FINDINGS: Based on a neurotologic survey of the general population, 1-year prevalence estimates for vertigo were 4.9%, for migrainous vertigo 0.89% and

Dizziness.

BACKGROUND: The article gives an overview of the most frequent forms of vertigo, that are of peripheral-labyrinthine, central-vestibular, psychogenic, or physiologic origin. Dizziness or vertigo is a result of a mismatch between 3 sensory systems: the vestibular, the visual, and the somatosensory systems. These systems are mutually interactive and redundant in that orientation and balance are guided by simultaneous reafferent cues. The functional ranges of the systems overlap, thus permitting them to compensate in part for each other's deficiencies. SUMMARY: Vertigo is not a well-defined dise

Dynamic expression of transcription factor Brn3b during mouse cranial nerve development.

During development, transcription factor combinatorial codes define a large variety of morphologically and physiologically distinct neurons. Such a combinatorial code has been proposed for the differentiation of projection neurons of the somatic and visceral components of cranial nerves. It is possible that individual neuronal cell types are not specified by unique transcription factors but rather emerge through the intersection of their expression domains. Brn3a, Brn3b, and Brn3c, in combination with each other and/or transcription factors of other families, can define subgroups of retinal ga

Ocular Movement Examination in Peripheral Vestibular Disorders as a Tool to Improve Diagnosis: A Literature Review.

Background and Objectives: This study reviews the current literature on ocular movements, specifically focusing on nystagmus associated with peripheral vestibular disorders, to enhance diagnostic accuracy. The evaluation of ocular movements, particularly nystagmus, provides essential insights into the function and dysfunction of the vestibular system, helping clinicians distinguish between peripheral and central causes of vertigo and imbalance. Materials and Methods: A comprehensive search of PubMed was conducted using key terms such as "ocular movements", "nystagmus", "vestibular nystagmus",

Subjective visual horizontal correlates better with ocular than with cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potentials.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the relationship between widely used otolith function tests: the Subjective Visual Horizontal (SVH) and Vestibular Evoked Myogenic Potentials (VEMP). METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed on 301 patients who underwent SVH, ocular and cervical VEMP (oVEMP and cVEMP) tests on the same day. Correlations between the mean SVH tilt and amplitude asymmetry ratios for bone-conducted (BC) oVEMP and air-conducted (AC) cVEMP were examined. Diagnoses included vestibular neuritis, stroke, vestibular migraine, Meniere's disease, sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) and

Inferior vestibular neuritis: 3 cases with clinical features of acute vestibular neuritis, normal calorics but indications of saccular failure.

BACKGROUND: Vestibular neuritis (VN) is commonly diagnosed by demonstration of unilateral vestibular failure, as unilateral loss of caloric response. As this test reflects the function of the superior part of the vestibular nerve only, cases of pure inferior nerve neuritis will be lost. CASE PRESENTATIONS: We describe three patients with symptoms suggestive of VN, but normal calorics. All 3 had unilateral loss of vestibular evoked myogenic potential. A slight, asymptomatic position dependent nystagmus, with the pathological ear down, was observed. CONCLUSION: We believe that these patients s

Postural control in episodic ataxia type 2: no evidence for increased vestibular excitability.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Patients with episodic ataxia type 2 (EA2) suffer from recurrent paroxysmal episodes of vertigo and oscillopsia. Pathophysiologically, altered neuronal excitability has been suspected. Vestibular excitability in 22 EA2 patients and 22 age-matched healthy participants was compared. METHODS: Galvanic vestibular stimulation (GVS) was used to assess vestibular excitability by vestibular motion perception thresholds and mean postural sway velocity during various visual and proprioceptive conditions in the two groups. Control stimuli using sham and no GVS were established to

Central projections of the saccular and utricular nerves in macaques.

The central projections of the utricular and saccular nerve in macaques were examined using transganglionic labeling of vestibular afferent neurons. In these experiments, biotinylated dextran amine was injected directly into the saccular or utricular neuroepithelium of fascicularis (Macaca fascicularis) or rhesus (Macaca mulatta) monkeys. Two to 5 weeks later, the animals were killed and the peripheral vestibular sensory organs, brainstem, and cerebellum were collected for analysis. The principal brainstem areas of saccular nerve termination were lateral, particularly the spinal vestibular nuc
