Evidence for motor preparation and planning comes from neural activity preceding neural commands to activate the effectors; such preparatory activity is observed in pallial areas controlling learned motor behaviors. Vocal learning in songbirds is an example of a learned, sequential motor behavior that is a respiratory motor act and where there is evidence for neuromuscular planning. Respiration is the foundation of vocalization, elucidating the neural control of song motor planning requires studying respiratory antecedents of song initiation. Despite the importance of respiration in song produ

This work demonstrates the effectiveness of using humans in the loop processes for constructing large training sets for machine learning tasks. A corpus of over 57 000 toothed whale echolocation clicks was developed by using a permissive energy-based echolocation detector followed by a machine-assisted quality control process that exploits contextual cues. Subsets of these data were used to train feed forward neural networks that detected over 850 000 echolocation clicks that were validated using the same quality control process. It is shown that this network architecture performs well in a va

Performing a stereotyped behavior successfully over time requires both maintaining performance quality and adapting efficiently to environmental or physical changes affecting performance. The bird song system is a paradigmatic example of learning a stereotyped behavior and therefore is a good place to study the interaction of these two goals. Through a model of bird song learning, we show how instability in neural representation of stable behavior confers advantages for adaptation and maintenance with minimal cost to performance quality. A precise, temporally sparse sequence from the premotor

The persisting threats on migratory bird populations highlight the urgent need for effective monitoring techniques that could assist in their conservation. Among these, passive acoustic monitoring is an essential tool, particularly for nocturnal migratory species that are difficult to track otherwise. This work presents the Nocturnal Bird Migration (NBM) dataset, a collection of 13,359 annotated vocalizations from 117 species of the Western Palearctic, compiled through a crowd-sourcing effort. The dataset includes precise time and frequency annotations gathered by dozens of bird enthusiasts ac

Peripartal autonomic nervous system function and early maternal behavior were investigated in 79 multiparous Holstein-Friesian cows. Animals were allocated into four groups based on the technology of calving management: 1) unassisted calving in a group pen (UCG; N=19), 2) unassisted calving in an individual pen (UCI; N=21), 3) assisted calving with appropriately timed obstetrical assistance (ACA; N=20), and 4) assisted calving with premature obstetrical assistance (ACP; N=19). Heart rate, the high frequency (HF) component of heart rate variability (HRV) as a measure of vagal activity and the r

BACKGROUND: Intraoperative neural monitoring (IONM) has gained widespread acceptance as an adjunct to the gold standard of visual identification of the recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) during thyroid surgery. Currently, laryngeal electromyography (EMG) recording during IONM is almost always performed using endotracheal tube (ETT) surface electrodes placed adjacent to vocal folds originating from the inner surface of the thyroid cartilage (TC). Therefore, it was hypothesized that surface recording electrodes placed on the outer surface of the TC should enable access to the EMG response of the vo

Two animal models of trait anxiety, HAB/LAB rats and mice, are described, representing inborn extremes in anxiety-related behavior. The comprehensive phenotypical characterization included basal behavioral features, stress-coping strategies and neuroendocrine responses upon stressor exposure with HAB animals being hyper-anxious, preferring passive coping, emitting more stressor-induced ultrasonic vocalization calls and showing typical peculiarities of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenocortical axis and line-specific patterns of Fos expression in the brain indicative of differential neuronal act

Laryngologists have long recognized that assessment of the mucosal wave is an important part of laryngeal evaluation. This is the first report of a noninvasive measurement of vocal fold displacement velocity in an in vivo canine model. A newly developed calibrating endoscopic instrument capable of measuring distances on the vocal fold surface is described. Displacement velocity was determined in three dogs and compared to physiologic measures in the in vivo phonation model. The results indicate that the calculated displacement velocity is linearly proportional to traveling wave velocity and fu

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to estimate the value of a new surgical procedure in the treatment of the chronic unilateral laryngeal paralysis.
METHODS: The recurrent laryngeal nerve of the left side of the dog was totally cut and served as a model of unilateral laryngeal paralysis at the first step of the research. The adductor and abductor branches of the recurrent laryngeal nerve were then, selected and cut. Afterwards, they were micro-sutured respectively with one branch of ansa cervicalis and phrenic nerve immediately (group 1) and 4 months later (group 2). Six months after this re

Bilateral vocal cord paralysis is fortunately an uncommon occurrence although the incidence of this injury secondary to external neck trauma is increasing. In general, a patient with this lesion is faced with the choice between adequate airway at the expense of a breathy, weak voice or a fairly good voice with the need for a permanent tracheotomy. In an effort to provide a better solution to this dilemma, an attempt has been made to develop a means of reinnervation of at least one vocal cord without the problems inherent in the usual nerve anastomosis techniques. After extensive preliminary wo

The use of Gore-Tex (expanded polytetrafluoroethylene) for medialization laryngoplasty has recently been described. Clinically, this laryngeal implant has performed well, but no animal studies evaluating the use of this implant in the larynx have been published. This study examines the gross and histologic response of the rabbit larynx to the Gore-Tex implant. Five rabbits underwent bilateral medialization with the Gore Thyroplasty Device. The vocal folds were left innervated and mobile. After 6 months, the rabbits were painlessly sacrificed and the implants were evaluated by gross inspection

The aim of this study was to provide the bilateral reinnervation of the posterior cricoarytenoid (PCA) muscles by the superior root of the right phrenic nerve. In six adult cats, the right phrenic root was anastomosed to the distal stump of the transected recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) on the same side. The RLN adductor branch was then cut and anastomosed to a nerve graft whose end was carried contralaterally and sutured to the left RLN or to the left PCA muscle. The phrenic fibers regrowing along the RLN abductor branch reinnervated the right PCA muscle and restored the inspiratory abduction

In sexually reproducing animals, accurate sex recognition is fundamental for successful mating. Bidirectional signals are a sexually selected mechanism of mate recognition1, involving different, sex-specific cues to signal identity and reduce recognition errors. However, when these signals are insufficiently divergent or become obscured by environmental noise, the probability of misidentification can increase dramatically2. Among frogs, same-sex sexual behavior is widespread and is frequently attributed to sex-recognition errors, ambiguous signals, male-biased sex ratios or the instinct to ind
