Modeling Electromagnetically Driven Thermoacoustic Pressure Wave Buildup in the Brain.

The proliferation of wireless communications, high-power microwave (HPM) sources, radar, and other microwave technology has necessitated research into potential HPM bioeffects. Here we present a multi-physics simulation study to probe the possible generation of thermoacoustic pressure waves from incident electromagnetic pulses, in a layered dielectric representation of the human head. The model is designed to offer flexibility with customizable pulse length, rise and fall times, repetition rates, applied electric field value, and user-defined directional orientation. Our results suggest that p

AI-Assisted Self-Powered Wearable Dual-Mode Sensor With TENG and Stretchable Optical Fiber for Neurological Disorder Diagnostics.

Wearable sensors hold significant potential for managing lower-limb dysfunction in neurological disorders, but current systems remain constrained by unimodal sensing, external power dependence, and limited diagnostic capabilities. Here, we present a wireless wearable dual-mode sensor (WDMS) integrating three polyurethane-based flexible optical strain (PFOS) components with a contact-separation mode triboelectric nanogenerator (CS-TENG). The PFOS components are used for muscle signal monitoring, while the CS-TENG simultaneously monitors plantar pressure and harvests biomechanical energy to powe

Transcranial optogenetic brain modulator for precise bimodal neuromodulation in multiple brain regions.

Transcranial brain stimulation is a promising technology for safe modulation of brain function without invasive procedures. Recent advances in transcranial optogenetic techniques with external light sources, using upconversion particles and highly sensitive opsins, have shown promise for precise neuromodulation with improved spatial resolution in deeper brain regions. However, these methods have not yet been used to selectively excite or inhibit specific neural populations in multiple brain regions. In this study, we created a wireless transcranial optogenetic brain modulator that combines hig

Security correction control of stochastic cyber-physical systems subject to false data injection attacks with heterogeneous effects.

In this paper, the interconnected observer intervention-based security correction control idea is proposed for stochastic cyber-physical systems (CPSs) subjected to false data injection attacks (FDIAs). The FDIAs are injected into the controller-to-actuator channel by the adversary via wireless transmission. In particular, the FDIAs with heterogeneous effects are constructed, which consist of periodic attacks with unknown parameters and bias injection attacks with asymptotic convergence property. A novel interconnected adaptive observer structure is designed to online estimate the heterogeneou

Unreal that feels real: artificial intelligence-enhanced augmented reality for treating social and occupational dysfunction in post-traumatic stress disorder and anxiety disorders.

Background: Fear- and trauma-related conditions, such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and social phobia, often manifest as socially avoidant behaviours, which commonly contribute to social and occupational disability transdiagnostically. While gold-standard treatments (i.e. exposure therapy, psychotropic medications) are effective, they are hindered by high dropout rates and limited impact on real-world functioning. Furthermore, most existing interventions only target symptom reduction, with few addressing avoidance-related deficits in social and occupational functioning. Objectives: T

Future of uniportal video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery-emerging technology.

Uniportal VATS poses unique difficulties to the surgeon, mainly as a consequence of operating through a small single incision. The instruments in uniportal VATS have limited movement through the small incision. In addition, the approach to the surgical operating site is unidirectional, which may restrict vision and retraction, and unavoidably suffers from instrument fencing. Recent thoracoscopic technology in the form of a wide variable angled lens has to some extent improved these shortcomings. The development of an extendable flexible thoracoscope and wireless steerable endoscope (WSE) syste

A wireless optogenetic stimulation system for long-term function evaluation of mice forelimb with sub-nerve resolution.

Peripheral nerve transfer is an effective surgical method in restoring motor functions of upper limb after peripheral nerve injuries. However, the outcome of individual function recovery is less predictable. It is crucial to access the long-term evaluation of function improvement. Here, we developed a fully implantable multisite optogenetic stimulation system, which is tailored for wireless, reprogrammable and long-term function evaluation of peripheral nerve plexus with sub nerve resolution. In Thy1-ChR2-EYFP mice, our system induced distinct compound muscle action potentials and forelimb mov

Wireless inertial measurement unit-based methods for measuring lumbopelvic-hip range of motion are valid compared with optical motion capture as golden standard.

BACKGROUND: Lumbopelvic-hip motions in the sagittal plane are critical in distinguishing between individuals with Low Back Pain (LBP) and healthy counterparts. Assessment of these motions involves evaluation of the range of motion, timing, coordination, alignment, and functional performance. Traditional, golden standard devices, like optical motion capture systems, are costly and limited to lab settings. Alternatively, Inertial Measurement Units (IMUs) potentially offer an affordable solution that allows movement assessment in daily life. METHODS: This cross-sectional study compares two IMU-b
