Diaphragmatic breathing exercises in recovery from fatigue-induced changes in spinal mobility and postural stability: a study protocol.

Prolonged periods of sitting at work can increase trunk muscle fatigue from the continuous contraction of deep trunk muscles. Insufficient activity of these muscles can decrease muscular support to the spine and increases stress on its passive structures. This can lead to reduced spinal mobility and impaired postural stability. It may also stimulate nociceptor activity leading to pain. However, frequently used recovery modalities such as muscle strengthening and stretching exercises, can be time-consuming, impractical, and difficult to implement in the workplace. Diaphragmatic breathing exerci

Negative-pressure-assisted ventilation lowers driving pressure and mechanical power in an ARDS model.

Increased lung heterogeneity from regional alveolar collapse drives ventilator-induced lung injury in patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). New methods of preventing this injury require study. Our study objective was to determine whether the combination of temporary transvenous diaphragm neurostimulation (TTDN) with standard-of-care volume-control mode ventilation changes lung mechanics, reducing ventilator-induced lung injury risk in a preclinical ARDS model. Moderate ARDS was induced using oleic acid administered into the pulmonary artery in pigs, which were ventilated fo

The role of adjustment of expiratory effort in the control of vocal intensity: clinical assessment of phonatory function.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the role of the adjustment of expiratory effort in the control of vocal intensity. STUDY DESIGN: An intensity-loading test was performed by using the airway interruption method. Three groups of subjects were used: a control group thought to resemble normal vocal fold closure, a group of patients with Reinke's edema thought to represent increased mass at the level of the vocal folds, and a group with vocal fold paralysis that was thought to represent a group with lack of adequate vocal fold closure. RESULTS: In the control group, expiratory lung pressure and airway res

Influence of expiratory loading and hyperinflation on cardiac output during exercise.

Patients with obstructive lung disease are exposed to expiratory loads (ELs) and dynamic hyperinflation as a consequence of expiratory flow limitation. To understand how these alterations in lung mechanics might affect cardiac function, we examined the influence of a 10-cm H2O EL, alone and in combination with voluntary hyperinflation (ELH), on pulmonary pressures [esophageal (Pes) and gastric (Pg)] and cardiac output (CO) in seven healthy subjects. CO was determined by using an acetylene method at rest and at 40 and 70% of peak work. At rest and during exercise, EL resulted in an increase in

Evaluation of patients with emphysema for lung volume reduction surgery. Washington University Emphysema Surgery Group.

Lung volume reduction surgery (LVRS) is performed to alleviate the dyspnea of patients with emphysema and improve performance in the activities of daily living. Removing diseased and functionless lung may improve the function of remaining, less diseased lung by (1) increasing elastic recoil pressure, thereby increasing expiratory airflow rates, (2) decreasing the degree of hyperinflation resulting in improved diaphragm and chest wall mechanics, and (3) decreasing inhomogeneity resulting in decreased work of breathing and improved alveolar gas exchange. The guidelines used for patient assessmen…

Evaluation of carbon dioxide rebreathing during pressure support ventilation with airway management system (BiPAP) devices.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether carbon dioxide (CO2) rebreathing occurs in acute respiratory failure patients ventilated u … no significant effect on blood gases but found significant increases in VT, minute ventilation, and work of breathing. These findings are experimental and are clinical evidence that significant CO2 rebreathing occurs with the standard BiPAP system. This drawback can be overcome by using a non-rebreathing valve, but only at the expense of greater expiratory resistan …

Physiologic changes induced by theophylline in the treatment of apnea in preterm infants.

Ten preterm infants (birth weight 0.970 to 2.495 kg) with apnea due to periodic breathing (apneic interval = 5 to 10 seconds) or with "serious apnea" (greater than or equal to 20 seconds) were studied before and after the administration of theophylline. We determined the incidence of apnea, respiratory minute volume, alveolar gases, arterial gases and pH, "specific" compliance, functional residual capacity, and work of breathing. Theophylline decreased the incidence of apnea (P less than .05), increased respiratory minute volume (P less than 0.001), decreased (PACO2 (and PaCO2 P less than 0.00…

Unveiling the complexity of Arnold's tongues in a breathing-soliton laser.

Synchronization occurs ubiquitously in nature and science. The synchronization regions generally broaden monotonically with the strength of the forcing, thereby featuring a tongue-like shape in parameter space, known as Arnold's tongue. Such a shape is universal, prevailing in many diverse synchronized systems. Theoretical studies suggest that, under strong external forcing, the shape of the synchronization regions can change substantially and even holes can appear in the solid patterns. However, experimentally accessing these abnormal regimes is quite challenging mainly because many real-worl

Mechanism of adaptation in the mandibular condyle of the mouse. An organ culture study.

The cranial base and whole mandible of 7-day-old mice were cultured for 1 or 2 weeks in a novel organ culture system that provided an articulating movement for the temporomandibular joints. The mandibles were articulating either in a closed or in an open position to simulate the in vivo mouth-breathing pattern. The reactions of the condylar processes were followed macroscopically and microscopically after osteoid or von Kossa staining. After 1 week of culture, small differences were found in the shape of the condylar processes between the two groups. After 2 weeks, significantly increased grow

A self-breathing electrode enabled by interface regulation and gradient wettability engineering for industrial H2O2 electrosynthesis.

High-performance gas diffusion electrodes (GDEs) are essential for electrochemical H2O2 production, yet conventional catalyst layers (CLs) suffer from PTFE-fused encapsulation and disordered pores that create mass-transport bottlenecks and suppress three-phase interface (TPI) formation. Here, we introduce a non-fused particulate-packed catalyst/binder interface and elucidate the mechanisms governing TPI formation through 3D reconstruction and mesoscale LBM analyses. Guided by these insights, we construct a hierarchical gradient CL with ordered porosity and tunable wettability contrast, and mul

Rodent models of sleep apnea.

Rodent models of sleep apnea have long been used to provide novel insight into the generation and predisposition to apneas as well as to characterize the impact of sleep apnea on cardiovascular, metabolic, and psychological health in humans. Given the significant body of work utilizing rodent models in the field of sleep apnea, the aims of this review are three-fold: first, to review the use of rodents as natural models of sleep apnea; second, to provide an overview of the experimental interventions employed in rodents to simulate sleep apnea; third, to discuss the refinement of rodent models

[Severe asthma was found to be an asthma-like condition. Consider reduced doses of cortisone].

A middle-aged man with variable breathing problems and frequent acute attacks, diagnosed as severe bronchial asthma, was given high-dose oral corticosteroid treatment. Owing to the somewhat atypical history, and normal lung function test results despite severe concomitant asthma-like symptoms, the diagnosis was reconsidered. As a new diagnostic work-up showed the presence of a disease of slight to moderate severity, it was decided to taper off the corticosteroid treatment. Within one year the daily dose of prednisolone was decreased from 40 to 7.5 mg without deterioration of the airway symptom

Sleep-related breathing disturbances in adolescents with treatment resistant depression.

OBJECTIVE/BACKGROUND: A considerable subgroup of adolescents does not respond to standard antidepressant treatments. There are some indications that sleep disordered breathing may contribute to refractory depression in adults, but little is known about how it may relate to the course of depressive disorders in adolescents. Focussing on a group of Canadian adolescents with treatment resistant depression (TRD), this study aimed to investigate how the severity of residual depressive symptoms following unsuccessful antidepressant trials relates to breathing disturbances during sleep. PATIENTS/MET

Ultrasensitive detection of colorectal cancer biomarkers in exhaled breath using superhydrophobic HCPs-2Br-based SPME-GC-MS with a two-step pre-enrichment strategy.

BACKGROUND: Exhaled breath has emerged as a promising biospecimen for disease diagnosis, particularly for non-invasive screening. However, the detection of disease biomarkers in exhaled breath presents significant challenges due to their ultra-trace levels and the complex, high-humidity composition of the breath matrix. Consequently, there is a pressing need to develop innovative pretreatment technologies to enable the sensitive detection of colorectal cancer (CRC)-related biomarkers for early non-invasive screening. RESULTS: In this study, a superhydrophobic dibromodibenzothiophene-based hyp
