Maternity Care Deserts: An Urgent Public Health Problem in Need of Financial Solutions.

More than 80% of US maternal deaths are preventable yet maternity care in the United States (US) is becoming increasingly difficult to access. Recent years have seen the rise of maternity care deserts, defined as an area with no hospitals or birth centers offering obstetric care and without any obstetric providers. The number of counties without a birthing facility continues to grow, and 1/3 of US counties lack an obstetric clinician. The US has a maternal mortality rate that is 2-3 times greater than similar high-income countries, a steady rise in severe maternal morbidity, and markedly high

Awareness Level, Knowledge and Attitude Among Lebanese Medical Students Towards Interprofessional Collaboration Between Healthcare Professionals: A Cross-Sectional National Study.

Interprofessional collaboration (IPC) is essential for effective, patient-centered healthcare, requiring coordinated efforts among diverse health professionals. Interprofessional education (IPE) prepares medical students to understand their own roles and those of their colleagues, fostering communication, teamwork, and mutual respect. In Lebanon, IPE integration remains limited, and students' awareness, knowledge, and attitudes toward IPC are underexplored. This cross-sectional national study was conducted from December 2023 to December 2024 among 608 medical students from all accredited Leban

How Early Career Family Medicine Women Physicians Negotiate Their First Job After Residency.

BACKGROUND: Nested within a growing body of evidence of a gender pay gap in medicine are more alarming recent findings from family medicine: a gender pay gap of 16% can be detected at a very early career stage. This article explores qualitative evidence of women's experiences negotiating for their first job out of residency to ascertain women's engagement with and approach to the negotiation process. METHODS: We recruited family physicians who graduated residency in 2019 and responded to the American Board of Family Medicine 2022 graduate survey. We developed a semistructured interview guide

Differential effects of healthcare worker burnout on psychotropic medication use and misuse by occupational level.

PURPOSE: Burnout has been well examined among physicians and other high-wage, high-autonomy healthcare positions. However, lower-wage healthcare workers with less workplace autonomy (e.g., medical assistants, nurses' aides) represent a substantial proportion of the workforce, but remain understudied. We aimed to examine the effects of burnout on psychotropic medication use and misuse and whether these effects differed by occupational level. METHODS: In March 2022, we collected data from a diverse sample of US healthcare workers (N = 200) and examined the cross-sectional relationship between b

Building a System to Engage and Sustain Research Careers for Physicians.

There are increasing needs for physician-investigators to translate the rapid expansion of knowledge, technology/interventions, and big data into the clinical realm at a time of increasing age-related disabilities and communicable diseases. Yet, the number of physician-investigators has continued to decline, and only a small number of medical school graduates in the United States are actively engaged in research. This problem may be particularly pronounced in small- and medium-sized academic institutions due to more limited educational and mentoring infrastructure. Neither efforts by the feder

Moving Person-Centered Care Planning From Theory Into Practice: Patient Perspectives.

INTRODUCTION: Persons with multiple chronic conditions often receive care from a complicated network of multiple providers across multiple health systems unique to their conditions, needs, available resources, and insurance. Patients must navigate this healthcare system, which is a difficult and complicated process with just one provider or system, let alone multiple. Developing new solutions to overcome the systemic challenges within healthcare systems to provide high-quality, comprehensive, person-centered care for persons living with, or at risk for, multiple chronic conditions is critical.

Scoping Review of Outcome Measures Used in Lived Experience-Led Mental Health Services.

INTRODUCTION: Service users have long advocated for alternative services led by people with firsthand or lived experience of mental health challenges. While several lived experience-led services, such as peer respites, are available, their evaluations rarely incorporate outcome measures to assess impact, thereby limiting evidence of their validity as alternatives to clinical services. The aim of this review was to identify and describe the outcome and experience measures used in lived experience-led services to better understand how evidence of their viability and acceptability is captured, an

Psychosocial Impacts of COVID-19 and Racial Injustice on Undergraduate Research Trainees.

Undergraduate research programs (URPs) play an important role in preparing the next cohort of professionals in the health research workforce. URPs also provide continuity and structure during times of stress and uncertainty, like the COVID-19 pandemic and racial reckoning of 2020. This mixed-methods study describes the relationships between student stressors and educational experiences while examining program factors that might have mitigated negative consequences. Participants of an NIH-funded URP, BUILD (Building Infrastructure Leading to Diversity), aimed to increase the number of students

Medical termination of pregnancy in general practice in Australia: a descriptive-interpretive qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Australian Government approval in 2012 for the use of mifepristone and misoprostol for medical termination of pregnancy (MTOP) allows general practitioners (GPs) to provide early gestation abortion in primary care settings. However, uptake of the MTOP provision by GPs appears to be low and the reasons for this have been unclear. This study investigated the provision of and referral for MTOP by GPs. METHODS: We undertook descriptive-interpretive qualitative research and selected participants for diversity using a matrix. Twenty-eight semi-structured interviews and one focus group (
