Work-related violence and incident use of psychotropics.

Although the mental health consequences of domestic violence are well documented, empirical evidence is scarce regarding the mental health effects of violence in the workplace. Most studies have used data from small occupation-specific samples, limiting their generalizability. This article examines whether direct exposure to work-related violence is associated with clinically pertinent mental health problems, measured by purchases of psychotropics (antidepressants, anxiolytics, hypnotics), in a cross-occupational sample of 15,246 Danish employees free from using psychotropics at baseline. Psychological violence, subjective well-being, and burnout among healthcare workers: The roles of sleep disturbance and perceived occupational infection risk.

BACKGROUND: Psychological violence (PCV), which includes verbal abuse, bullying, intimidation, sexual harassment and ethnic discrimination, is the most frequently reported form of workplace violence in health care and a well-documented correlate of burnout. Healthcare workers (HCWs) in infectious disease services face this psychosocial hazard alongside two further, structurally persistent conditions: impaired recovery through disturbed sleep, and the appraised risk of acquiring infection at work. How these demands combine with workers' personal psychological resources is not well understood. …

Understanding Violence Toward Canadian Nurses From Patients' Family and Visitors as a Potentially Psychologically Traumatic Event.

AIM: In this study, we explore qualitatively the types and extent of violence perpetrated against Canadian nurses. BACKGROUND: With the growing shortage of professional nurses globally, prioritizing the safety and well-being of nurses is essential. Workplace violence is a critical factor that may aggravate exposure to potentially psychologically traumatic events (PPTEs) and negatively affect nurses' mental health and well-being. Research has found that patients' family members and other visitors are the second highest perpetrators of health care violence against nurses. METHOD: Using a groun…

The physician's unique role in preventing violence: a neglected opportunity?

BACKGROUND: Episodes of explosive rage and violence comprise a symptom complex which can have a devastating effect on a person's life. In the community this behavior is seen as workplace violence, domestic abuse and road rage, while in the clinical setting, this behavior is rarely mentioned by patients, despite evidence that it can signify an important biological disorder that may afflict more than three percent of the population. DISCUSSION: Patients are often reluctant to seek help for episodic attacks of rage, especially attacks which are accompanied by physical violence. Although, in the …

Violence Against Children in Afghanistan: Community Perspectives.

Violence against children (VAC) is a significant international problem and, in Afghanistan, is particularly complex given the country has suffered armed conflict and extreme poverty for more than 30 years. The aim of this study was to examine the level of knowledge and observation of VAC by community leaders, professional groups, and business owners in three Afghan districts. A survey of community and religious leaders; health, socio-legal, and education professionals; and business owners from Kabul, Jalalabad, and Torkham (n = 182) was conducted. Structured interviews included qualitative and

Categorization and hierarchy of workplace bullying strategies: a Delphi survey.

This paper reports a study of the characteristics of psychological abuse strategies deployed in the workplace (mobbing or workplace bullying). Based on a literature review, the aim of the present study is two fold: firstly to propose a new taxonomy of mobbing strategies and to provide an operational definition for each of them, and secondly, to assess this taxonomy with the aid of several experts, by using a Delphi survey, and to evaluate the severity of each of the mobbing strategies. The experts were asked to evaluate the adequacy and the severity of the definitions for each mobbing strategy

Assessment of Non-physical User Violence and Burnout in Primary Health Care Professionals. The Modulating Role of Job Satisfaction.

INTRODUCTION: Growing concern about workplace violence shows the need for an evaluation in specific contexts in order to identify the particularities of each professional group. The health sector consists of a group of professionals with high exposure to violence, specially from users. There are differences depending on the professional category or unit in which the professional works. In this regard, Primary Health Care (PHC) is characterized by a personalized and continuous patient treatment over time, which is not exempt from cases of violence. Among the commonly studied consequences of the…

Safe in the city.

Workplace danger and violence are complex problems that affect nurses more often than is recognized. The home healthcare work environment is challenging enough without the additional risks associated with working out in the open or within a client's home. Every clinician working in home health today understands the demands of visits or extended care in the home and often reluctantly accepts the involved risk. The clinician working in the rural setting may experience similar challenges, but in large metropolitan cities, it has become increasingly frightening as crime, drug use, gangs, violence,
