We used counterimmunoelectrophoresis (CIEP) with rabbit antibodies to Dirofilaria immitis and Brugia malayi to detect soluble filarial antigen in sera collected in a Wuchereria bancrofti-endemic area in South India. Filarial antigen was detected in 38 of 38 sera from microfilaremic patients, 3 of 48 sera from amicrofilaremic patients with lymphatic pathology, and 3 of 5 sera from former microfilaria carriers with negative blood examinations 6 months or more after diethylcarbamazine therapy. One of 32 endemic control sera, 0 of 35 nonendemic sera, and 0 of 20 B. malayi sera were positive. Antig…

Lymphatic filariasis is common in tropical countries and is endemic in India. Filariasis presenting with pleural effusion is an unusual presentation. Malignancy in association of filarial pleural effusion is extremely rare. We report a case of a 60-year-old female who presented with chest pain, loss of weight and breathlessness for a few months. Pleural fluid examination revealed malignant cells, along with microfilaria of Wuchereria bancrofti.

Lymphatic filariasis is caused by infection with the filarial nematodes Brugia malayi, Brugia timori, Wuchereria bancrofti and Onchocerca volvulus which collectively infect about 200 million persons throughout the world. Protein sequence homology analysis of a major nematode antigen suggested that it was a class II aminoacyl-tRNA synthetase. The overproduction, purification and verification that the major B. malayi antigen is an asparaginyl-tRNA synthetase is described.

Metrifonate, in doses of 10 mg/kg for 3 consecutive days, demonstrated partial microfilaricidal activity against Onchocerca volvulus in humans. Higher doses were not investigated because of the toxic reactions obtained and the absence of monitoring of the blood cholinesterase levels. Spaced doses of 10 mg/kg every 2 weeks or once monthly up to 3 doses showed neither micro- nor macrofilaricidal activity against Wuchereria bancrofti.

Levels of circulating filarial antigen (Og4C3) and IgG4 antibodies to a filarial protease were determined in subjects of Wuchereria bancrofti exposed sera from Orissa, India. In addition to all individuals with antigenaemia (microfilaraemia), IgG4 antibodies were also detected in some individuals without antigenaemia. A 2-year longitudinal follow-up indicated that IgG4 seropositivity in asymptomatic amicrofilaraemics could be a risk factor for acquiring infection (antigenaemia).

Analysis of log normal parasite densities of Wuchereria bancrofti in the mosquito Culex pipiens fatigans collected in the suburbs of Colombo, Sri Lanka, has shown a decreasing parasite load with age of infection. The median density of microfilarial intake in the natural population was 10.3, but this had decreased to 2.6 by the infective stage. Of the total microfilariae ingested, 51.9% were found in the thorax 12--17 hours after infection of the mosquitoes in the laboratory. Further decrease in parasite density during development could not be attributed to filarial mortality in the mosquito bu…

This paper discusses five parasitic diseases: American trypanosomiasis (Chagas disease), dracunculiasis, lymphatic filariasis, onchocerciasis and schistosomiasis. The available technology and health infrastructures in developing countries permit the eradication of dracunculiasis and the elimination of lymphatic filariasis due to Wuchereria bancrofti. Blindness due to onchocerciasis and transmission of this disease will be prevented in eleven West African countries; transmission of Chagas disease will be interrupted. A well-coordinated international effort is required to ensure that scarce reso…

Lymphatic filariasis (LF), a nematode disease transmitted by arthropod vectors, is repeatedly reported in immigrant population. This disease is not endemic in Iran; however, different species of mosquitoes, capable of transmission of parasite microfilaria, are distributed in the country. Hereby, incidental detection of an imported case of LF due to Wuchereria bancrofti in an Indian worker in Iran is reported. Identification of the case was performed based on morphological and morphometrical characteristics of microfilaria and PCR sequencing.

In some parasitic infection such as toxoplasmosis, specific IgA is a highly reliable marker of active infection. In bancroftian filariasis, only 10 of 20 (50%) and 3 of 20 (15%) of the microfilaremic patients were positive for IgA anti-Brugia malayi using respectively indirect ELISA and immunocapture ELISA tests. As regard to these low sensitivities, the detection of specific IgA is unlikely to be a useful test for the diagnosis of active Wuchereria bancrofti infection.

The distribution of human filariae in Indonesia has not changed significantly since initial reports of the disease were made in 1928. Wuchereria bancrofti and Brugia malayi are widely distributed but the newly described Brugia timori appears to be restricted to the Lesser Sunda Islands. W. bancrofti and B. timori in Indonesia are nocturnally periodic and B. malayi has nocturnally periodic and B. malayi has nocturnally periodic and nocturnally subperiodic strains.

A 47-year-old Indian male presented with an inguinal mass clinically suspicious as a tumor. Histological examination of the excised mass demonstrated tissue reaction to degenerating intravascular adult filarial worms. The worms have been identified as a lymphatic filariae, most probably Wuchereria bancrofti. The case report underscores the need to maintain suspicion of genitourinary filarial lesions in non-endemic areas and describes atypical vascular lesions induced by lymphatic filariae.

526 people were surveyed in a village called Chudamani, in Balasore district of Orissa, for detection of asymptomatic microfilaria (mf) carriers. Of these 36 (6.8 per cent) were cases found to harbour mf; 19 cases had Brugia malayi, 4 Wuchereria bancrofti and 5 cases had mixed infection. In 8 cases, species could not be ascertained. For the first time after 1955, a focus of B. malayi has been detected in Orissa.

Reduced lymphocyte transformation to Wuchereria bancrofti microfilariae excretory-secretory antigen and Con A were observed in clinical filarial patients. Pre-incubation of normal human peripheral blood mononuclear cells with sera from filarial patients with clinical manifestations such as hydrocele and elephantiasis suppressed Con A induced responses. Effect of fractionated clinical filarial serum on Con A induced lymphocyte transformation showed that the inhibitory activity was associated with high molecular weight serum fraction.

Precise measurement of the parasite load in helminthic infections makes it possible to correlate morbidity, the individual response to treatment, and the best control methods. A membrane filtration technique was recently developed for quantifying Wuchereria bancrofti microfilaraemia. The present paper describes its application to onchocerciasis in a study on 107 patients in northern Togo. The technique is cheap and simple to apply under field conditions, and is extremely efficient at recovering microfilariae from skin snips.

Filariasis is common in tropical countries. Wuchereria bancrofti is the most common parasite which causes lymphatic filariasis in India. This paper reports the finding of microfilariae in cervicovaginal smear of a 61-year-old post menopausal woman with a brief review of literature. There are limited numbers of reports describing the presence of microfilariae in the cervicovaginal smears and even rarely as an incidental finding. It is very important to keep in mind and screen for microfilariae in the non-endemic areas also.

Lymphatic filariasis, in the Archipelago of Vanuatu, is due to Wuchereria bancrofti. The vector is Anopheles farauti, endophilic mosquito, which transmits also malaria. The level of endemicity was very high in the beginning of this century (microfilariae in blood: 60.9%, elephantiasis: 21%), and has dramatically decline now by detection and treatment of sick people (70 cases in 1986), mass chimioprophylaxis and protection against the vectors. But these actions must be continued to obtain the eradication of filariasis in the Vanuatu.

The development of immunodiagnostic tests (IDTs) for bancroftian filariasis must be aimed at defined objectives, such as the determination of exposure rates, the detection of microfilaraemia and the diagnosis of clinical filariasis. Assays for both antibody and antigen detection are necessary. Antigen determination may be more appropriate in the detection of microfilaraemia, but for clinical filariasis, antibody determination may prove more useful. The microfilarial surface antigens are very good candidates for this purpose. Determination of antibody to larval antigens may be the best way of e
