Impact of yellow fever on the developing world.

Yellow fever (YF) has remained a disease of public health importance since it was first described in the fifteenth century. At different periods in human history, YF has caused untold hardship and indescribable misery among populations in the Americas, Europe, and Africa. It brought economic disaster in its wake, constituting a stumbling block to development. Yellow fever is an arboviral infection with three epidemiological transmission cycles between monkeys, mosquitoes, and humans. It is an acute infectious disease characterized by sudden onset, with two phases of development separated by a …

The epidemic that never was: yellow fever in Hawaii.

The Kingdom of Hawaii suffered a disastrous series of epidemics starting from the first contact with Captain Cook's crew and continuing to the present. Despite the huge volume of shipping to and through Hawaii, one plague failed to appear. Yellow Jack (yellow fever) engendered more fear in sailors of the 19th century than any other disease. By 1910 the details of transmission were well-known and Hawaii met all the requirements for an epidemic. On October 30, 1910, the first case of shipboard yellow fever arrived at Honolulu but quarantine averted the threat. On October 28, 1911, a Hawaiian man…

A last martyr of the conquest of yellow fever.

The last of six Rockefeller Foundation investigators to die studying yellow fever was Theodore B. Hayne, 31 years old and recently married. He had returned to hazardous duty in West Africa knowing of the deaths of four other investigators within the previous 3 years.

[The epidemiology of yellow fever in Western Africa].

Observations made during the epidemics in Côte d'Ivoire (1982), Burkina Faso (1983), Nigeria (1986 and 1987) and Mali (1987), together with studies conducted in the last 10 years, particularly in Côte d'Ivoire, now make it possible, without calling into question the dynamics of yellow fever virus circulation in space and time, to redefine some features of the pattern suggested in 1977 and refined on a number of occasions up to 1983. The endemicity area is still the region of epizootic and enzootic sylvatic circulation, and contains the natural focus and the endemic emergence zone. --The natura…

A century of progress in combating yellow fever.

Yellow fever was responsible for several epidemics among the settlers in tropical areas of the Americas and Africa during the 17th to the 19th centuries. Scientific research into its cause and epidemiology was started at the beginning of the present century and progressed well ahead of other viral disease research. However, epidemics still occur and the worst one ever recorded was in Ethiopia in 1960-62. Epidemiological research has recently provided new findings on the ecology of the virus and the risk of epidemics. Recent breakthroughs in the molecular study of the virus should provide new t…
