Epidemiological studies of Schistosoma mattheei infections in cattle in the highveld and lowveld communal grazing areas of Zimbabwe.

During the period between January 1999 and December 2000, the distribution and seasonal patterns of Schistosoma mattheei infections in cattle in the highveld and lowveld communal grazing areas of Zimbabwe were determined through monthly coprological examination. Faecal samples of cattle were collected from 12 and nine dipping sites in the highveld and lowveld communal grazing areas, respectively. Patterns of distribution and seasonal fluctuations of the intermediate host-snail populations and the climatic factors influencing the distribution were also determined at monthly intervals from Novem…

Prevalence of urinary schistosomiasis and HIV in females living in a rural community of Zimbabwe: does age matter?

A cross-sectional study was conducted on 544 women living in Mupfure rural area of Zimbabwe to determine whether infection with urinary schistosomiasis is associated with HIV infection. Schistosoma haematobium infection was examined in urine samples and HIV infection was determined in sera. The prevalence of S. haematobium infection was highest (60%) in women below 20 years of age and declined to 29% in the oldest age group (test for trends, P<0.001). Overall, women infected with urinary schistosomiasis had an HIV prevalence of 33.3%, whilst women without urinary schistosomiasis had an HIV pre…

A monitoring study on the prevalence of dermatophilosis and parafilariosis in cattle in a smallholder semi-arid farming area in Zimbabwe.

The prevalences of dermatophilosis and parafilariosis were monitored for one year in cattle in Sanyati, a semi-arid smallholder farming area in Zimbabwe. The prevalence of dermatophilosis differed (p < 0.05) with season and among calves, cows, oxen and bulls. In bulls and cows, dermatophilosis lesions were localized mainly to the inguinal regions and between the front limbs. The prevalence and morbidity of dermatophilosis infection were significantly higher (p < 0.05) during the wet season than in the dry season. No mortalities were recorded. The prevalence of parafilariosis was similar to tha…

An evaluation of duckweed-based pond systems as an alternative option for decentralised treatment and reuse of wastewater in Zimbabwe.

A study was carried out in Zimbabwe to evaluate the performance of duckweed ponds as an option for treating and reusing wastewater in small, decentralised communities. The study focused on nitrogen and phosphorus removal, operational problems, and duckweed application. Two full-scale trial plants at Nemanwa and Gutu-Mupandawana growth points were used. Sewage samples were collected and analysed monthly from September 2000 to August 2001 for NO3, NH4(-)1 TKN, TP, COD, and other field measurements. The duckweed was harvested daily and fed to chickens. The Nemanwa plant had high nutrient levels d…

Clinical signs and symptoms in the assessment of immunodeficiency in men with subtype C HIV infection in Harare, Zimbabwe.

PURPOSE: Providing low-cost interventions such as co-trimoxazole as prophylaxis against opportunistic infections among HIV-infected individuals depends on the identification of those at risk. This article describes the prevalence of self-reported signs and symptoms and CD4 cell counts in a cohort of 447 HIV seropositive men. A scoring system using self-reported signs and symptoms was developed and tested in the prediction of low CD4 cell counts. This approach may allow health care providers in low-resource settings to predict severe immunodeficiency and to provide care. METHOD: Data on clinic

The epidemiology, immunology and morbidity of Schistosoma haematobium infections in diverse communities in Zimbabwe. I. The study design.

Recent studies on the immunology and epidemiology of Schistosoma haematobium infection have led to several new hypotheses regarding the relationships between the transmission of infection and the development of resistance to infection and also the associations between particular antibody and cellular reactivities with resistance or susceptibility to reinfection after chemotherapy. The study will extend the information on the development of protective immune responses during Schistosoma haematobium infection by examining these responses in groups of children and adults from areas in which diffe

Seasonal patterns in the transmission of Schistosoma haematobium, S. mattheei and S. mansoni in the highveld region of Zimbabwe.

The pattern of fluctuation in the population size of Bulinus globosus and Biomphalaria pfeifferi, in their infection rates with Schistosoma haematobium/S. mattheei and S. mansoni, respectively, and in the cercarial population size as monitored using hamster immersions, was elucidated in streams in the temperate highveld region of Zimbabwe over a 27-month period during 1982-1984. The results revealed that transmission of S. mansoni was erratic and unpredictable without a clearcut seasonal transmission pattern. In contrast, transmission of S. haematobium and S. mattheei exhibited a marked season…

Rethinking wellbeing measurement: Learning from a scale development study with adolescents living with HIV in Zimbabwe.

Adolescents living with HIV (ALHIV) in Eastern and Southern Africa experience challenges around medication adherence, mental health and wellbeing. Although interventions such as Zvandiri aim to strengthen mental health and wellbeing to impact HIV treatment outcomes, available measures often focus on negative outcomes or rely on positive psychology instruments developed in high-income settings. These tools may not adequately capture culturally embedded and relational dimensions of wellbeing. We describe the development of the Zvandiri Character Strength (ZCS) scale and draw methodological lesso

Estimating the Value of Novel Tests for Active Syphilis in Zimbabwe: How Much Overtreatment Can Be Avoided?

BACKGROUND: Syphilis diagnosis in resource-limited settings relies on syndromic management and treponemal-based antibody screening tests that cannot distinguish active infection from past-treated infection, both of which can lead to overtreatment. Point-of-care (POC) tests that detect active infection could reduce unnecessary treatment. METHODS: We developed an agent-based model of co-transmitting syphilis and human immunodeficiency virus, calibrated to Zimbabwe using population-based survey data (ZIMPHIA) and UNAIDS estimates. We modeled five scenarios involving two hypothetical new POC diag…

Patterns of linear growth among children and adolescents living with HIV on antiretroviral therapy in Zimbabwe and Zambia.

BACKGROUND: Adolescents with HIV (AWH) frequently exhibit impaired growth, which manifests as stunting and wasting. We studied trajectories in leg-length (appendicular), sitting (axial), and standing height among AWH on antiretroviral therapy (ART), determining peak height velocity (PHV) and age at PHV (aPHV). METHODS: Analyses used VITALITY trial data from Zimbabwe and Zambia (PACTR20200989766029), which recruited AWH (11-19 years) established on ART to determine whether vitamin D3/calcium supplementation improves bone health. The study enrolled participants between January and December 2021…
