In iron deficiency, zinc protoporphyrin (ZPP) is produced instead of heme, and the ZPP concentration in erythrocytes increased (normal value < 2.3 micrograms ZPP/g Hb). Content and distribution of zinc was studied in the pancreatic islets in human and rabbit diabetes. The diabetes development is followed by a decrease of zinc content in the insulin-producing cells in parallel with the severity of diabetes. The damage to the islet B-cells is the cause of zinc metabolism disturbance in the endocrine pancreas. Influence of high glucose concentration in the blood may be another factor.

Inadequate nutriture of zinc, copper and iron alter immunocompetence in humans and experimental animals. For each of these minerals deficient status leads to increased susceptibility to infectious illnesses. Specific components of the immune response may be altered in a variety of patients and models. Although many generalized functions for these nutrients could lead to altered immune function, specific functions for these minerals in immunity have not yet been identified. For zinc, copper and iron the importance of adequate nutrition in maintaining immunocompetency cannot be understated.

We examined blood Mg, Ca and Zn in 33 patients with senile, 18 patients with postmenopausal and 9 patients with medicamentous osteoporosis.
