A 62-year-old woman with mild myopia presented to her local optometrist for a routine examination and was found to have intraocular pressure (IOP) of 30 mm Hg in both eyes and cupped nerves. She had a family history of glaucoma in her father. She was started on latanoprost in both eyes and was referred for a glaucoma evaluation. An 81-year-old man with primary open-angle glaucoma on dorzolamide-timolol, bimatoprost and 0.02% netarsudil ophthalmic solution (Rhopressa), was found to have right lower lid basal cell carcinoma. The patient underwent Mohs surgery followed by repair of the right lower lid, with 3 episodes of wound dehiscence. When stopping netarsudil, appropriate granulation tissue was able to develop. While off netarsudil, the patient underwent Mohs resection of a left lower lid basal cell carcinoma, which was able to granulate well via secondary intention.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the vitamin D-PTH axis in thalassemia major (TM) in relation to hepatic siderosis liver iron content.
DESIGN AND PARTICIPANTS: In this case-controlled observational study, vitamin D-PTH axis was studied in 158 TM and 84 age and ethnicity-matched healthy nonthalassemic controls attending University College Hospital, London. Patients were classified as 25-hydroxy vitamin D (25-OHD) insufficient and sufficient if the value was less than or greater than 50 nmol/L, respectively. 25-OHD data were evaluated in relation to markers of iron load in TM.

BACKGROUND: Acute mesenteric ischemia is often caused by embolization of the mesenteric arterial circulation. Coherent intestinal injury due to ischemia and following reperfusion get visible on macroscopic and histologic level. In previous studies, application of glycine caused an ameliorated intestinal damage after ischemia-reperfusion in rats. In this study, hydroxyapatite (HAP) was surface-modified by the addition of β-alanine (β-Ala), and the ring-opening polymerization of γ-benzyl-L-glutamate-N-carboxy-anhydride (BLG-NCA) was subsequently initiated. BACKGROUND: Glutamate decarboxylase-like 1 (GADL1) decarboxylates aspartic acid to β-alanine in several mammalian tissues, particularly in the brain and skeletal muscle. β-alanine is a precursor to the antioxidant and osmoregulatory dipeptide carnosine (β-alanyl-l-histidine), as well as pantothenic acid and coenzyme A. Deletion of GADL1 reduces carnosine and anserine levels in multiple tissues, but the consequences for brain metabolism remain unclear. This study aimed to explore sex-specific metabolic and cellular effects of GADL1 and β-alanine depletion in different areas of the brain.

BACKGROUND: Muscle wasting during cancer cachexia is mediated by protein degradation via autophagy and ubiquitin-linked proteolysis.
