OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the role of the end-diastolic velocity (EDV) in the common carotid artery (CCA) as a marker of internal carotid artery (ICA) occlusion.
DESIGN: Validation of retrospective data in a prospective clinical study.
METHODS: The EDV in 94 patients with total ICA occlusion and in 24 patients with high grade (95-99%) unilateral ICA stenosis identified on extracranial carotid colour-flow Duplex imaging (CFDI) and arteriography was reviewed, and was retrospectively compared to the EDV of 176 normal individuals. Identification of patients with ICA occlusion was most accurate (99

A patients with anomalies of the main systemic veins developed lung cancer. In this patient, the large hemiazygos vein emptied into the left superior vena cava which communicated with the right atrium through the coronary sinus. The cancer was located in the right upper lobe and directly invaded the mediastinum. Fortunately, because of the absence of a right superior vena cava in the normal position, the tumor was completely resected by sleeve upper lobectomy without necessitating angioplastic procedures.

BACKGROUND: Assessing the soft tissue perfusion quantitatively in interventional suites before, during, and after interventional procedures is desired. The method, if possible, has to assess the perfusion volumetrically and quantitatively, be robust against lesion overlaps and patient motion, require no additional radiation dose, be quick (possibly in real-time), and fit to the clinical workflow well. We have developed a method called IPEN (for Intra-operative PErfusion assessment with No gantry rotation) that has potential to accomplish all of the desired goals except for the patient motion.

Non-invasive tests for the detection of peripheral artery disease (PAD) among individuals with diabetes mellitus are important to estimate the risk of amputation, ulceration, wound healing and the presence of cardiovascular disease, yet there are no consensus recommendations to support a particular diagnostic modality over another and to evaluate the performance of index non-invasive diagnostic tests against reference standard imaging techniques (magnetic resonance angiography, computed tomography angiography, digital subtraction angiography and colour duplex ultrasound) for the detection of P…

OBJECTIVE: The diagnostic accuracy of magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) in the infrapopliteal arterial segment is not well defined. This study evaluated the clinical utility and diagnostic accuracy of time-resolved imaging of contrast kinetics (TRICKS) MRA compared with digital subtraction contrast angiography (DSA) in planning for percutaneous interventions of popliteal and infrapopliteal arterial occlusive disease.
METHODS: Patients who underwent percutaneous lower extremity interventions for popliteal or tibial occlusive disease were identified for this study. Preprocedural TRICKS MRA w

RATIONALE: Thalassemia is an inherited disease associated with thromboembolic events (TEE) and cerebral artery disease. Here, we report a patient with beta-thalassemia presenting with intracerebral hemorrhage due to cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST), and intracranial aneurysms were found after examination. We believe that it is very rare for this patient to have two kinds of cerebrovascular diseases.
PATIENTSCONCERN: A 25-year-old woman suffered from headache for nine days. She had a history of thalassemia and splenectomy nine years prior.
DIAGNOSIS: Intracranial hemorrhage, Cerebral v

Isolated external iliac vein compression syndrome is an uncommon cause of nonthrombotic venous stenosis that causes chronic venous hypertension leading to painful swelling, skin discoloration, and ulcer formation. We present a case of an 86-year old man with refractory lower extremity edema for several years who had been treated with diuretics and antibiotics without relief of symptoms. With the help of invasive and noninvasive imaging modalities, we were able to diagnose and manage isolated nonthrombotic left external iliac vein stenosis as a result of ipsilateral external iliac artery compre

BACKGROUND. Sinistral portal hypertension (SPH) is caused by an obstruction of the splenic vein and is a potential cause of upper gastrointestinal bleeding. Although splenic arterial embolization (SAE) and splenic vein stenting are accepted treatment options for SPH, their outcomes have not been compared directly. OBJECTIVE. This retrospective study compared the outcomes of splenic vein stenting and SAE for SPH-related gastrointestinal bleeding. METHODS. Data of patients with SPH treated by interventional radiology between January 1, 2013, and June 1, 2019, who had at least 6 months of clinica

Mucosal melanoma arising in the middle ear or eustachian tube is uncommon. We present a patient with hearing loss and otalgia found to have mucosal melanoma which occurred in the eustachian tube with extension into the middle ear cavity and external ear canal. Otologic clinics was consulted and biopsy of the mass located at the external canal was performed to ascertain the pathological diagnosis. The patient refused immunotherapy and surgery instead of undergoing radiotherapy and died from hepatic metastasis 8 months later. The mucosal melanoma originated from the eustachian tube with extensio

AIM: Previous studies have found significant differences in clinical characteristics between pediatric and adult moyamoya disease (MMD) patients, but few studies have focused on the factors underlying these differences. We aimed to investigate the differences in leptomeningeal collateral (LMC) status between pediatric and adult MMD patients and to analyze the effects of LMCs on clinical characteristics and therapeutic prognosis.
METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 214 MMD patients from January 2014 to January 2016. Clinical characteristics and LMC status were compared between the pediatric a

PURPOSE: To report a rendezvous technique for subintimal revascularization of a chronic total occlusion (CTO) of the superficial femoral artery (SFA).
TECHNIQUE: This maneuver is appropriate after failure to cross a long SFA CTO via intra- and subintimal approaches from the ipsilateral femoral as well as retrograde posterior tibial artery (PTA) access sites. After predilation of the subintimal space from the femoral access, a reentry device was placed at the level of the first popliteal artery segment. A balloon was delivered via the retrograde PTA access and inflated at the corresponding lev
