Questions and answers about the effects of the depletion of the ozone layer on humans and the environment.

The ozone molecule contains three atoms of oxygen and is mainly formed by the action of the ultraviolet rays of the sun on the diatomic oxygen molecules in the upper part of the Earth's atmosphere (called the stratosphere). Atmospheric pollution near the Earth's surface can form localized areas of ozone. The stratospheric ozone layer protects life on Earth by absorbing most of the harmful ultraviolet radiation from the sun. In the mid 1970s it was discovered that some manmade products destroy ozone molecules in the stratosphere. This destruction can result in damage to ecosystems and to materi

Ammonium-nitrate ratio and soil moisture jointly regulate early-spring nitrogen acquisition through root architectural plasticity in apple.

Early-spring nitrogen (N) acquisition in perennial fruit trees represents a critical physiological bottleneck determining vegetative-reproductive balance, as remobilized woody-tissue N supports initial growth but excessive depletion compromises reproductive performance. The interactive effects of N form (NH4+ or NO3-) and soil moisture on root morphological plasticity and whole-plant N allocation during this period remain poorly characterized. We subjected 2-year-old apple trees to five NH4+/NO3- ratios under contrasting soil moisture regimes spanning budbreak to shoot elongation. Combined NH4

Climate and soil shape Daqu wheat quality and seed microbiome via rhizosphere taxa and microbial assembly.

The grain quality and seed microbiome of Daqu wheat are fundamental determinants of Daqu fermentation performance; however, the mechanisms by which cultivation environments influence these traits via rhizosphere microbial communities remain unclear. Bacterial and fungal communities across the bulk soil-rhizosphere-seed continuum of three wheat cultivars grown in four ecoregions were characterized using absolute quantitative amplicon sequencing. The rhizosphere microbiome was treated as a central intermediary, while the response variables were seed microbial diversity and grain-quality traits,

Sustainable Control of Carbon Emissions and Energy Consumption Through a Green Data Center Approach.

Data center management, the foundation of contemporary cloud computing, has made energy saving a top priority. Among other difficulties, the placement of virtual machines (VMs) has a major impact on data center resource and energy usage. Assigning VMs to physical machines (PMs) is a challenging NP-hard problem, especially in large-scale infrastructures where it is computationally infeasible to find an ideal solution. To solve the VM placement problem, the proposed study formulates it as a restricted optimization problem with the goal of preserving performance while lowering energy consumption.

Environmental Drivers and Explainable Modeling to Resolve Trace Metal Dynamics in a Lotic System.

Trace metal contamination in lotic freshwater systems exhibits pronounced heterogeneity arising from coupled hydrological connectivity, geochemical partitioning, and anthropogenic forcing, complicating exposure characterization in urban and peri-urban catchments. Addressing this complexity requires integrative analytical approaches capable of deciphering system-level controls, prompting an investigation of the environmental structuring and governing controls of dissolved trace metal signatures in a human-impacted stream using a system-oriented computational framework. To capture temporal varia

Nonlinear environmental controls and threshold effects on dust events in Iran's arid and semi-arid regions.

Wind erosion and dust storms are among the main causes of air pollution and represent one of the most significant environmental threats in the arid and semi-arid regions of Iran. This study was conducted to identify the controlling environmental factors and to predict the monthly frequency of dust events in these regions over the period 1990–2019. Relevant environmental predictors were selected using feature selection techniques. Several machine learning models were developed and evaluated using a train–test framework. The contribution of environmental factors to this goal was measured using S

Breed-specific physiological, biochemical, and tissue transcript responses of Harri and Naemi lambs to acute heat stress.

Climate change is an increasing threat to livestock production in arid regions. Understanding how indigenous breeds deploy immediate acute physiological and biochemical adjustments to acute hyperthermia at systemic and transcript-level indices is necessary to isolate initial homeostatic limits. This research compared the short-term thermoregulatory, metabolic, and multi-tissue transcriptomic adjustments of Naemi and Harri lambs exposed to acute heat stress. Forty male lambs (Naemi, Harri) were subjected to a 180-min exposure to either thermoneutral (25.0 °C Ta, 38.0% RH) or severe acute heat-s

Integrated metabarcoding and culturomics reveal the rot-suppressive rhizoplane mycobiome of cassava across contrasting agroecological habitats.

INTRODUCTION: Cassava stem and root rot caused by Fusarium falciforme (Fusarium solani species complex) constrains production in waterlogged tropical systems. In Kerala, India, disease endemicity differs markedly between wetlands and uplands, yet the ecological basis of this variation remains unresolved. We tested whether rhizoplane mycobiome structure and functional stability govern pathogen suppression across these habitats. METHODS: Rhizoplane fungal communities from healthy and diseased plants in endemic wetlands and non-endemic uplands were profiled using Internal Transcribed Spacer ampl

Real-time analytical insights for disease surveillance and response during the severe drought and food security crisis, Somalia 2022-2023.

BACKGROUND: Decades of conflict, epidemics, and climatic shocks have severely weakened Somalia's health system. The failure of five consecutive rainy seasons in 2022-2023 led to the longest and most severe drought in recent history, resulting in an unprecedented nutrition and food security crisis. These conditions have heightened the risk of disease epidemics, particularly cholera and measles. To assess the effect of interventions on disease transmission in real time, make short-term projections of disease incidence, and inform response efforts, the World Health Organization Somalia Country Of

Extreme precipitation amplified the cumulative effects of DOM availability on organic-sourced DIC in the Yangtze River.

Frequent extreme climate events are restructuring riverine carbon cycles dominated by dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC). However, the variability of dissolved organic matter (DOM) induced by rainstorm and its linkage to riverine DIC dynamics remain unclear, limiting an in-depth understanding of carbon transport and fate across the river-ocean continuum. This study employed Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS) coupled with stable carbon and water isotope tracing techniques to investigate DOM-DIC interactions in the Yangtze River. Results demonstrated that organ

Improving risk analysis of the environmental drivers of the spillover, emergence/re-emergence and spread of Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever virus, Marburg virus and Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus in the East Africa Region.

INTRODUCTION: Emerging and/or re-emerging infectious diseases (EIDs) in the East Africa region are associated with climate change-induced environmental drivers. There is a need for a comprehensive understanding of these environmental drivers and to adopt an integrated risk analysis (IRA) framework for addressing a combination of the biological, environmental and socioeconomic factors that increase population vulnerabilities to EID risks to inform biological risk mitigation and cross-sectoral decision-making. The aim of this integrative review was to identify knowledge gaps and contribute to a

Predictors of fuel poverty and the equity of local fuel poverty support: secondary analysis of data from Bradford, England.

AIMS: Addressing fuel poverty is a critical public health issue given its recent rise in prevalence across Europe. Although previous research identifies national risk markers of fuel poverty, evidence is lacking on whether these are consistent across local geographies, and the equity of local interventions. In the UK's current economic climate, it is more crucial than ever that services benefit households in greatest need. This study aimed to determine significant predictors of fuel poverty among households in Bradford, England, comparing them to national-level predictors, and evaluate if hous
