A high-resolution GIS and machine learning approach for targeted disease management and localized risk assessment in an urban setup: A case study from Bhopal, Central India.

Predicting dengue distribution based on environmental factors is crucial for effective vector control and management as environmental factors like temperature, demographics, and artificial changes such as roads and buildings significantly influence dengue distribution. The use of new, emerging machine-learning techniques can aid in accurately predicting these cases and developing early warning systems. In this study, we divided our study area, Bhopal city, into 643 polygons of one square kilometre area and collected data on environmental and other factors. Dengue cases from 2012 to 2022 were m

Correlation Between CT Density, Incidence, Mortality, and Mortality-to-Incidence Ratio in Central Nervous System Cancers: An Exploratory Analysis of Global Data.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Cancers of the central nervous system (CNS) pose a significant burden, despite their relatively low incidence compared to other types of cancers. The mortality-to-incidence ratio (MIR) is a crucial indicator of long-term survival and healthcare system performance. Computed tomography (CT) plays a crucial role in the screening, diagnosis, and monitoring of brain tumors, enabling early intervention and treatment. This study aimed to explore the relationship between CT density, CNS cancer incidence, mortality, and MIR to investigate regional variations in CT utilization and their

Lupus mesenteric vasculitis with gastrointestinal bleeding as the primary manifestation: a case report.

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a complex autoimmune disease where the body loses tolerance to its own antigens, particularly nuclear antigens. Abnormal responses from T and B cells lead to the production of autoantibodies and the formation of immune complexes in tissues, triggering complement activation, inflammation, and irreversible organ damage. SLE can affect any part of the body, resulting in diverse clinical symptoms. One rare manifestation of SLE is lupus mesenteric vasculitis (LMV), which presents with vague symptoms, abnormal laboratory findings, and specific imaging features.

Recent innovations in the screening and diagnosis of systemic sclerosis-associated interstitial lung disease.

INTRODUCTION: Interstitial lung disease (ILD) is the leading cause of mortality in patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc). Risk of developing progressive ILD is highest among patients with diffuse cutaneous disease, positive anti-topoisomerase I antibody, and elevated acute phase reactants. With the FDA approval of two medications and a pipeline of novel therapeutics in trials, early recognition and intervention is critical. High-resolution computed tomography of the chest is the current gold standard test for diagnosis of ILD. Yet, it is not offered as a screening tool to all patients due to

In Silico Prediction of Pharmacokinetic Profile for Human Oral Drug Candidates Which Lack Clinical Pharmacokinetic Experiment Data.

BACKGROUNDS AND OBJECTIVES: In silico methods which can generate high-quality physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) models for arbitrary drug candidates are greatly needed to select developable drug candidates that escape drug attrition because of the poor pharmacokinetic profile. The purpose of this study is to develop a novel protocol to preliminarily predict the concentration profile of a target drug based on the PBPK model of a structurally similar template drug by combining two software platforms for PBPK modeling, the SimCYP simulator and ADMET Predictor. METHODS: The method was

Automated detection of enteric tubes misplaced in the respiratory tract on chest radiographs using deep learning with two centre validation.

AIM: To develop and test a model based on a convolutional neural network that can identify enteric tube position accurately on chest radiography. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The chest radiographs of adult patients were classified by radiologists based on enteric tube position as either critically misplaced (within the respiratory tract) or not critically misplaced (misplaced within the oesophagus or safely positioned below the diaphragm). A deep-learning model based on the 121-layer DenseNet architecture was developed using a training and validation set of 4,693 chest radiographs. The model was ev

Associations of Monocyte Count and Other Immune Cell Types with Interstitial Lung Abnormalities.

Rationale: Higher blood monocyte counts are associated with worse survival in adults with clinically diagnosed pulmonary fibrosis. Their association with the development and progression of interstitial lung abnormalities (ILA) in humans is unknown. Objectives: We evaluated the associations of blood monocyte count, and other immune cell types, with ILA, high-attenuation areas, and FVC in four independent cohorts. Methods: We included participants with measured monocyte counts and computed tomographic (CT) imaging enrolled in MESA (Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis, n = 484), AGES-Reykjavik

Viewpoint: a multidisciplinary approach to the assessment of patients with systemic sclerosis-associated interstitial lung disease.

Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is a rare and heterogeneous disease affecting the skin and internal organs. SSc-associated ILD (SSc-ILD) is a common and often early manifestation of SSc. This article discusses the rationale for a multidisciplinary approach (MDA) to the early identification and assessment of patients with SSc-ILD. Diagnosis of SSc-ILD is often challenging as patients with early disease can be asymptomatic, and SSc-ILD symptoms, such as exertional dyspnea and cough, are non-specific. High-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) of the lungs is the gold standard for diagnosis of SSc-ILD s

[Postoperative imaging of the musculoskeletal system - spine].

Imaging of the postoperative spine intends to answer two main questions: It is used to assess the surgical success and to identify complications. To this end, conventional X‑ray, computer tomography (CT), myelography, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are available. The radiologist has to select the appropriate modality for sufficient diagnosis considering the preoperative situation, the performed operation, and existing postoperative symptoms. Particularly, the implantation of foreign material represents a technical challenge in the context of image acquisition. In the radiologist's report

Evaluation of Genes and Molecular Pathways Involved in the Progression of Monoclonal Gammopathy of Undetermined Significance (MGUS) to Multiple Myeloma: A Systems Biology Approach.

Today, Monoclonal Gammopathy of Undetermined Significance (MGUS) is known as a plasma cell malignancy susceptible to evolving into the life-threatening stage, multiple myeloma (MM), without prominent clinical manifestations. Despite the discovery of advanced therapies and multiple pathogenic markers, the complexity of MM development has made it an incurable malignancy. In this study, the microarray dataset was downloaded from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database and analyzed using the LIMMA package of R-software to determine differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in MGUS and MM compared t

Self-organization of conducting pathways explains electrical wave propagation in cardiac tissues with high fraction of non-conducting cells.

Cardiac fibrosis occurs in many forms of heart disease and is considered to be one of the main arrhythmogenic factors. Regions with a high density of fibroblasts are likely to cause blocks of wave propagation that give rise to dangerous cardiac arrhythmias. Therefore, studies of the wave propagation through these regions are very important, yet the precise mechanisms leading to arrhythmia formation in fibrotic cardiac tissue remain poorly understood. Particularly, it is not clear how wave propagation is organized at the cellular level, as experiments show that the regions with a high percentag

Novel Imaging Approaches in Systemic Sclerosis-Associated Interstitial Lung Disease.

PURPOSE OF THE REVIEW: Novel imaging approaches, such as quantitative computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and molecular imaging, are being applied to interstitial lung diseases to provide prognostic, functional, and molecular information. Here, we review such imaging approaches and their applicability to systemic sclerosis-associated interstitial lung disease (SSc-ILD). RECENT FINDINGS: Quantitative CT can be used to quantify the radiographic response to SSc-ILD therapy. Due to advances in MRI sequence development, MRI can detect the presence of SSc-ILD with high accur

An Implementation and Visualization of the Tree-Based Scan Statistic for Safety Event Monitoring in Longitudinal Electronic Health Data.

INTRODUCTION: Longitudinal electronic healthcare data hold great potential for drug safety surveillance. The tree-based scan statistic (TBSS), as implemented by the TreeScan® software, allows for hypothesis-free signal detection in longitudinal data by grouping safety events according to branching, hierarchical data coding systems, and then identifying signals of disproportionate recording (SDRs) among the singular events or event groups. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this analysis was to identify and visualize SDRs with the TBSS in historical data from patients using two antifungal drugs, itra

[Bronchiectasis imaging].

Bronchiectasis are defined as an irreversible focal or diffuse dilatation of the bronchi and can be associated with significant morbidity. The prevalence is currently increasing, probably due to an increased use of thoracic computed tomography (CT). Indeed, the diagnosis relies on imaging and chest CT is the gold standard technique. The main diagnosis criterion is an increased bronchial diameter as compared to that of the companion artery. However, false positives are possible when the artery diameter is decreased, which is called pseudo-bronchiectasis. Other features such as the lack of bronc

Influence of bronchial diameter change on the airflow dynamics based on a pressure-controlled ventilation system.

Bronchial diameter is a key parameter that affects the respiratory treatment of mechanically ventilated patients. In this paper, to reveal the influence of bronchial diameter on the airflow dynamics of pressure-controlled mechanically ventilated patients, a new respiratory system model is presented that combines multigeneration airways with lungs. Furthermore, experiments and simulation studies to verify the model are performed. Finally, through the simulation study, it can be determined that in airway generations 2 to 7, when the diameter is reduced to half of the original value, the maximum
