Automated generation of structured breast ultrasound reports using BreastViT and ChatGPT.

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer is the most common malignancy in women. Ultrasound plays a critical role in dense breasts, and BI-RADS provides a standardized framework for lesion assessment. However, conventional reports may suffer from variability. Deep learning and large language models (LLMs) show promise in automated report generation. We propose a workflow integrating deep learning with GPT-4o for structured breast ultrasound reports. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively collected 2,243 ultrasound images from 362 patients (BI-RADS 4B, 4C, 5; 2019-2024). The proposed BreastViT model, a Vi

Radar HRV Monitoring With Physiological Prior Inspired Deep Neural Networks.

Radar sensing has emerged as a promising solution for the contactless monitoring of Heart Rate Variability (HRV), a crucial indicator of the cardiovascular and autonomic nervous systems. However, due to signal noise and interference that easily obscure heartbeat details, along with variations in heartbeat across different physiological conditions, existing methods remain restricted to laboratory settings with healthy subjects and fail in real-world scenarios involving more complex physiological conditions. In this study, we propose a physiological prior-inspired deep learning framework for rob

Machine learning prediction of PICC-associated thrombotic complications in critically ill patients.

BACKGROUND: Peripherally inserted central catheters (PICCs) are widely used vascular access devices in intensive care, yet thrombotic complications remain a significant clinical concern. Traditional risk assessment tools fail to capture the complex, non-linear interactions among thrombosis risk factors in critically ill patients. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study, conducted in adherence to TRIPOD + AI guidelines, developed and compared five machine learning models for predicting PICC-associated thrombotic complications using data from the Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care IV

Risk prediction of sepsis-associated acute kidney injury: development, validation of a machine learning model with multicenter data.

BACKGROUND: Sepsis-associated acute kidney injury (SA-AKI) is a common and severe complication in intensive care unit (ICU) patients, with high incidence and mortality. Conventional diagnostic indicators, such as serum creatinine and urine output, have limitations in early identification. Existing machine learning (ML)-based prediction models are mostly single-center and lack interpretability, highlighting the clinical need for reliable and applicable early prediction tools. METHODS: Data were collected from the Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care IV (MIMIC-IV), eICU Collaborative Res

Dynamic Bayesian networks to predict loss of kidney function: a cross-institution use case in a large cohort with or at-risk of CKD.

BACKGROUND: Substantial loss of kidney function, measured as ≥40% decline in estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) within a 2-year period, is associated with a tenfold increase in the risk for kidney failure. METHODS: We developed and externally validated dynamic Bayesian networks (DBNs) to predict ≥ 40% eGFR decline using electronic health record (EHR) data from Providence and UCLA Health. RESULTS: Of 2.25 million patients, with and at-risk for chronic kidney disease (CKD), 6.49% (146,043 individuals) experienced at least one occurrence of ≥40% decline from baseline eGFR over six year

Incomplete Multi-View Data Learning via Adaptive Embedding and Partial l2,1 Norm Constraints for Parkinson's Disease Diagnosis.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by mental abnormalities and motor dysfunction. Its early classification and prediction of clinical scores have been major concerns for researchers. Currently, multi-view data learning has become an essential research area due to the capacity of multiple views to provide complementary insights from various perspectives. However, the discontinuous distribution, data missing complexity, small sample size, and redundant features in multi-view datasets pose a substantial obstacle, and most existing multi-view learnin

A Feature Fusion Attention-Based Deep Learning Algorithm for Mammographic Architectural Distortion Classification.

Architectural Distortion (AD) is a common abnormality in digital mammograms, alongside masses and microcalcifications. Detecting AD in dense breast tissue is particularly challenging due to its heterogeneous asymmetries and subtle presentation. Factors such as location, size, shape, texture, and variability in patterns contribute to reduced sensitivity. To address these challenges, we propose a novel feature fusion-based Vision Transformer (ViT) attention network, combined with VGG-16, to improve accuracy and efficiency in AD detection. Our approach mitigates issues related to texture fixation

Domain Adaptation for IMU Data to Enhance Objective Assessment of Friedreich Ataxia.

Friedreich Ataxia (FRDA) is an uncommon progressive neurodegenerative disorder of the nervous system that primarily affects motor coordination. Measuring disease severity is crucial, as it allows clinicians to monitor disease progression and make appropriate treatment decisions. By using inertial measurement units (IMUs) to capture the motion of individuals with FRDA, it has been possible to develop algorithms that objectively assess motor impairment. These studies have primarily employed conventional machine learning (ML) methods but have been limited by small datasets, which is an inherent c

Graph representation and learning for drug administration prediction.

BACKGROUND: The management of drug administration to patients promotes the customisation and accuracy of the treatments, reducing the risk of ineffective therapies and negative drug effects, and improving drug efficiency and management. METHODS: We propose a graph representation learning model for predicting drug administration using the MIMIC-III database, which contains over 53K critical care admissions. We design a heterogeneous, weighted, directed, and multi-feature graph from patient demographics, diagnoses, and drug administration records. Our method uses a graph convolutional network t

A Multi-Scale Hybrid Efficient Deep Learning Model for COPD Detection Using Respiratory Sounds.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a prevalent respiratory disease, and early diagnosis is crucial for timely intervention and improved prognosis. Respiratory sound analysis, with its non-invasive nature and ability to reflect airway pathology, shows great potential as an auxiliary diagnostic tool. However, existing methods often focus on detecting specific abnormal sounds, such as wheezing and crackling, rather than diagnosing diseases directly, Additionally, most approaches rely on single features or architectures, which limits diagnostic accuracy. To address these issues, this

EEG-X: An Integrated Framework for Automated Quantitative EEG Analysis in Epilepsy Diagnosis.

Accurate interpretation of electroencephalography (EEG) remains a major challenge in epilepsy diagnosis, particularly given that patient heterogeneity hinders the cross-subject generalization of artificial intelligence based algorithms. To address the complex spatio-temporal characteristics and long-range contextual dependencies of EEG signals, we propose a novel EEG decoding frame work. The framework employs a graph convolutional neural network to capture the spatial dependencies across EEG channels, integrated with a multiresolution transformer block to capture short-term dynamics while pres

A novel algorithm for the continuous determination of individualized intracranial pressure (iICP) thresholds using a multi-window weighted approach.

BACKGROUND: Individualized intracranial pressure (iICP) thresholds, defined as the function intersectionality between intracranial pressure (ICP) and cerebrovascular reactivity (CVR), represent a promising potential approach to personalized medicine in neurocritical care. However, current iICP derivation methods fail to account for the variable quality of iICP estimates and rely on entire recording periods, limiting their use to retrospective, post-hoc calculations and thereby limiting clinical applicability. Therefore, the goal of this study was to develop an automated, continuous iICP deriva

Marfan Syndrome Prediction Via Graph Neural Networks on 3D Facial Cues.

Marfan syndrome (MFS) is a rare genetic connective tissue disorder whose early detection is critical to prevent life-threatening cardiovascular complications. To support the diagnostic process, which currently relies on complex and costly clinical assessments and genetic testing, we propose a 3D vision-based method for rapid, non-invasive screening for MFS using facial scans. The method analyzes 3D facial morphology using Graph Neural Networks on either manually or automatically extracted landmarks, leveraging geometric relationships to capture subtle craniofacial patterns and a statistically

Automated Screening Network for Fetal Closed Spina Bifida With Semantic Enhancement and Projected Attention.

Closed spina bifida is a high-incidence developmental disorder among rare fetal diseases. Its signs in ultrasound imaging are subtle, making it prone to misdiagnosis and heavily reliant on sonographers' experience. Therefore, we propose a novel semantic enhancement framework incorporating projected attention for the automated screening of closed spina bifida through precise landmark detection. In this method, we utilize a multi-granularity deep supervision and voting mechanism to generate point-specific features and reconstruct saliency maps for each landmark, effectively reducing interference

CS-Net: Bridging Local and Temporal Features for Chromosomal Structural Abnormality Detection.

Chromosomal structural abnormality detection is pivotal for diagnosing genetic disorders and advancing biomedical research. Existing methods primarily focus on instance-level features, making them suboptimal for identifying subtle structural abnormalities that manifest as localized banding pattern changes in chromosome images. Moreover, these methods overlook the temporal relationships inherent in chromosomes, which are critical for reasoning about structural abnormalities. These challenges are further compounded by the high appearance similarity among chromosomes, where traditional approaches

Non-contact Heart Sound Measurement by Defocused Speckle Imaging.

Phonocardiogram (PCG) is a graphical representation of heart sounds and murmurs, playing a vital role in the early screening and prevention of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). In this study, we propose a first camera-stethoscope that is capable of recording PCG contactlessly, enabled by the principle of defocused speckle imaging (DSI). By illuminating the chest surface adjacent to the heart with a laser beam and employing a defocused camera to capture the reflected laser speckle interference, the subtle cardiac vibrations involved in heart sound generation are magnified and measured. By adjusti
