Clinical and Genetic Characterization of Patients with Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia in Southwest Saudi Arabia: A Cross Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD, MIM 244400) is an inherited ciliopathy disorder characterized by recurrent sinopulmonary infections, subfertility, and laterality defects. The true incidence of PCD in Saudi Arabia is not known, but it is likely underdiagnosed due to the high prevalence of consanguineous marriages. In this study, we aim to study the clinical and genetic characteristics of PCD patients in the southwestern region of Saudi Arabia to provide guidance to clinicians and researchers studying PCD. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study conducted between 2019 and 2023 in…

[Population genetics and etho-historical considerations of the uniqueness of the Prasun Kafirs and the Kalash (central Hindu Kush) with regard to the ABO blood group system].

An attempt has been made to interpret the quite rare distribution pattern of ABO blood group genes (p > 0.5000, q < 0.1000 and r < 0.5000) among the Prasun Kafirs and the Kalsh of the central Hindu Kush from the point of view of population genetics and ethnohistory. If we consider the different age groups of the Prasun sample it will be observed that there is a marked increase in the frequency of blood group gene A and a corresponding decrease in blood group gene O as we proceed from older to younger age groups. These changes cna be readily explained on the basis of a prenatal selection throug

Cost-financed mental health facility. II. Utilization profile of a labor union program.

Specific data are presened concerning the utilization profile of a cost-financed mental health facility. The utilization is enhanced by a mental health education campaign, but total utilization remains within manageable limits (13 per 1000). The visit rate is 8.5 units per patient and remains well within the plan's dollar limits. Comparison between utilizers and the population from which they are drawn shows disproportionate numbers of males in contrast to other outpatient insurance studies. This may be a unique feature of work-related programs. "Acting out" disorders are more common among the

[Impact of demographic and psychosocial factors on adherence to antiretroviral treatment].

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Antiretroviral efficacy is closely related to the degree of adherence. The aim of this study is to assess the association between psychosocial and demographic variables and adherence to antiretroviral treatment. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional survey of 320 patients under antiretroviral treatment was conducted in four Andalusian hospitals, using a semi-structured questionnaire given by health care professionals. RESULTS: Median age was 39.7 years. Nearly 12% of the sample was considered non-compliant to antiretroviral treatment. An interaction was observed b

Stress sensitization and adolescent depressive severity as a function of childhood adversity: a link to anxiety disorders.

The goal of the present study was to determine whether exposure to adversity in childhood contributes to a differential threshold at which stressful life events provoke depressive reactions in adolescence. In addition, to address empirical and conceptual questions about stress effects, the moderating effect of anxiety disorder history was also explored. This examination was conducted in a sample of 816 children of depressed and nondepressed mothers, who were followed from birth to age 15. Information on adversities experienced in childhood was collected both from mothers during the first five

Early traumatic life events, parental attitudes, family history, and birth risk factors in patients with borderline personality disorder and healthy controls.

Patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD) were compared with a healthy control group with regard to traumatic life events during childhood. The patients (n=66) and controls (n=109) were investigated using a comprehensive retrospective interview with 203 questions about childhood traumatic life events, parental attitudes, family history of psychiatric disorders and birth risk factors. The frequency of reports of traumatic childhood experiences was significantly higher in patients than in controls, including sexual abuse, violence, separation from parents, childhood illness, and other

Psychiatric disorders. A rural/urban comparison.

We studied rural/urban differences in the prevalence of nine psychiatric disorders from a community survey (part of the Epidemiologic Catchment Area Program) of 3,921 adults living in the Piedmont of North Carolina. Crude comparisons disclosed that major depressive episodes and drug abuse and/or dependence were more common in the urban area, whereas alcohol abuse/dependence was more common in the rural area. When prevalence for these disorders was stratified for age, sex, race, and education (factors that may confound urban/rural comparisons), a number of significant differences were identifie
