A retinal detachment based strabismus detection through FEDCNN.

Ocular strabismus, a common condition in the present generation is an absolute risk factor for amblyopia and blinding premorbid visual loss. Despite the availability of new optometry tools with eye-tracking data, the issues persist in attaining accuracy and reliability in diagnosing strabismus. These two concerns are specifically accommodated in this study by the proposed novel approach that involves CNNs with eye-tracking datasets from subjects. The presented work aims to improve the accuracy of diagnostics in ophthalmology utilizing the integration of the further proposed algorithms into an

Comorbidity-based framework for Alzheimer's disease classification using graph neural networks.

Alzheimer's disease (AD), the most prevalent form of dementia, requires early prediction for timely intervention. Current deep learning approaches, particularly those using traditional neural networks, face challenges such as handling high-dimensional data, interpreting complex relationships, and managing data bias. To address these limitations, we propose a framework utilizing graph neural networks (GNNs), which excel in modeling relationships within graph-structured data. Our study employs GNNs on data from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative for binary and multi-class classifica

Application of Hybrid DeepLearning Architectures for Identification of Individuals with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder Based on EEG Data.

Objective: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a highly common psychiatric disorder. The symptoms of this condition overlap and co-occur with those of other psychiatric illnesses, making diagnosis difficult. The availability of biomarkers could be useful for aiding in diagnosis, although prior neuroimaging studies were unable to provide such biomarkers. Method: In this study, patients with OCD were classified from healthy controls using 2 different hybrid deep learning models: one-dimensional convolutional neural networks (1DCNN) together with long-short term memory (LSTM) and gradient recu

Intelligent prediction of Alzheimer's disease via improved multifeature squeeze-and-excitation-dilated residual network.

This study aimed to address the issue of larger prediction errors existing in intelligent predictive tasks related to Alzheimer's disease (AD). A cohort of 487 enrolled participants was categorized into three groups: normal control (138 individuals), mild cognitive impairment (238 patients), and AD (111 patients) in this study. An improved multifeature squeeze-and-excitation-dilated residual network (MFSE-DRN) was proposed for two important AD predictions: clinical scores and conversion probability. The model was characterized as three modules: squeeze-and-excitation-dilated residual block (SE

Biodegradation of ciprofloxacin using machine learning tools: Kinetics and modelling.

Recently, the rampant administration of antibiotics and their synthetic organic constitutes have exacerbated adverse effects on ecosystems, affecting the health of animals, plants, and humans by promoting the emergence of extreme multidrug-resistant bacteria (XDR), antibiotic resistance bacterial variants (ARB), and genes (ARGs). The constraints, such as high costs, by-product formation, etc., associated with the physico-chemical treatment process limit their efficacy in achieving efficient wastewater remediation. Biodegradation is a cost-effective, energy-saving, sustainable alternative for r

Artificial intelligence aided serum protein electrophoresis analysis of Finnish patient samples: Retrospective validation.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Serum protein electrophoresis interpretation requires a substantial amount of manual work. In 2020, Chabrun et al. created a machine learning method called SPECTR for the task. We aimed to validate and test the SPECTR method against our results of more precise immunofixation electrophoresis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We gathered 34 625 patients and their first serum protein electrophoresis sample in Helsinki University Hospital. We trained three neural network models: (1) a fractionation model to fractionate electropherograms; (2) a classification model to classify samples t

Optimizing removal of antiretroviral drugs from tertiary wastewater using chlorination and AI-based prediction with response surface methodology.

Chemical and pharmaceutical chemicals found in water sources create substantial risks to human health and the environment. The presence of pharmaceutical contaminants in water can cause antibiotic resistance development, toxicity to aquatic organisms, and endocrine disruption. Hence, the elimination of chemicals and other contaminants from wastewater prior to its release is a burgeoning concern in the domains of engineering and science. The use of treatment technologies in wastewater treatment plants can remove pharmaceutical contaminants through the oxidation process. However, many traditiona

Efficient value synthesis in the orbitofrontal cortex explains how loss aversion adapts to the ranges of gain and loss prospects.

Is irrational behavior the incidental outcome of biological constraints imposed on neural information processing? In this work, we consider the paradigmatic case of gamble decisions, where gamble values integrate prospective gains and losses. Under the assumption that neurons have a limited firing response range, we show that mitigating the ensuing information loss within artificial neural networks that synthetize value involves a specific form of self-organized plasticity. We demonstrate that the ensuing efficient value synthesis mechanism induces value range adaptation. We also reveal how th

Deep learning approach for dysphagia detection by syllable-based speech analysis with daily conversations.

Dysphagia, a disorder affecting the ability to swallow, has a high prevalence among the older adults and can lead to serious health complications. Therefore, early detection of dysphagia is important. This study evaluated the effectiveness of a newly developed deep learning model that analyzes syllable-segmented data for diagnosing dysphagia, an aspect not addressed in prior studies. The audio data of daily conversations were collected from 16 patients with dysphagia and 24 controls. The presence of dysphagia was determined by videofluoroscopic swallowing study. The data were segmented into sy

An object detection-based model for automated screening of stem-cells senescence during drug screening.

Deep learning-based cell senescence detection is crucial for accurate quantitative analysis of senescence assessment. However, senescent cells are small in size and have little differences in appearance and shape in different states, which leads to insensitivity problems such as missed and false detection. In addition, complex intelligent models are not conducive to clinical application. Therefore, to solve the above problems, we proposed a Faster Region Convolutional Neural Network (Faster R-CNN) detection model with Swin Transformer (Swin-T) and group normalization (GN), called STGF R-CNN, f

Evaluation of an artificial intelligence-facilitated sperm detection tool in azoospermic samples for use in ICSI.

RESEARCH QUESTION: Can artificial intelligence (AI) improve the efficiency and efficacy of sperm searches in azoospermic samples? DESIGN: This two-phase proof-of-concept study began with a training phase using eight azoospermic patients (>10,000 sperm images) to provide a variety of surgically collected samples for sperm morphology and debris variation to train a convolutional neural network to identify spermatozoa. Second, side-by-side testing was undertaken on two cohorts of non-obstructive azoospermia patient samples: an embryologist versus the AI identifying all the spermatozoa in the sti

Comparison and analysis of deep learning models for discriminating longitudinal and oblique vaginal septa based on ultrasound imaging.

BACKGROUND: The longitudinal vaginal septum and oblique vaginal septum are female müllerian duct anomalies that are relatively less diagnosed but severely fertility-threatening in clinical practice. Ultrasound imaging is commonly used to examine the two vaginal malformations, but in fact it's difficult to make an accurate differential diagnosis. This study is intended to assess the performance of multiple deep learning models based on ultrasonographic images for distinguishing longitudinal vaginal septum and oblique vaginal septum. METHODS: The cases and ultrasound images of longitudinal vagi

The value of linear and non-linear quantitative EEG analysis in paediatric epilepsy surgery: a machine learning approach.

Epilepsy surgery is effective for patients with medication-resistant seizures, however 20-40% of them are not seizure free after surgery. Aim of this study is to evaluate the role of linear and non-linear EEG features to predict post-surgical outcome. We included 123 paediatric patients who underwent epilepsy surgery at Bambino Gesù Children Hospital (January 2009-April 2020). All patients had long term video-EEG monitoring. We analysed 1-min scalp interictal EEG (wakefulness and sleep) and extracted 13 linear and non-linear EEG features (power spectral density (PSD), Hjorth, approximate entro

Classification of Motor Imagery Tasks Derived from Unilateral Upper Limb based on a Weight-optimized Learning Model.

BACKGROUND: The accuracy of decoding fine motor imagery (MI) tasks remains relatively low due to the dense distribution of active areas in the cerebral cortex. METHODS: To enhance the decoding of unilateral fine MI activity in the brain, a weight-optimized EEGNet model is introduced that recognizes six types of MI for the right upper limb, namely elbow flexion/extension, wrist pronation/supination and hand opening/grasping. The model is trained with augmented electroencephalography (EEG) data to learn deep features for MI classification. To address the sensitivity issue of the initial model w
