Behavioral Responses to Novelty or to a Predator Stimulus Are Not Altered in Adult Zebrafish by Early Embryonic Alcohol Exposure.

BACKGROUND: Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) may vary in symptoms and severity. In the milder and more prevalent forms of the disease, behavioral abnormalities may include impaired social behavior, for example, difficulty interpreting social cues. Patients with FASD remain often undiagnosed due to lack of biomarkers, and treatment is unavailable because the mechanisms of the disease are not yet understood. Animal models have been proposed to facilitate addressing these problems. More recently, short exposure of the zebrafish embryo to low concentrations of alcohol was shown to lead to s

Hyperactivity: is candy causal?

Adverse behavioral responses to ingestion of any kind of candy have been reported repeatedly in the lay press. Parents and teachers alike attribute excessive motor activity and other disruptive behaviors to candy consumption. However, anecdotal observations of this kind need to be tested scientifically before conclusions can be drawn, and criteria for interpreting diet behavior studies must be rigorous. Ingredients in nonchocolate candy (sugar, artificial food colors), components in chocolate candy (sugar, artificial food colors in coatings, caffeine), and chocolate itself have been investigat

An unhealthy lifestyle and incident activity-limiting neck and back problems in university students: the Sustainable UNiversity Life (SUN) study.

BACKGROUND: Neck and back pain are common musculoskeletal conditions in university students and associated with unhealthy lifestyle behaviors such as physical inactivity, unhealthy dietary habits, smoking and risky alcohol use. Cohort studies have investigated the effect of a healthy lifestyle including several lifestyle behaviors on the risk and prognosis for neck and back pain. Studies of an association between an unhealthy lifestyle and musculoskeletal conditions in university students are lacking. This study aimed to assess the association between an unhealthy lifestyle and incident activi

Prenatal exposure to organophosphate ester flame retardants and behavioral outcomes in early childhood in the Environmental influences on Child Health Outcomes (ECHO) cohort.

BACKGROUND: Prenatal exposure to organophosphate esters (OPEs) has been linked to neurotoxic effects in children; however, epidemiological evidence remains inconclusive. We investigated associations of prenatal OPE exposure with child behaviors. METHODS: We analyzed data of 2948 mother-child dyads from 12 prospective cohorts of the Environmental influences on Child Health Outcomes (ECHO) Cohort. Nine OPE biomarkers quantified in prenatal maternal urine were modeled based on detection frequency. Child behaviors were assessed using the Child Behavior Checklist for Ages 1½-5. We used linear mixe

Bridging the gap between mental and physical health: a multidisciplinary approach.

People with serious mental illnesses have higher rates of morbidity and premature mortality compared with the general population. This population loses from 13 to over 20 years of life compared with their nonpsychiatric cohorts. A multitude of factors contribute to this silent tragedy. A major problem is that multiple barriers exist, making it difficult for individuals with serious mental illness to access quality health care. Additionally, compared with the average American, people with serious mental illness are more likely to engage in unhealthy lifestyle practices, such as lack of regular

Diagnostic reframing of intractable environmental problems: case of a contested multiparty public land-use conflict.

Intractable conflicts are omnipresent in environmental management. These conflicts do not necessarily resist resolution but need to be fundamentally transformed in order to reach agreement. Reframing, a process that allows disputants to create new alternative understandings of the problem, is one way of transforming these conflicts. Cognitive and interactional reframing are the two major approaches to conflict transformation. These approaches have some drawbacks. Cognitive reframing does not guarantee commensurate consideration of all disputants' views about the problem. Interactional reframin

When Being Bad Feels Good: A Systematic Review of the Relationship Between Positive Emotion and Antisocial Behavior in Children and Adolescents.

Antisocial behavior in childhood and adolescence is associated with poor family and peer relationships, and a higher risk of mental and physical health problems in adulthood, as well as criminality. Emotions play a central role in children's moral development, but most research has focused on negative emotions (e.g., shame and guilt), in relation to childhood antisocial behavior. Research in adult populations indicates that positive emotions experienced in anticipation of, during, and after antisocial acts may play an important role in the development and maintenance of antisocial behavior. Association of gestational weight gain rate in pregnant women with children's cognitive and behavioral development: A birth cohort study.

BACKGROUND: The evidences on the relationship between gestational weight gain rate (GWGR) and children's cognitive and behavioral development have been limited. METHODS: A total of 3273 singleton live birth mother-child pairs from the Ma'anshan Birth Cohort in China were included in the study. Maternal GWGR was calculated based on the weights measured at multiple antenatal checkups. Children's cognitive and behavioral development were assessed by Chinese version of Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence-Fourth Edition and Achenbach Child Behavior Checklist 1.5-5. [As early as birth, oxytocin plays a key role in both food and social behavior].

Oxytocin (OT) is a neurohormone that regulates the so-called "social brain" and is mainly studied in adulthood. During postnatal development, the mechanisms by which the OT system structures various behaviors are little studied. Here we present the dynamic process of postnatal development of the OT system as well as the OT functions in the perinatal period that are essential for shaping social behaviors. Specifically, we discuss the role of OT, in the newborn, in integrating and adapting responses to early sensory stimuli and in stimulating suckling activity. Sensory dialogue and suckling are

School Refusal Behavior and Aggression in Spanish Adolescents.

In order to reduce school attendance problems and aggressive behavior, it is essential to determine the relationship between both variables. The aim of this study was twofold: (1) to examine the mean differences in scores on aggression, based on school refusal behavior, and (2) to analyze the predictive capacity of high scores on aggression, based on school refusal behavior factors. The sample consisted of 1455 Spanish secondary school students, aged 13-17 (M = 14.85; SD = 1.56). The School Refusal Assessment Scale-Revised (I. Avoidance of negative affectivity, II. Evaluation of Improvement in Externalizing Behaviors and Callous-Unemotional Traits in Children with Disruptive Behavior Disorder: A 1-Year Follow Up Clinic-Based Study.

Multi-component interventions based on cognitive behavioral principles and practices have been found effective in reducing behavioral problems in children with disruptive behavior disorders (oppositional defiant disorder and conduct disorder). However, it is still unclear if these interventions can affect children's callous-unemotional traits, which are predictive of subsequent antisocial behavior. Furthermore, it could be important to identify empirically supported treatment protocols for specific disorders addressed by child mental health services. The present study aimed to test the followi

The interference effect in arithmetic fact solving: An fMRI study.

Some multiplication facts share common digits with other, previously learned facts, and as a result, different problems are associated with different levels of interference. The detrimental effect of interference in arithmetic facts knowledge has been recently highlighted in behavioral studies, in children as well as in adults, both in typical and atypical development. The present study investigated the brain regions involved in the interference effect when solving multiplication problems. Twenty healthy adults carried out a multiplication task in an MRI scanner. The event-related design compr

Optimization of carbon capture and storage transportation networks in Thailand using the artificial hummingbird algorithm.

Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) is increasingly recognized as a vital technology for mitigating carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by capturing CO2 and storing it deep underground, thereby preventing its release into the atmosphere. Effective deployment of CCS projects requires the optimal matching of CO2 emission sources with storage sinks, as well as efficient routing through onshore and offshore transportation networks. This research focuses specifically on truck-based transportation, a practical and flexible delivery mode given the current infrastructure conditions in Thailand. The optimizati

On the design of sustainable antifouling system for the crossflow filtration of oily water systems: A multicontinuum and CFD investigation of the periodic feed pressure technique.

The problem of fouling is considered a major reason for deteriorating the performance of porous membranes. Even though the accumulations of materials at the membrane surface are inevitable, efforts are continuously spent to minimize their drawbacks. Several techniques have been tested to minimize the problem of fouling. Some of these methods, however, confront some technical difficulties that make their use unfeasible. For example, in polymeric-type membranes, back flushing may result in the loss of bonding between the active and the support layers resulting thereby to the disintegration of th

Discriminative imaging of maternal and fetal blood flow within the placenta using ultrafast ultrasound.

Being able to map accurately placental blood flow in clinics could have major implications in the diagnosis and follow-up of pregnancy complications such as intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR). Moreover, the impact of such an imaging modality for a better diagnosis of placental dysfunction would require to solve the unsolved problem of discriminating the strongly intricated maternal and fetal vascular networks. However, no current imaging modality allows both to achieve sufficient sensitivity and selectivity to tell these entangled flows apart. Although ultrasound imaging would be the clini

The nonlinear characteristics of soft gels and hydrated connective tissues in ultrafiltration.

A one-dimensional ultrafiltration problem of fluid flow through a soft permeable tissue or gel under high pressure and compressive strain is solved. A finite deformation biphasic theory is used to model the behavior of the soft porous permeable solid matrix. This theory includes a Helmholtz free energy function which depends on the three principal invariants (I, II, III) of the right Cauchy-Green tensor and which satisfies the Baker-Ericksen inequalities on the principal stresses and strains. The dependence of the porosity phi f and the solidity phi s on deformation is deduced and a generaliza
