A Literature Review of the Rare Coexistence of Central Giant Cell Granuloma with Aneurysmal Bone Cyst: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Central giant cell granuloma (CGCG) is a benign bone tumor that occurs more in young females and anterior of the mandible. It can be unilocular or multilocular with wispy-septation, undulating borders, cortical expansion, and perforation. Central giant cell granuloma in association with other benign lesions of the jaws is named hybrid lesion. An aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC) is a rare, rapidly growing benign tumor that is commonly developed in young females and the mandible molar and ramus regions. It is usually a well-defined cyst-like expansile lesion with an internal structure si

Three-dimensional anatomy of the Denonvilliers' fascia after micro-CT reconstruction.

An understanding of the anatomy of the Denonvilliers' fascia is essential for successful surgical outcomes for patients with rectal cancer in the mid- to lower regions, especially near the seminal vesicles and prostate in males. Whether the correct surgical plane during a total mesorectal excision should be anterior or posterior to the Denonvilliers' fascia is currently under debate. This study aimed to investigate the Denonvilliers' fascia using micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) to acquire three-dimensional images nondestructively for assessments of the relationship between the Denonvillie

Primary orbital ganglioneuroblastoma in a child: A case report.

RATIONALE: Ganglioneuroblastoma (GNB) is a transitional tumor of sympathetic origin that has never been described as primarily involving the orbit. Herein we report an extremely rare case of GNB with primary orbital involvement and its treatment strategies. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 9-year-old girl presented with progressive and recurring right orbital mass for 2 years. DIAGNOSIS: Computed tomography (CT) showed a well-defined, well-circumscribed, and homogeneous extraconal soft tissue mass occupying most of the right superior orbital area. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed that there was

Frontoethmoidal mucocele causing proptosis and visual loss.

Mucoceles are benign mucus-containing cysts formed due to the obliteration of sinus ostium. They are most commonly found in the frontal sinus. Mucoceles can spread both intraorbitally and intracranially causing complications such as meningitis, brain abscess, and loss of vision. Radiological investigations are required for diagnosis, with both computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) being useful. Surgical approaches for management have changed from external to endonasal these days. We report a case where a 54-year-old patient presented to us with a 14 days' history of los

X-ray Phase Contrast Tomography Serves Preclinical Investigation of Neurodegenerative Diseases.

We report a qualitative study on central nervous system (CNS) damage that demonstrates the ability of X-ray phase contrast tomography (XPCT) to confirm data obtained with standard 2D methodology and permits the description of additional features that are not detected with 2D or other 3D techniques. In contrast to magnetic resonance or computed tomography, XPCT makes possible the high-resolution 3D imaging of soft tissues classically considered "invisible" to X-rays without the use of additional contrast agents, or without the need for intense processing of the tissue required by 2D techniques.

Imprinted Contact Lenses for Ocular Administration of Antiviral Drugs.

A variety of ocular diseases are caused by viruses, and most treatments rely on the use of systemic formulations and eye drops. The efficient ocular barriers that oppose antiviral drug penetration have prompted the development of improved topical delivery platforms. The aim was to design hydrogel contact lenses endowed with an affinity for acyclovir (ACV) and its prodrug valacyclovir (VACV), first-choice drugs against herpes simplex virus (HSV) ocular keratitis, and that can sustain the release of therapeutic doses during daily wearing. Functional monomers suitable for interaction with these d

Ventral scapular osteochondroma excision through 'triangle of auscultation': A case series.

INTRODUCTION: Surgical intervention through the 'triangle of auscultation' is less morbid to patients, as it is devoid of muscles and provides an easy access to tumours arising on the ventral aspect of scapula especially near inferior angle. METHOD: Three patients presented to us with pseudo-winging of scapula and an audible thud on abduction of the arm. A bony mass, painful in two and painless in one patient, was palpable along the anterior aspect of the inferior angle of scapula. A clinical diagnosis of osteochondroma was made which was corroborated by X-rays and computed tomography (CT) im

Using Materialise's interactive medical image control system to reconstruct a model of a patient with rectal cancer and situs inversus totalis: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Situs inversus totalis (SIT) is a rare congenital anomaly that refers to a completely reversed location of abdominal and thoracic organs. An extremely small number of patients with this condition, especially those with rectal neoplasms, have been reported. Surgery in these patients is technically challenging. Therefore, we reconstructed a three-dimensional (3D) digital model with the Materialise's interactive medical image control system (Mimics) as a guide for laparoscopic resection. CASE SUMMARY: We report the case of a 68-year-old woman with rectal neoplasms and SIT diagnosed b

[Special aspects of stress fractures].

BACKGROUND: Stress fractures are very common in clinical practice. They can be classified into fatigue fractures that affect healthy bone and insufficiency fractures in which the bone is already damaged or weakened. IMAGING MODALITIES: Conventional x‑ray images are the standard method in case of a suspected stress fracture. If x‑rays are negative, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can be performed, which has a significantly higher sensitivity and can provide further information such as evidence for a pathological fracture. Computed tomography (CT) is suitable for an exact representation of the

Biomechanical effects of screw orientation and plate profile on tibial condylar valgus osteotomy - Finite-element analysis.

Tibial condylar valgus osteotomy (TCVO) is a type of open wedge high tibial osteotomy for correcting intra-articular deformities of medial knee osteoarthritis. However, there are no implant design and related biomechanical investigations specifically for TCVO. This study aims to investigate the effects of the proximal screw direction and plate profile on the biomechanical behaviors of the TCVO construct. Based on computed tomography images, the tibia model with TCVO was simulated. Four variations (straight and contoured plate profile × convergent and divergent proximal screw direction) with tw

Olfactory Neuroblastoma.

Olfactory neuroblastoma is a rare tumor. Nasal endoscopy typically identifies a soft mass arising from the olfactory cleft. Computer tomography and magnetic resonance imaging are mandatory for staging (in association with 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography) in high-grade and/or high-stage tumors. Biopsy must be representative to confirm a diagnosis and for grading purposes. Two complementary classifications are described: one (Kadish) based on clinical-radiological analysis, and the other (Hyams) on histological criteria. Based on Hyams grading, studies have pointed out that g
