Final report of the early vs. late infantile strabismus surgery study (ELISSS), a controlled, prospective, multicenter study.

BACKGROUND: The optimal age for surgery for infantile esotropia is controversial. Proponents of early surgery believe that further loss of binocular vision can be prevented by early surgery, a minority believes that binocular vision can even be restored by early surgery. The ELISSS compared early with late surgery in a prospective, controlled, non-randomized, multicenter trial. METHODS: Fifty-eight clinics recruited children aged 6-18 months for the study. Each clinic operated all eligible children either 'early', i.e. at age 6-24 months, or 'late', i.e. at age 32-60 months. At baseline the a

Magnetoencephalographic study of occipitotemporal activity elicited by viewing mouth movements.

OBJECTIVE: We studied the temporal and spatial characteristics of neural responses elicited by viewing mouth movements using magnetoencephalography. METHODS: We focused on differences in responses to mouth opening and closing movements by apparent motion, using an averting eyes condition as a control. RESULTS: A large clear MEG component, 1 M (mean peak latency of approximately 160 ms), was elicited by both mouth movements. We modeled the neural sources using a brain electric source analysis (BESA) method and placed the sources around: (1) the occipitotemporal border at human MT/V5, (2) the

Autochronometric abnormalities in patients with cerebral pathology in various locations.

Dysfunction of the limbic structures of the temporal lobe of the brain (predominantly the hippocampus), chiasma, hypothalamus, and epiphysis is accompanied by impairment of internal estimation of time periods. In patients with lesions of the temporal lobes and base of the skull, changes in measures of autochronometry were uniform, were the most marked, and were not directly associated with locomotor parameters or with changes in the general functional state of the CNS. In patients with spinal cord or vertebral lesions, including tumors, and in those with extensive lesions of the frontoparietal

Synchronization of gamma oscillations increases functional connectivity of human hippocampus and inferior-middle temporal cortex during repetitive visuomotor events.

Do recency processes associated with repetitive sensorimotor events modulate the magnitude and functional coupling of brain rhythmicity in human temporal cortex? Intracranial stereo electroencephalographic activity (SEEG; 256 Hz sampling rate) was recorded from hippocampus, and inferior (BA20) and middle (BA21) temporal cortex in four epilepsy patients. The repetitive events were represented by predicted imperative somatosensory stimuli (CNV paradigm) triggering hand movements ("repetitive visuomotor") or counting ("repetitive counting"). The non-repetitive events were "rare" (P3 paradigm) som

The masking level difference in chinchilla auditory cortex. Effects of inner hair cell loss.

The purpose of the present study was to investigate responses from the unanesthetized chinchilla auditory cortex (AC) to conditions producing a masking level difference (MLD) in perceptual studies, both before and after inner hair cell (IHC) loss caused by carboplatin. Tungsten electrodes were chronically implanted in the right AC (active) and anterior cranium (common) in six adult chinchillas. Following a recovery period, AC responses were obtained from the unanesthetized animal placed in a passive restraint. Toneburst input/output functions were obtained. Tonebursts (500 Hz) ranged from 0 to

Crowding effects on word identification in developmental dyslexia.

The effect of crowding on the identification of words was examined in normal readers and subjects with developmental dyslexia. In Experiment 1, a matching task was used. Words were presented either alone or embedded in other words. Vocal reaction times (RT) of dyslexics were slower and more sensitive to the presence of the surrounding stimuli than those of control subjects. Similar results were obtained in a control experiment using the same task for strings of symbols (isolated or crowded) instead of words. These data indicate that differences in crowding in control and dyslexic subjects aris

Activity in ventral and dorsal premotor cortex in response to predictable force-pulse perturbations in a precision grip task.

This study compared the responses of ventral and dorsal premotor cortex (PMv and PMd) neurons to predictable force-pulse perturbations applied during a precision grip. Three monkeys were trained to grasp an unseen instrumented object between the thumb and index finger and to lift and hold it stationary within a position window for 2-2.5 s. The grip and load forces and the object displacement were measured on each trial. Single-unit activity was recorded from the hand regions in the PMv and PMd. In some conditions a predictable perturbation was applied to the object after 1,500 ms of static hol

Asymmetric influences of pointing on saccade latency in hemi-Parkinson's disease.

The objective of this study was to investigate whether eye-hand coupling was preserved or not in PD. We studied predictive saccade performance during hand pointing in six Parkinson's disease (PD) patients with asymmetrical motor signs compared to nine age-matched healthy subjects. The motor responses (saccades and hand pointing) were elicited under open loop conditions (without vision of the hand), by a visual target stepping at a predictable location (10 degrees right and left from the centre) and time. The subjects had to simultaneously move the eyes and point with the finger to the visual t

The clock drawing test in primary care: sensitivity in dementia detection and specificity against normal and depressed elderly.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to examine the sensitivities and specificities of the clock drawing test (CDT) in the detection of dementia among older people in primary care, with particular emphasis on the effect of depression on CDT specificity. Most previous studies have been sited in specialist settings and few have addressed the issue of specificity against depression. METHODS: Comparison of cohorts identified from community-based screening with GMS-AGECAT. The CDT and the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) were administered to 41 elderly subjects with organic disorder (dementia

The connubial crucible: newlywed years as predictors of marital delight, distress, and divorce.

This study showed that couples' newlywed marriages and changes in their union over the first 2 years foreshadow their long-term marital fate after 13 years. Consistent with the enduring dynamics model, differences in the intensity of newlyweds' romance as well as the extent to which they expressed negative feelings toward each other predicted (a) whether or not they were happy 13 years later (among those who stayed married) and (b) how long their marriage lasted prior to separation (for those who divorced). The results provide little support for the idea that emergence of distress (e.g., incre

ERP and fMRI measures of visual spatial selective attention.

In two prior studies, we investigated the neural mechanisms of spatial attention using a combined event-related potential (ERP) and positron emission tomography (PET) approach (Heinze et al. [1994]: Nature 392:543-546; Mangun et al. [1997]: Hum Brain Mapp 5:273-279). Neural activations in extrastriate cortex were observed in the PET measures for attended stimuli, and these effects were related to attentional modulations in the ERPs at specific latencies. The present study used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and ERPs in single subjects to investigate the intersubject variability i

Behavioral and electrophysiological indices of voicing-cue discrimination: laterality patterns and development.

Voicing is an important phonetic dimension that distinguishes voiced (i.e., /b/) from voiceless-aspirated stop consonants (i.e.,/ph/) in English. Perception of discrete voicing categories is affected by a number of acoustic cues. The present paper reviews evidence from brain-damaged populations indicating that the perception of certain voicing cues is less dependent upon left hemisphere mechanisms than the ability to perceive place of articulation contrasts (e.g., /b/ vs./d/). In addition, electrophysiological and dichotic listening studies with neurologically normal individuals support the vi

Responses to chromatic and luminance contrast in glaucoma: a psychophysical and electrophysiological study.

Increasing anatomical evidence indicates that large retinal ganglion cells (M-cells) are preferentially damaged in primary open angle glaucoma (OAG), while the smaller ganglion cells (P-cells) are relatively spared. In 13 patients with defined OAG and modest visual field defects, we evaluated the responses to stimuli that are expected to involve primarily the function of the P-pathway and compared them with those of control subjects. The psychophysical contrast sensitivity (CS), the PERG and the VEPs were measured for red-green gratings of pure chromatic contrast, as well as yellow-black grati

Attentional tracking and inhibition of return in dynamic displays.

Seven experiments were conducted to replicate, and extend, a finding by Tipper, Driver, and Weaver (1991). They reported evidence for dynamic, object-centered inhibition of return (IOR)--that is, coding of inhibition following a peripheral cue in coordinates that move with the previously cued object, providing a dynamic bias against reattending to that object. The present experiments used a variation of Posner and Cohen's (1984) spatial cuing paradigm. Subjects responded manually (simple reaction time) to a luminance increment in one of two peripheral boxes, one of which had previously been cu

Electrophysiologic manifestations of impaired temporal lobe auditory processing in verbal auditory agnosia.

The present study examined the extent to which verbal auditory agnosia (VAA) is primarily a phonemic decoding disorder, as contrasted to a more global defect in acoustic processing. Subjects were six young adults who presented with VAA in childhood and who, at the time of testing, showed varying degrees of residual auditory discrimination impairment. They were compared to a group of young adults with normal language development matched for age and gender. Cortical event-related potentials (ERPs) were recorded to tones and to consonant-vowel stimuli presented in an "oddball" discrimination para

Bilateral hemispheric processing deficits in schizophrenia.

Schizophrenics are known to have an early visual processing deficit, but the exact nature of that deficit is unclear. The present research was undertaken in order to establish the difference between schizophrenic and normal subjects in their processing of visual stimuli. Previous studies have shown that short duration stimuli activate a transient visual system which is associated with the right hemisphere, while longer duration stimuli activate the sustained system associated with the left hemisphere. The present study was designed to determine the effects of activation/inactivation of both th

Some observations on the problem of recovery of function following brain damage.

Functional restitution following brain damage can occur either because of a return of the original function or because of compensatory changes involving functional substitution. In any study of post-traumatic recovery it is important to use an experimental model which can discriminate between these separate mechanisms. Recovery from unilateral frontal eye-field damage was used as a model in both monkeys and rats. In particular, the role of the intact hemisphere in the recovery process was examined. Section of the corpus callosum was found to restore the original visual neglect both in monkey a

Human EEG spectra before and during cannabis hallucinations.

EEG correlates of subjective experiences induced by delta9-trans-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and EEG correlates of individual disposition to such experiences were investigated. Twelve normal volunteers took 200 mug/kg THC orally. The subjects were asked to signal subjective experiences. The EEG was analyzed (period analysis) before and repeatedly after THC injestion, during resting, attention, eye closure, visual hallucinations, and body image disturbances. EEG frequency spectra differed significantly between resting and visual hallucinations and body image disturbances. The differences include

Recognition and reproduction of words by Down's syndrome and non-Down's syndrome retarded children.

Children with Down's syndrome were compared with other severely retarded children on tests of recognition and reproduction of real and nonsense words after 0-, 15-, and 30-seconds delay. The results indicated that Down's syndrome children performed better on the recognition task, but worse on the reproduction task after delay, as compared with the other retarded children. It was hypothesized that the articulatory deficit in the Down's syndrome group is part of a general motor disability due to a difficulty in preprogramming sequences of movements.
