Urban green space and mental health among people living alone: The mediating roles of relational and collective restoration in an 18-country sample.

Rates of living alone, especially in more urbanised areas, are increasing across many industrialised countries, with associated increases in feelings of loneliness and poorer mental health. Recent studies have suggested that access to nature (e.g. parks and green spaces) can reduce the stressors associated with loneliness, partly through providing opportunities to nurture personal relationships (relational restoration) and engage in normative community activities (collective restoration). Such associations might vary across different household compositions and socio-demographic or geographical

Early delivery following chronic and acute ambient temperature exposure: a comprehensive survival approach.

BACKGROUND: Ambient temperature, particularly heat, is increasingly acknowledged as a trigger for preterm delivery but study designs have been limited and results mixed. We aimed to comprehensively evaluate the association between ambient temperature throughout pregnancy and preterm delivery. METHODS: We estimated daily temperature throughout pregnancy using a cutting-edge spatiotemporal model for 5347 live singleton births from three prospective cohorts in France, 2002-2018. We performed Cox regression (survival analysis) with distributed lags to evaluate time-varying associations with prete

Heat tolerance, thermal equilibrium and environmental management strategies for dairy cows living in intertropical regions.

This review makes an attempt to characterize the physical attributes of heat tolerance, thermal equilibrium and thermal stress thresholds for dairy cows living in tropical environments, with a particular emphasis on pasture-based systems. Under such circumstances, the radiant heat load is the principal climatic factor that determines rates of heat and mass exchanges between cows and the environment. This fact may explain why simple mechanistic models based on air temperature and humidity are not adequately predicting thermal stress thresholds for cattle in tropical regions. To overcome this li

The association of COVID-19 incidence with temperature, humidity, and UV radiation - A global multi-city analysis.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: The associations between COVID-19 transmission and meteorological factors are scientifically debated. Several studies have been conducted worldwide, with inconsistent findings. However, often these studies had methodological issues, e.g., did not exclude important confounding factors, or had limited geographic or temporal resolution. Our aim was to quantify associations between temporal variations in COVID-19 incidence and meteorological variables globally. METHODS: We analysed data from 455 cities across 20 countries from 3 February to 31 October 2020. We used a time-seri

Community-level trachoma ecological associations and the use of geospatial analysis methods: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Trachoma is targeted for global elimination as a public health problem by 2030. Understanding individual, household, or community-associated factors that may lead to continued transmission or risk of recrudescence in areas where elimination has previously been achieved, is essential in reaching and maintaining trachoma elimination. We aimed to identify climatic, demographic, environmental, infrastructural, and socioeconomic factors associated in the literature with trachoma at community-level and assess the strength of their association with trachoma. Because of the potential power

Different characteristics of individual particles from light-duty diesel vehicle at the launching and idling state by AAC-SPAMS.

The rapid development of cities and economic prosperity greatly motivates the growth of vehicular exhaust particles, especially the diesel-exhausted particles from the large fleet of passenger and freight, which present profound implications on climate, air quality, and biological health (e.g., pulmonary, autoimmune and cardiovascular diseases). As important physiochemical properties of atmospheric aerosols, however, the mixing state and effective density of individual particles emitted from diesel-powered vehicles under different driving conditions and their environmental implications remain

Improved reproductive performance achieved in tropical dairy cows by dietary beta-carotene supplementation.

Dairy farming in tropical climates is challenging as heat stress can impair reproduction in cows. Previous studies have demonstrated the beneficial effects of beta-carotene supplementation on bovine reproductive performance. This study was performed in Thailand, where the temperature-humidity index (THI) during the experimental periods was measured to range from 78.4 to 86.1. Lactating Holstein cows classified as repeat breeders (previous artificial insemination [AI] failures) were randomly assigned into two treatments, control treatment (T1; received placebo, n = 200) and test treatment (T2;

Diurnal behaviors and herd characteristics of dairy cows housed in a compost-bedded pack barn system under hot and humid conditions.

With international demand for production systems aimed at thermal comfort and animal welfare, milk producers have become increasingly interested in compost barns. However, doubts about the behavioral aspects of cows in tropical and subtropical climates remain, because the compost barn system offers a larger bed area per animal at a lower stocking rate. The objective of this study was to evaluate whether the diurnal behaviors, hygiene and lameness of crossbred dairy cows are influenced by different number of lactations when housed in a compost-bedded pack barn system under hot and humid conditi

Functional Role of Native and Invasive Filter-Feeders, and the Effect of Parasites: Learning from Hypersaline Ecosystems.

Filter-feeding organisms are often keystone species with a major influence on the dynamics of aquatic ecosystems. Studies of filtering rates in such taxa are therefore vital in order to understand ecosystem functioning and the impact of natural and anthropogenic stressors such as parasites, climate warming and invasive species. Brine shrimps Artemia spp. are the dominant grazers in hypersaline systems and are a good example of such keystone taxa. Hypersaline ecosystems are relatively simplified environments compared with much more complex freshwater and marine ecosystems, making them suitable

Vitamin D deficiency and its predictors in a country with thirteen months of sunshine: the case of school children in central Ethiopia.

Studies examining vitamin D status among children living in sunny climates indicated that children did not receive adequate vitamin D, however, this has not been looked at among children living in Ethiopia. In this study, we determined vitamin D deficiency and its predictors among school children aged 11-18 years, examining circulating 25-hydroxy vitamin D [25(OH)D]. The school-based cross-sectional study was conducted in schools in Adama Town (n = 89) and in rural Adama (n = 85) for a total sample of 174. Students were randomly selected using multi-stage stratified sampling method from both s

The CARI guidelines. Biochemical targets.

BACKGROUND: Uraemic hyperparathyroidism remains a common clinical problem. Conversely, oversuppression of parathyroid hormone (PTH), particularly in diabetic patients on peritoneal dialysis, has been implicated in low bone turnover disease. Race may also be an important factor determining susceptibility to hyperparathyroidism and the different forms of renal osteodystrophy. These compounding factors that might influence the severity of hyperparathyroidism have been studied in US dialysis and predialysis populations. Dialysis-dependant Africans and Afro-Caribbeans (AC) are known to have higher

Soil-transmitted helminthiasis in mainland China from 2016 to 2020: a population-based study.

BACKGROUND: Soil-transmitted helminthiasis is epidemic in China and many other countries of the world, and has caused substantial burdens to human health. We conducted successive national monitoring in China from 2016 to 2020 to analyze the prevalence, changing trends, and factors influencing soil-transmitted helminthiasis, which provided a reference for future control strategies. METHODS: Soil-transmitted helminth monitoring was carried out in 31 provinces (autonomous regions or municipalities, herein after referred to as "provinces") throughout China. Each province determined the number and

Mapping the global prevalence, incidence, and mortality of Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium vivax malaria, 2000-22: a spatial and temporal modelling study.

BACKGROUND: Malaria remains a leading cause of illness and death globally, with countries in sub-Saharan Africa bearing a disproportionate burden. Global high-resolution maps of malaria prevalence, incidence, and mortality are crucial for tracking spatially heterogeneous progress against the disease and to inform strategic malaria control efforts. We present the latest such maps, the first since 2019, which cover the years 2000-22. The maps are accompanied by administrative-level summaries and include estimated COVID-19 pandemic-related impacts on malaria burden. METHODS: We initially modelle

[Response of PM2.5 and O3 to Emission Reductions in Nanjing Based on Random Forest Algorithm].

High levels of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and ozone (O3) in ambient air affect climate change and also endanger human health and ecosystems. Air pollution in Nanjing has been improving since the implementation of the "Air Pollution Prevention and Control Action Plan" in 2013. However, Nanjing still faces PM2.5 and O3 pollution. Evaluating the response of pollutant concentrations to the reductions in precursor emissions is helpful to obtain effective strategies of emission reduction to improve pollution levels. The sensitive simulations of emission perturbation in atmospheric chemistry mod

Risks to aquatic organisms from use of chlorpyrifos in the United States.

The risk of chlorpyrifos (CPY) to aquatic organisms in surface water of North America was assessed using measured concentrations in surface waters and modeling of exposures to provide daily concentrations that better characterize peak exposures.Ecological effects were compared with results of standard laboratory toxicity tests with single species as well as microcosm and mesocosm studies comprised of complex aquatic communities. The upper 90th centile 96-h concentrations(annual maxima) of chlorpyrifos in small streams in agricultural watersheds in Michigan and Georgia were estimated to be :-:;

Epidemiological Investigation of a Diarrhea Outbreak in the South Pacific Island Nation of Tuvalu During a Severe La Niña-Associated Drought Emergency in 2011.

The association between heavy rainfall and an increased risk of diarrhea has been well established but less is known about the effect of drought on diarrhea transmission. In 2011, the Pacific island nation of Tuvalu experienced a concurrent severe La Niña-associated drought and large diarrhea outbreak. We conducted a field investigation in Tuvalu to identify factors that contributed to epidemic transmission in the context of a drought emergency. Peak case numbers coincided with the nadir of recorded monthly rainfall, the lowest recorded since 1930. Independent factors associated with increased

Behavioral patterns in broiler chickens monitored with a multi-view tracking system.

Understanding behavioral changes across the production cycle is essential for broiler welfare assessment. This study monitored three key broiler chicken behaviors over time: activity level (based on net displacement per second) and time spent at the feeder and drinker zones. It includes the analysis of activity dynamics (high, medium, and low activity level), distance traveled over time, the effect of time of day (morning: 9:00-12:00, midday: 13:00-16:00, and evening: 18:00-21:00) on behaviors, and behavior during periods of experimentally induced high environmental temperature (29,4 ± 1°C; fr

Genome-Wide SNP Diversity in Natural and Cultivated Populations Informs Restoration Ecology With Three Calamagrostis Species From the Northwest Territories of Canada.

There is growing demand for data-driven frameworks to guide robust plant restoration strategies in response to anthropogenic disturbances. Several seed-sourcing (i.e., provenancing) strategies have been proposed, which balance the use of locally adapted genotypes against mixed genotypes to reduce mutation load or assist migration to anticipate future climate scenarios. However, taxonomic uncertainty and lack of data characterizing genetic differentiation and gene flow have hindered provenancing strategies for many ecologically important non-model plant species, especially those in remote but v
