Acute kidney injury in ELBW infants (<  750 grams) and its associated risk factors.

BACKGROUND: The advancement of neonatology over the past 20 years has allowed a greater number of ELBW infants to survive. However, these advancements have contributed to the increased incidence of acute kidney injury (AKI) seen in this population. Understanding the risk factors for AKI in this population of ELBW infants is imperative for the successful survival of these infants since the morbidity and mortality rates from this disease are increasing. OBJECTIVES: 1) to determine the prevalence of AKI in ELBW (<  750 grams). 2) to compare the mortality rate of ELBW infants (<  750 grams) with

Bacterial profile and antimicrobial susceptibility patterns of isolates from inanimate objects used by healthcare professionals at Debre Markos Comprehensive Specialized Hospital, Northwest Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Healthcare-associated infections occur in patients under medical care, which is a major public health issue in hospitals worldwide. The prevalence is two to three folds higher in developing countries compared to developed countries. Inanimate objects used by healthcare professionals such as gowns, mobile phones, and stethoscopes are highly prone to bacterial contamination from the healthcare setting. In Ethiopia, there is a paucity of published data on the bacterial profile and susceptibility patterns of an isolates. OBJECTIVE: To determine the bacterial profile and antimicrobial

Genomic analysis of virulence factors and antimicrobial resistance of group B Streptococcus isolated from pregnant women in northeastern Mexico.

INTRODUCTION: Group B Streptococcus (GBS) causes infections in women during pregnancy and puerperium and invasive infections in newborns. The genes lmb, cylE, scpB, and hvgA are involved with increased virulence of GBS, and hypervirulent clones have been identified in different regions. In addition, increasing resistance of GBS to macrolides and lincosamides has been reported, so knowing the patterns of antibiotic resistance may be necessary to prevent and treat GBS infections. This study aimed to identify virulence genes and antibiotic resistance associated with GBS colonization in pregnant w

The protective effect of recombinant Lactococcus lactis oral vaccine on a Clostridium difficile-infected animal model.

BACKGROUND: Oral immunization with vaccines may be an effective strategy for prevention of Clostridium difficile infection (CDI). However, application of previously developed vaccines for preventing CDI has been limited due to various reasons. Here, we developed a recombinant Lactococcus lactis oral vaccine and evaluated its effect on a C. difficile-infected animal model established in golden hamsters in attempt to provide an alternative strategy for CDI prevention. METHODS: Recombinant L. lactis vaccine was developed using the pTRKH2 plasmid, a high-copy-number Escherichia coli-L. shuttle ve

[Determination of 42 antibiotic residues in seven categories in water using large volume direct injection by ultra high performance liquid chromatography-triple quadrupole mass spectrometry].

Antibiotics are emerging contaminants that have recently attracted attention. They have been detected in natural water and pose health concerns owing to potential antibiotic resistance. Antibiotics are ubiquitous in aquatic environments, with a wide spectrum and trace levels. It is difficult to detect all types of antibiotics with completely different physicochemical properties. Solid phase extraction (SPE) is a common sample preparation procedure. For a fast and high-throughput continuous on-line analysis of these emerging contaminants, a method for the determination of 42 antibiotics (groupe

Improvement in psychotic symptoms after a gluten-free diet in a boy with complex autoimmune illness.

At age 8, “Chris,” a Caucasian boy, experienced intermittent auditory and visual hallucinations, but without bizarre behaviors or much deterioration in functioning. At age 15, he developed a depressed mood, started talking to himself, and became socially withdrawn, and his academic performance declined. He was hospitalized and diagnosed as having major depressive disorder with psychotic features. MRI and EEG showed no abnormalities. Treatment with escitalopram (10 mg/day) and aripiprazole (5 mg/day) had little effect. Several weeks after discharge, he was admitted for a second time with the sa

A simple, efficient and inexpensive program for preventing prematurity.

Prevention of prematurity and of low birth weight is--because of the associated increased risk of mortality and morbidity--one of the most urgent tasks of perinatal medicine. Whereas the rate of prematures all over the world does not vary very much (5-10%), the rate of infants born with low birth weight lies between 3.6% and 10% in the industrial countries and between 9.8% and 43% in the developing countries, where the main cause of low birth weight is intrauterine malnutrition. As there are different causes for prematurity and low birth weight, but also because various countries have differen

Synthesis and antiparasitic and antitumor activity of 2, 4-diamino-6-(arylmethyl)-5,6,7,8-tetrahydroquinazoline analogues of piritrexim.

Nineteen previously undescribed 2,4-diamino-6-(arylmethyl)-5,6,7, 8-tetrahydroquinazolines (5a-m, 10-12) were synthesized as part of a larger effort to assess the therapeutic potential of lipophilic dihydrofolate reductase (DHFR) inhibitors against opportunistic infections of AIDS. Condensation of appropriately substituted (arylmethyl)triphenylphosphoranes with 4, 4-ethylenedioxycyclohexanone, followed by hydrogenation (H2/Pd-C) and acidolysis, yielded the corresponding 4-(arylmethyl)cyclohexanones, which were then condensed with cyanoguanidine to form the tetrahydroquinazolines. Longitudinal surveillance of antibiotic resistance and virulence evolution in Clostridioides difficile: a 4-year retrospective study of hospitalized patients in a tertiary hospital in China.

UNLABELLED: Clostridioides difficile (C. difficile) is the primary pathogen responsible for nosocomial infectious diarrhea and pseudomembranous colitis. In China, metronidazole and vancomycin are the preferred treatments for C. difficile infection (CDI). This study aimed to investigate the evolution of vancomycin (VA) and metronidazole (MTZ) resistance, as well as the longitudinal changes in virulence over time, using next-generation sequencing, drug susceptibility tests, and analysis of resistance and virulence genes. Additionally, we monitored the emergence of the highly virulent C. difficil

[A New Case of Fournier's Gangrene Caused by Actinotignum schaalii].

Actinotignum schaalii (formerly known as Actinobaculum schaalii) is an anaerobic or facultative anaerobic gram-positive bacillus that can be found commensally in the urogenital region. It can be overlooked because it grows slowly and is difficult to identify with classical microbiology laboratory techniques. Colonies become visible after 48-72 hours of incubation on blood agar in anaerobic or CO₂-rich media. While it typically causes urinary tract infection in older individuals, cases of bacteremia, vertebral osteomyelitis, endocarditis and cellulitis have been reported. Fournier's gangrene ca

Preventing neonatal group B streptococcal infection. Intrapartum antibiotic prophylaxis in some high-risk situations.

Group B streptococci (GBS) are the leading cause of life-threatening neonatal bacterial infections in developed countries. The newborn is initially colonised during passage through the birth canal. Maternal vaginal carriage is usually asymptomatic. How safe and effective are strategies aimed at preventing severe neonatal GBS infection? To answer these questions, we conducted a review of the literature using the standard Prescrire methodology. In France, Group B streptococci are present in the vagina of about 10-15% of women towards the end of pregnancy. Mother-to-child transmission can occur w
