Is protection against shigellosis induced by natural infection with Plesiomonas shigelloides?

Shigellosis due to Shigella sonnei is rare among people growing up and living in developing countries; however, infections due to S sonnei becomes more common than those due to S flexneri as societies develop economically. The relation between risk of S sonnei infection and economic development may be explained by the exposure of developing-country populations to Plesiomonas shigelloides. P shigelloides is often found in surface water, and one serotype (serotype 17) possesses a cell-wall lipopolysaccharide identical to that of S sonnei. Thus, exposure to P shigelloides by drinking contaminated…

Homosexuality and police terror in Turkey.

Being a way of sexual living as old as human history, homosexuality occupies an interesting place in the life of the Turkish people of the Republic of Turkey. This has been so since the days of the glorious Ottoman Empire. In the year 1987, instead of investigating the roots of homosexuality, the pressing need has become to present a particular view of homosexuality in Turkey today. To be more specific, there is a need to explain the problems of Turkish homosexuals and suggest certain vital solutions. Our country is constantly endeavoring to become "westernized" and it is claimed that steps ar

Obstetrics and the general surgeon.

From a small Pacific island country of Tuvalu, an analysis of 132 obstetric and gynecologic patients operated upon by one general surgeon du … 1,000 live-born infants. It is concluded that a considerable share of work of a general surgeon in developing countries consists of obstetric and gynecologic procedures. This should be taken into consideration when training and recruiting surgeons for that kind of work. A general surgeon with obstetric experience can perform cesarean section with an acceptable morbid …

Progress towards the eradication of dracunculiasis.

In 1980 the World Health Organization instituted the Decade of Safe Water and Sanitation. As part of that initiative new impetus was given to programmes which dealt with the eradication of dracunculiasis. This paper, based on the review of several studies, discusses the nature of the disease, its impact upon the affected population, the possible solutions, and the progress accomplished thus far in several African nations. The use of health education is advocated as a major contributor towards the eradication of dracunculiasis.

Socioeconomic inequalities in childhood mortality: the 1970s to the 1980s.

The last three decades have witnessed substantial reductions in childhood mortality in most developing nations. Despite this encouraging picture, analysis of WFS and DHS survey data shows that socioeconomic disparities in survival chances have not narrowed between the 1970s and 1980s, and in some cases, have widened. Changes in mother's education and father's occupation contributed only modestly to secular declines in mortality. In most countries studied, no more than 20 per cent of the national trend could be accounted for by compositional improvements. The median contributions of improvement

Migration and ethnicity in a non-immigration country: foreigners in a united Germany.

"The re-unification of Germany has dramatically altered the position of settled minorities in [the former West Germany]. Ethnic Germans have been granted rights hitherto denied to migrant workers and their descendants. There has been a pronounced growth in hostility and violence directed mainly at Turks and Yugoslavs. This has been most evident amongst the former citizens of the [former East Germany] and other ethnic Germans. These events have posed anew questions of legitimacy which have been answered so far in terms reminiscent of ideologies from the Second World War."

Perspectives on rapid elimination and ultimate global eradication of paralytic poliomyelitis caused by polioviruses.

Poliomyelitis caused by polioviruses has already been eradicated from industrialized countries of North America, Europe, Asia and Oceania, but the procedures by which this eradication was achieved are not adequate for the poor tropical and subtropical countries. The major challenge now is first to eliminate it rapidly from Asia and Africa where an estimated 250,000 cases and 25,000 deaths currently occur annually. The great progress toward eradication of "wild" polioviruses from poor tropical and subtropical countries in Latin America was achieved not by the procedures still recommended by the

Renal involvement in leprosy.

Renal involvement was studied in 70 patients with leprosy by urine analysis, detailed biochemical investigations and renal histopathology. Of these 70 patients, 40 had lepromatous and 30 had non-lepromatous leprosy. Creatinine clearance was reduced in 20 patients. Renal biopsies were studied in 50 cases (25 lepromatous, 25 non-lepromatous); of which in 13 cases (10 lepromatous, 3 non-lepromatous) abnormal histopathological lesions were found by light microscopy. Amyloidosis was seen in only one lepromatous patient. No acid-fast bacilli and leproma like lesion were demonstrated in any case.
