Effectiveness of non-pharmacological treatments for sexual difficulties in adults with multiple sclerosis: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Sexual difficulties affect 50%-80% of people with multiple sclerosis (PwMS) and arise from neurogenic, symptom-mediated, and psychosocial mechanisms. Despite their prevalence, sexual dysfunction remains under-recognized in multiple sclerosis (MS) care and underrepresented in clinical guidelines. Non-pharmacological interventions-such as psychosexual counseling, educational programs, and physiotherapy-may provide accessible and scalable management options. However, their effectiveness and quality remain uncertain. OBJECTIVES: This review aimed to systematically evaluate and meta-

Gender beliefs and norms underlying intimate partner violence stigma among women living in Botswana: Results of an exploratory factor analysis.

Gender inequitable beliefs, blaming attitudes, externalised and internalised stigma are commonly recognised barriers for intimate partner violence (IPV) survivors seeking help. However, the measurement of IPV stigma, its associations with inequitable gender beliefs and impacts on survivor disclosure, help-seeking behaviours, and mental health outcomes remain understudied. We explored women's agreement with statements about gendered power dynamics and violence in intimate heterosexual relationships, before identifying and psychometrically testing scales derived for measuring community norms and

Temporal trends from HIV diagnosis to ART initiation among adults living with HIV in the Asia-Pacific (2013-2023).

INTRODUCTION: Data on the impact of World Health Organization (WHO)'s guideline changes and COVID-19 on ART initiation in the Asia-Pacific remain scarce. This study described temporal trends from HIV diagnosis to ART initiation from 2013 to 2023 and its associated factors. METHODS: Adults (≥ 18 years) diagnosed with HIV after 2013 in a regional observational cohort were included. Fine and Gray competing risk regression examined predictors of ART initiation (≥ 3 antiretroviral medications), accounting for those lost to follow-up or deceased before treatment considered as competing risks. Substance Use, Suicidal Behavior, and Other Mental Health Outcomes Among Youth With Intersectional Sexual and Gender Diverse Identities.

OBJECTIVE: Sexual diverse (SD) and gender diverse (GD) youth are at increased risk for adverse mental health outcomes compared to heterosexual/cisgender youth (HC). In this study, we aimed to examine youth risk profiles. We hypothesized that there would be a synergistic effect of SD+GD on mental health outcomes. METHOD: In 2022, a total of 23,915 adolescents in grades 6 to 12 from 60 schools completed the voluntary, confidential Substance Use and Risk Factor (SURF) survey. Questions included screeners for substance use and mental health distress. Regression models examined associations betwee

Associations Among Minority Stress, Allostatic Load, and Drug and Alcohol Use in Sexual Minorities: Protocol for the Queer Health Study-a Longitudinal Feasibility Evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Substance use rates among sexual minorities are disproportionately greater than that of their heterosexual counterparts. Minority stress theory posits that one explanation for disproportionate substance use in sexual minority populations is a result of increased social stress associated with holding a minoritized identity. This minority stress has been linked to a myriad of negative mental health outcomes, including alcohol and drug use. In addition, emerging research has begun to demonstrate links between minority stress and stress physiology dysregulation. While animal and human

The influence of tobacco use, hazardous drinking, and other risk factors on HPV-associated oropharyngeal cancer risk and screening perceptions among gay and bisexual men: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Oropharyngeal cancer is the eighth most common cancer among US men and its incidence is sharply rising. Oropharyngeal cancer manifests in two major ways: the classic form is prevalent among people who use alcohol and tobacco heavily, while a growing subset of incident cases is associated with human papillomavirus-16 (HPV) and transmitted via oral sex. Gay and bisexual men appear at higher risk for each etiologic subset of oropharyngeal cancer than heterosexual men. We conducted a cross-sectional study to learn how tobacco use, hazardous drinking, and other key risk factors affect g

Prevalence & predictors of sexual functioning & sex hormone profiles among men with opioid dependence: A community-based, cross-sectional study.

Background & objectives Though sexual dysfunction are common in individuals with opioid dependence, the relative contribution of hormonal and psychological determinants remains unclear. Studies assessing sexual functioning and sex hormone levels together in this population remain limited. This study aimed to evaluate self-reported sexual dysfunction and sex hormone alterations, and their association with demographic, psychosocial, and hormonal factors in men with opioid dependence, primarily using heroin. Methods In this cross-sectional study, 143 sexually active males (aged 18-50 yr) with opi

Cannabis use among primary care patients with depression and anxiety disorders: cross-sectional analysis in a large health system in Los Angeles, CA.

BACKGROUND: Depression, anxiety, and cannabis use are growing, interconnected primary care concerns, but remain understudied due few health systems conducting systematic cannabis use screening. This study examines cannabis use and risk of cannabis use disorder (CUD) among primary care patients, comparing outcomes by depression and anxiety diagnoses and psychotropic prescriptions. METHODS: We assessed past three-month cannabis use, reasons for use, and risk of CUD among 170,032 adult primary care patients at a large health system in Los Angeles, CA under a routine screening protocol using the

A clinico-epidemiological study, assessing possible predictors of mortality and health-related quality of life for people living with visceral leishmaniasis - human immune virus (VL-HIV) co-infection in a high burden kala-azar endemic state of India: a descriptive cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Visceral leishmaniasis-human immunodeficiency virus (VL-HIV) co-infection has emerged as a serious concern, which could adversely affect the VL elimination efforts of the country. These patients have a poor VL therapeutic success rate, more drug-related toxicity, and relapses resulting in high mortality. Despite the emerging pattern of VL-HIV co-infection, there have been limited studies analyzing the presentation of VL-HIV co-infection in Bihar, India. The present study investigated the clinico-epidemiological features, predictors of mortality, and quality of life for people livin

Experiences of undetectable = untransmittable among couples with different HIV serostatus: a qualitative study in Tanzania and Uganda.

BACKGROUND: HIV serodifferent couples where one partner is living with HIV and the other is not, remain a key population for HIV prevention. Maintaining an undetectable viral load eliminates the risk of sexual HIV transmission, this principle is often summarised as undetectable = untransmittable (U = U). However, the extent to which this principle is understood and utilised by serodifferent couples remains unclear. This study aimed to explore both partners’ perceptions, experiences and adoption of U = U within their relationships. METHODS: We conducted an exploratory qualitative study using in

Evaluating cost-effectiveness of 9-valent HPV vaccination for men who have sex with men by HIV status in Hong Kong.

BACKGROUND: Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection and a leading cause of anal cancer and genital warts, particularly among men who have sex with men (MSM). In Hong Kong, HPV vaccination is currently only offered to school-aged girls, despite the high burden of HPV-related diseases among MSM, especially those living with HIV. Existing cost-effectiveness evaluations of HPV vaccination in Hong Kong primarily focus on female-only strategies and heterosexual men without accounting for differences in HPV infection risks among MSM. In contrast, countries such as

pH-sensitive dual-preventive siRNA-based nanomicrobicide reactivates autophagy and inhibits HIV infection in vaginal CD4+ cells.

Women are more susceptible to HIV transmission through unprotected heterosexual intercourse due to biological and social vulnerabilities. Intravaginal delivery of siRNAs targeting viral genes, host genes, or in combination has shown promising outcomes against HSV, HPV and HIV. Therefore, in this study, we designed, developed and evaluated a pH-sensitive RNAi-based combination nanomicrobide for the prevention/reduction of vaginal transmission of HIV. The nanomicrobide was composed of siRNA-PEI encapsulated PLGA-PEG nanoparticles (siRNA NP) loaded in a HEC gel dosage form with siRNA targeting ho

Oppression-Based Stress and Alcohol Inequities Among Sexual and Gender Minority People: An Intersectional Multilevel Framework.

PURPOSE: Sexual and gender minority (SGM) people are at heightened risk for alcohol use, hazardous drinking, and alcohol use disorder compared to heterosexual and cisgender individuals. This paper: (a) presents an oppression framework that integrates intersectionality, stress, stigma, and addiction-based theories to examine the complex and nuanced ways oppression-based stress (e.g., minority stress) leads to sexual orientation and gender identity inequities in alcohol use; (b) conducts a narrative review that summarizes recent and novel advancements in the literature on the impact of oppressio

Protocol for a randomized controlled trial with a stepped care approach, utilizing PrEP navigation with and without contingency management, for transgender women and sexual minority men with a substance use disorder: Assistance Services Knowledge-PrEP (A.S.K.-PrEP).

BACKGROUND: In the United States, most (~ 70%) annual newly diagnosed HIV infections are among substance-using sexual minority men (SMM) and gender minority transgender women (trans women). Trans women and SMM are more likely to report or be diagnosed with a substance use disorder (SUD) than their cisgender or heterosexual counterparts and the presence of an SUD substantially increases the risk of HIV infection in both groups. Although Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) is highly effective, initiation, adherence, and persistence are exclusively behavioral outcomes; thus, the biomedical benefits o

Measuring Technology-Facilitated Sexual Violence and Abuse in the Chinese Context: Development Study and Content Validity Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Technology-facilitated sexual violence and abuse (TFSVA) encompasses a range of behaviors where digital technologies are used to enable both virtual and in-person sexual violence. Given that TFSVA is an emerging and continually evolving form of sexual abuse, it has been challenging to establish a universally accepted definition or to develop standardized measures for its assessment. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to address the significant gap in research on TFSVA within the Chinese context. Specifically, it sought to develop a TFSVA measurement tool with robust content validity, tai

Clinical breakage, slippage and acceptability of two commercial ultra-thin polyurethane male condoms compared to a commercial thin latex condom: a randomised, masked, 3 way crossover, multi centre controlled study (SAGCS 2).

BACKGROUND: Although natural rubber latex remains dominant as the primary manufacturing material for male condoms synthetic materials first introduced in the early 1990s address many of the limitations of latex including the risk of allergies. Polyurethane elastomers allow condoms to be made significantly thinner to provide greater sensitivity and encourage greater use of condoms for contraception and STI prophylaxis. The primary objective of this Study was to evaluate the breakage, slippage and acceptability of two ultra-thin polyurethane condoms against a thin control latex male condom, desi

The patient-perceived intravaginal ejaculation latency time cut-off for lifelong premature ejaculation.

BACKGROUND: The current cutoff values of intravaginal ejaculation latency time for diagnosing lifelong premature ejaculation do not always match clinical practice, and the inconsistency in the cutoff values of intravaginal ejaculation latency time among different definitions has also posed challenges to both clinical management and research of premature ejaculation. OBJECTIVES: To re-evaluate the intravaginal ejaculation latency time and to find evidence-based cut-off values for diagnosing lifelong premature ejaculation that can be widely accepted and match clinical practice.
