Informing creation of the FEEDS Toolkit to support parent-delivered interventions for eating, drinking and swallowing difficulties in young children with neurodisability: intervention use by neurodevelopmental diagnosis and healthcare professional role.

BACKGROUND: The FEEDS (Focus on Early Eating, Drinking and Swallowing) study focused on interventions used to improve feeding for children with neurodisability and eating, drinking and swallowing difficulties (EDSD), and the outcomes viewed as important by healthcare professionals (HPs) and parent carers. The FEEDS Toolkit was created subsequently as an intervention decision aid to be used collaboratively by parent carers and HPs. This study aimed to inform on current intervention practices and influence toolkit design by ascertaining whether specific intervention use varied by a child's main

Relationship Between Treatment Hours of Selected Disciplines and Change in Pain Impact During the Year Following Referral to an Interdisciplinary Pain Management Center: A Latent Class Analysis.

Introduction: Pain management clinics differ in treatments offered, and little evidence exists regarding which combinations of therapies result in best outcomes. This study analyzed clinical encounters and pain outcomes data for associations between treatment composition and outcomes. Methods: Retrospective observational study of 2,142 predominantly active-duty US service members referred to an interdisciplinary pain management center between 2014 and 2021. Latent class analysis was used to identify treatment groups with distinct outcome patterns during the year following initial assessment. T

MRI screening for uterine leiomyosarcoma.

BACKGROUND: Uterine fibroids are a common benign tumor and can be symptomatic, necessitating resection. Surgical myomectomy is an effective treatment option with a risk of disseminating occult uterine leiomyosarcoma (LMS), creating a need for an effective presurgical screening protocol. Clinical collaboration with contrast-enhanced MRI including T2 and diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) can be utilized as a screening exam. PURPOSE: To review the accuracy and feasibility of an interdisciplinary prospective contrast-enhanced MRI pelvis with DWI screening system for LMS prior to fibroid resection.

Remote Sensing and Wetland Ecology: a South African Case Study.

Remote sensing offers a cost efficient means for identifying and monitoring wetlands over a large area and at different moments in time. In this study, we aim at providing ecologically relevant information on characteristics of temporary and permanent isolated open water wetlands, obtained by standard techniques and relatively cheap imagery. The number, surface area, nearest distance, and dynamics of isolated temporary and permanent wetlands were determined for the Western Cape, South Africa. Open water bodies (wetlands) were mapped from seven Landsat images (acquired during 1987 - 2002) using

Metabolic fingerprints of altered brain growth, osmoregulation and neurotransmission in a Rett syndrome model.

BACKGROUND: Rett syndrome (RS) is the leading cause of profound mental retardation of genetic origin in girls. Since RS is mostly caused by mutations in the MECP2 gene, transgenic animal models such as the Mecp2-deleted ("Mecp2-null") mouse have been employed to study neurological symptoms and brain function. However, an interdisciplinary approach drawing from chemistry, biology and neuroscience is needed to elucidate the mechanistic links between the genotype and phenotype of this genetic disorder. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We performed, for the first time, a metabolomic study of brain

Exploring the impact of public health teams on alcohol premises licensing in England and Scotland (ExILEnS): procotol for a mixed methods natural experiment evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Recent regulatory changes in the system by which premises are licensed to sell alcohol, have given health representatives a formal role in the process in England and Scotland. The degree to which local public health teams engage with this process varies by locality in both nations, which have different licensing regimes. This study aims to critically assess the impact on alcohol-related harms - and mechanisms - of public health stakeholders' engagement in alcohol premises licensing from 2012 to 2018, comparing local areas with differing types and intensities of engagement, and exam

Multidisciplinary management of Paget-Schroetter syndrome. A case series of eight patients.

Paget-Schroetter syndrome (PSS) in the context of upper extremity deep venous thrombosis (DVT) is an uncommon but potentially very serious condition affecting young, healthy adults, in which secondary post-thrombotic syndrome (PTS) can be a complication with major implications. The best treatment option remains controversial, with current guidelines recommending anticoagulation for at least 3 months. However, an incidence of PTS of approximately 50% after 6 months, 30% after 1 year and 25% after 2 years has been found using this therapeutic approach. Consequently, specialized units recommend l

Early vascular consultation in the setting of oncologic resections: benefit for patients and a continuing source of open vascular surgical training.

BACKGROUND: Oncologic surgeons have become more aggressive at tumor resections that often require complex open vascular interventions. Vascular surgeons may be consulted preoperatively to aid in these cases, or commonly called into the operating room for an urgent consult. These operations provide a challenge to the vascular surgeon and also an opportunity for open vascular surgical training of residents. We present our experience with vascular surgical interventions during oncologic resections. METHODS: A retrospective review of a prospectively maintained vascular registry was performed to i

An algorithmic approach for managing orthopaedic surgical wounds of the foot and ankle.

BACKGROUND: Wound breakdown after orthopaedic foot and ankle surgery may necessitate secondary soft tissue coverage. The foot and ankle region is challenging to reconstruct for orthopaedic and plastic surgeons owing to its complex bony anatomy and unique functional demands. Therefore, identifying strategies for plastic surgery of these wounds may help guide surgeons in defining the best treatment plan. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: We evaluated our current algorithmic approach for managing orthopaedic surgical wounds of the foot and ankle with respect to whether (1) prophylactic or simultaneous soft ti

[Current treatment of pelvic ring fractures].

Pelvic injuries are often associated with multiple injuries of other body regions, neurovascular and visceral lesions, as well as hemodynamic instability. The use of a standardized classification characterizing the severity and stability of pelvic fractures and the early stabilization of pelvic ring injuries in appreciation of damage control principles has helped to improve the number of survivors. This is particularly necessary due to the higher number of older patients.Complex pelvic trauma still represents a life-threatening situation for the patient, particularly in multiple traumatized pa

Supporting patients with advanced cancer and their relatives via an interactive online application: a study protocol for the development and feasibility testing of a complex intervention.

INTRODUCTION: Effective support for patients with advanced cancer and their relatives requires addressing individual needs, preferences and wishes, with communication as a central component. However, discussions about end-of-life issues are often perceived as difficult, and communication needs frequently remain unmet. While past interventions have primarily targeted healthcare professionals, evidence suggests that directly involving patients can have positive effects. eHealth solutions offer a promising approach to facilitate access to information, support communication and promote patient eng
