Cross-correlation of EEG frequency bands and heart rate variability for sleep apnoea classification.

Sleep apnoea is a sleep breathing disorder which causes changes in cardiac and neuronal activity and discontinuities in sleep pattern when observed via electrocardiogram (ECG) and electroencephalogram (EEG). Using both statistical analysis and Gaussian discriminative modelling approaches, this paper presents a pilot study of assessing the cross-correlation between EEG frequency bands and heart rate variability (HRV) in normal and sleep apnoea clinical patients. For the study we used EEG (delta, theta, alpha, sigma and beta) and HRV (LF(nu), HF(nu) and LF/HF) features from the spectral analysis

An investigation into the statistical properties of TB episodes in a South African community with high HIV prevalence.

Continuous differential equations are often applied to small populations with little time spent on understanding uncertainty brought about by small-population effects. Despite large numbers of individuals being latently infected with Mycobacterium tuberculosis (TB), progression from latent infection to observable disease is a relatively rare event. For small communities, this means case counts are subject to stochasticity, and deterministic models may not be appropriate tools for interpreting transmission trends. Furthermore, the nonlinear nature of the underlying dynamics means that fluctuati

Air pollution, weather, and respiratory emergency room visits in two northern New England cities: an ecological time-series study.

Daily emergency room (ER) visits for all respiratory (ICD-9 460-519) and asthma (ICD-9 493) were compared with daily sulfur dioxide (SO2), ozone (O3), and weather variables over the period 1998-2000 in Portland, Maine (population 248,000), and 1996-2000 in Manchester, New Hampshire (population 176,000). Seasonal variability was removed from all variables using nonparametric smoothed function (LOESS) of day of study. Generalized additive models were used to estimate the effect of elevated levels of pollutants on ER visits. Relative risks of pollutants are reported over their interquartile range

Multisite external validation of a risk prediction model for the diagnosis of blood stream infections in febrile pediatric oncology patients without severe neutropenia.

BACKGROUND: Pediatric oncology patients are at an increased risk of invasive bacterial infection due to immunosuppression. The risk of such infection in the absence of severe neutropenia (absolute neutrophil count ≥ 500/μL) is not well established and a validated prediction model for blood stream infection (BSI) risk offers clinical usefulness. METHODS: A 6-site retrospective external validation was conducted using a previously published risk prediction model for BSI in febrile pediatric oncology patients without severe neutropenia: the Esbenshade/Vanderbilt (EsVan) model. A reduced model (Es

Adjusting intraocular pressure for central corneal thickness does not improve prediction models for primary open-angle glaucoma.

PURPOSE: To determine if the accuracy of the baseline prediction model for the development of primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) in patients with ocular hypertension can be improved by correcting intraocular pressure (IOP) for central corneal thickness (CCT). DESIGN: Reanalysis of the baseline prediction model for the development of POAG from the Ocular Hypertension Treatment Study (OHTS) substituting IOP adjusted for CCT using 5 different correction formulae for unadjusted IOP. PARTICIPANTS: A total of 1433 of 1636 participants randomized to OHTS who had complete baseline data for factors i

Impact of trial design on the estimation of drug potency and power in clinical trials of haemophilia with inhibitors.

Historically, clinical trials of haemophilia with inhibitors (HwI) have been challenged by the small patient population. New approaches to clinical trial methodology and statistical modelling could potentially be used for study optimization. The aim of this work was to evaluate the impact of different trial designs and study conditions on the estimated drug potency and power, and compare traditional statistical methods with repeated time-to-event (RTTE) modelling in terms of power. Bleeding information from a clinical trial of 23 haemophilia patients with inhibitors treated on-demand was used

Damage Scaling Laws at Crack Tip in Disordered Materials.

We investigate the damage mechanisms governing crack propagation in disordered solids using random lattice models. Our simulations reveal two successive damage scaling laws at the crack tip, characterized by the coefficient of variation of the critical damage density. Close to the crack tip, the scaling exponent is ∼-0.5, transitioning to ∼-0.25 at larger distances. This transition uncovers a crack-tip equiprobable damage zone (EDZ), whose size increases with material disorder. Within the EDZ, damage exhibits statistical uniformity and the critical damage density is well approximated by a bino

Traits are dynamic.

There has long been opposition to conceptualizing personality disorders as maladaptive variants of the 5-factor model. The debate though is now shifting away from the coverage of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition, Section II personality disorders to the coverage of moment-to-moment contingencies within everyday life. Miskewicz et al. (2022) reported that trait models do account well for the intensity of triggers and the symptomatic response to these triggers but not for the contingency of the symptoms on the triggers. However, there are fundamental concep

Longitudinal effect of emotional processing on psychological symptoms in women under 50 with breast cancer.

Breast cancer is a potential traumatic event associated with psychological symptoms, but few studies have analysed its impact in under-50 women. Emotional processing is a successful function in integrating traumatic experiences. This work analysed the relationship between emotional processing and psychological symptoms during three phases of treatment (before hospitalization, counselling after surgery and adjuvant therapy) in 50 women under the age of 50 with breast cancer. Mixed-effects models tested statistical differences among phases. There were significant differences in symptoms during t

Anger, anxiety, and depression as risk factors for cardiovascular disease: the problems and implications of overlapping affective dispositions.

Several recent reviews have identified 3 affective dispositions--depression, anxiety, and anger-hostility--as putative risk factors for coronary heart disease. There are, however, mixed and negative results. Following a critical summary of epidemiological findings, the present article discusses the construct and measurement overlap among the 3 negative affects. Recognition of the overlap necessitates the development of more complex affect-disease models and has implications for the interpretation of prior studies, statistical analyses, prevention, and intervention in health psychology and beha

Chronic progressive external ophthalmoplegia in patients with large heteroplasmic mitochondrial DNA deletions: an immunocytochemical study.

Immunocytochemical studies with a holocomplex antibody battery in patients with chronic progressive external ophthalmoplegia, with and without large mitochondrial DNA deletions, revealed positive (and often increased) immunoreactivity for all complexes studied in histochemically cytochrome oxidase (COX)-negative areas, suggesting a compensatory up-regulation of these components. Similar findings were observed with subunit-specific probes directed against both nuclear- and mitochondrially encoded gene products. Comparison of staining intensities between the different complexes revealed signific

Using machine learning for predicting cancer-specific mortality in bladder cancer patients undergoing radical cystectomy: a SEER-based study.

BACKGROUND: Accurately assessing the prognosis of bladder cancer patients after radical cystectomy has important clinical and research implications. Current models, based on traditional statistical approaches and complex variables, have limited performance. We aimed to develop a machine learning (ML)-based prognostic model to predict 5-year cancer-specific mortality (CSM) in bladder cancer patients undergoing radical cystectomy, and compare its performance with current validated models. METHODS: Patients were selected from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database and the First

Evaluating multivariable prediction models for Parkinson's disease prognosis: a scoping review protocol.

IntroductionParkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterised by heterogeneous motor symptoms, non-motor symptoms and rates of disease progression; phenotype and prognosis vary by individual. Although researchers have attempted to predict clinical outcomes using biomarkers and other variables, there are limited data on the development, validation and clinical utility of multivariable prediction models for individual prognostication in PD. In this protocol, we will develop a method for identifying, reviewing and appraising existing PD prognostic models in order to summarise

Predicting the amputation risk for patients with diabetic foot ulceration - a Bayesian decision support tool.

BACKGROUND: Diabetes mellitus is a major global health issue with a growing prevalence. In this context, the number of diabetic complications is also on the rise, such as diabetic foot ulcers (DFU), which are closely linked to the risk of lower extremity amputation (LEA). Statistical prediction tools may support clinicians to initiate early tertiary LEA prevention for DFU patients. Thus, we designed Bayesian prediction models, as they produce transparent decision rules, quantify uncertainty intuitively and acknowledge prior available scientific knowledge. METHOD: A logistic regression using o

Targeting Cancer Cachexia: A Mechanistic Evaluation of Anti-GDF-15 Antibody-Based Combination Therapies.

BACKGROUND: In a recent Phase 2 trial in patients with cancer cachexia, the anti-GDF-15 antibody ponsegromab resulted in increased body weight, appetite, muscle mass and physical activity. This study provides compelling evidence that targeting the GDF-15 pathway may offer a viable therapeutic strategy, while raising new mechanistic questions about how GDF-15 neutralization could be optimally integrated with other interventions to reverse the multifactorial cachexia syndrome. This series of experiments aimed to evaluate the effects of anti-GDF-15 antibody treatment in combination with muscle an

Explaining the Links Between School Administrator Leadership, Job Satisfaction, and Participatory School Climate: A Machine Learning-Enhanced Multilevel Analysis of TALIS 2024 School Administrator Data.

A participatory school climate refers to the involvement of school administrators, teachers, and other school members in decision-making processes, their sharing of responsibility, and their collaborative work for school improvement. Since this climate can be related to individual, organizational, and contextual factors such as leadership, job satisfaction, diversity beliefs, workload, well-being, and national context, identifying the key variables that support a participatory school environment is important. This study used TALIS 2024 school administrator data to identify the main predictors

Comparison of stent retriever thrombectomy using 3-dimensional patient-specific models of intracranial circulation with actual middle cerebral artery occlusion thrombectomy cases.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Stent retriever (SR) thrombectomy is commonly used for the treatment of emergent large vessel occlusion (ELVO) in acute ischemic stroke. Clot imaging parameters such as clot length, diameter, distance to the internal carotid artery terminus, and vessel angle where the SR is deployed may predict the likelihood of achieving first pass effect (FPE). Most of the proposed factors that seem to affect recanalization success have been studied individually, and conflicting data derived from clinical versus in vitro studies using 3-dimensional printed models of intracranial circu
