The use of videolaparoscopic methods for the treatment of penetrating stomach and duodenal ulcers, acute cholecystitis, acute pancreatitis, acute appendicitis, intestinal obstruction, acute gynecological diseases and abdominal trauma is analyzed. Laparoscopic methods at urgent abdominal surgery improves the quality of diagnosis and treatment, decrease the rate of postoperative complications and lethality, reduce the hospital stay.

INTRODUCTION: Appendicitis is the most common cause of the acute abdomen and can affect all age groups. Most patients recover quickly but a minority can suffer postoperative complications. This case-note review was undertaken to assess the frequency of these complications.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Adult patients (> 16 years) undergoing an emergency appendicectomy at a University teaching hospital between February 2004 and January 2005 were identified from pathology records. Details of operative procedure, histology and postoperative complications were noted from the hospital case notes

Three children, two boys aged 9 and 6 and a 12-year-old girl, had diffuse abdominal complaints, diarrhoea and a (sub)febrile temperature for several days. On admission, they were found to have a perforated inflamed appendix and peritonitis. Following asystole, intra-abdominal abscesses and an enterocutaneous fistula, the oldest boy showed good recovery after a hospital stay of two months; the girl recovered after one month in hospital following a psoas muscle abscess and two episodes of constrictive pericarditis with threatened tamponade. The younger boy was dead on arrival at the hospital. Ap

Blood and urine concentrations of antithrombin-III, plasminogen, alpha 2-macroglobulin, alpha 1-antitrypsin, degradation products of fibrinogen-fibrin were studied in patients with abdominal suppuration. Noticeable deviations from the normal values especially marked in the severe process indicated the development of DIC syndrome and renal failure. Heavy combined treatment promoted normalization of the hemostasis shifts and eliminated pyo-inflammatory processes in the abdominal cavity.

We studied the clinical course of 506 children consecutively admitted with appendicitis at The Hospital for Sick Children from 1985 to 1989. One hundred eighty-one children (35%), ranging in age from 1 to 17 years, presented with perforation verified by histological examination. Ninety-six of them (53%) had generalized peritonitis, 47 (26%) had localized peritonitis, and 38 (21%) had abscess formation. Usually, triple antibiotics were begun preoperatively if perforation was suspected; otherwise, cefoxitin was started. Triple antibiotics were used postoperatively for 5 to 7 days in almost all c

A prospective study was conducted of 276 patients with suspected acute appendicitis. Two hundred and eighteen patients had operations and 165 had acute appendicitis. Data from a previous retrospective study were used to develop an eight-item statistical program for a pocket calculator and this was made available to half the surgical registrars as an additional aid to clinical decision making. The other registrars involved in the study used only their clinical skills. There was no difference in diagnostic accuracy or frequency of operations or complications between patients managed by the two g

Abdominal CT was the primary diagnostic method used to evaluate 40 patients with suspected periappendiceal abscess. Its subsequent impact on patient management was then analyzed for several categories of clinical presentation, including patients with and without a palpable right-lower-quadrant mass and postoperative patients. CT was reliable in distinguishing periappendiceal abscesses from phlegmons; 17 of 18 patients with phlegmons responded promptly to antibiotic therapy alone without need for surgery. Patients with larger, poorly localized abscesses underwent early surgical drainage. CT was

Bacteria were isolated from 153 (47.5%) swabs of the appendix fossa in 322 patients undergoing appendicectomy. The commonest organism was Bacteroides species found in 78% of specimens. Other Gram-negative bacilli such as Klebsiella, or Enterobacter, and Esch. coli were present in 29 and 27% respectively. Gram-positive cocci were less frequently isolated.A positive culture was obtained more commonly in perforated appendicitis (79%) than where chronic fibrosis, lymphoid hyperplasia, or acute appendicitis was present or when the appendix was normal. Bacteroides was isolated twice as often in perf

INTRODUCTION: Appendicitis diagnosis relies heavily on medical imaging procedure studies; however, a definite diagnosis is obtained through histological assessment. Understanding the imaging characteristics and their relation to various histological phases enhance the quality of treatment recommendations. This study analyzed imaging characteristics of acute appendicitis in relation to its histological severity.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted using data from a third-level hospital. Appendectomy specimens from patients with prior computed tomography (CT) scans or ultrasound (US)…

Pet exposure, coffee consumption, appendectomy, higher educational attainment, light alcohol consumption, and fruit intake were associated with reduced UC risk. Current smoking was associated with a lower risk of UC in case-control studies, whereas the association was not statistically significa …

This study aims to investigate the etiology, risk factors, and management outcomes of peritoneal malabsorption, including pseudocysts and no … of malabsorption patients vs. 11.3% without, including even minor procedures (e.g., PEG placement, appendectomy, inguinal hernia repair). Management achieved peritoneal salvage in 7 of 10 patients; 5 episodes required only one procedure, while 6 episodes involved multiple interventions, with 3 ultimately needing ventriculoatrial shunt conversion. This small s …
