From the Four-Orbital Model to the Three-Orbital Model: Parameterizing the Qx/Qy-Band Energies in Phthalocyanines and Their Analogues Using Symmetry-Adapted Perturbation Theory.

Here, we summarize the general use of the symmetry-adapted perturbation theory (SAPT) toward empirical prediction of the energy (and splitting when present) of the Qx- and Qy-bands in a large variety of substituted phthalocyanines (Pcs) and their analogues (i.e., tetraazaporphyrins (TAPs), naphthalocyanines (Ncs), and anthracocyanines (Acs)). It was shown that SAPT can be used as a reliable and quick empirical tool for the accurate (within 0.05 eV) estimation of both Qx- and Qy-band energies and splittings. Simple empirical rules for a 24 nm redshift per added benzene ring at the β,β'-position

Extending Orbital-Optimized Density Functional Theory to L-Edge XPS and Beyond: Spin-Orbit Coupling via Nonorthogonal Quasi-Degenerate Perturbation Theory.

Quantum mechanical calculations of core electron binding energies (CEBEs) are relevant to interpreting X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Orbital-optimized density functional theory (OO-DFT) accurately predicts K-edge CEBEs but is challenged by the presence of significant spin-orbit coupling (SOC) at L- and higher edges involving inner-shell orbitals with nonzero angular momentum. To extend OO-DFT to L-edges and higher, our method utilizes scalar-relativistic, spin-restricted open-shell OO-DFT to construct a minimal, quasi-degenerate basis of core-hole states corresponding to a chosen inn…

Quantitative intraoperative assessment of fronto-orbital advancement and remodelling in craniosynostosis.

PURPOSE: Intraoperative morphometric analysis provides immediate feedback for evaluating surgical outcomes in infants with craniosynostosis undergoing fronto-orbital advancement and remodelling. However, current intraoperative assessment primarily relies on surgeon's judgement and clinical experience. This study aimed to develop a computational method for comprehensive analysis of detailed morphological features in the intraoperative 3D surface scan acquired with a structured-light handheld scanner. METHODS: Our method consists of three stages: First, we computed cephalometric measurements, s…

Case Report: Orbital and intracranial inflammatory syndrome in rheumatoid arthritis.

PURPOSE: To describe a case of rheumatoid arthritis (RA)-associated orbital and intracranial inflammatory disorder (OIID). BACKGROUND: RA is a systemic autoimmune disease associated with a multitude of extra-articular manifestations. Cigarette smoking increases the risk of RA vasculitis and adversely influences the expression of the proto-oncogene p53 in RA. Although ocular manifestations of RA are well known, orbital and intracranial inflammatory presentations are much less common. CASE PRESENTATION: A 63-year-old woman with seropositive RA and a significant tobacco smoking history presente…

Identification of topological information from orbits in area-preserving maps.

We have developed a numerical method to identify invariant-circle families in island-around-island hierarchies and distinguish island regions (including sticky layers) from the surrounding chaotic sea in area-preserving maps. The method uses a rotation-angle representation constructed with delay coordinates, estimates rotation numbers with an evaluated error bound, determines resonance mode numbers of island chains, and classifies orbit types through sparse sampling of the waveform of the rotation angle. Validity tests were performed using the standard map, with benchmarks against widely used …

Modulating the luminescence of a macrocyclic donor by customizing the orbital energies of acceptors.

We developed a strategy of customizing acceptor orbital energies to modulate the luminescence of a macrocyclic donor. Through modulation of acceptor orbital levels, the emission of the macrocyclic donor PY[2] is continuously tuned from blue to orange. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction and theoretical calculations confirm that altering the electronic properties of the acceptor regulates frontier-orbital energy gaps of the donor-acceptor complexes to diversify emission colors.

[Magnetic resonance imaging of the orbital cavity: indications and diagnostic possibilities].

Today, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is considered the diagnostic tool of choice for eye and orbital pathologies. In this article, the MR image characteristics of relevant pathologies are illustrated using case-based examples in the context of clinical findings.Vascular pathologies (such as capillary hemangioma and cavernous venous malformation), inflammatory diseases (such as endocrine orbitopathy), and neoplasms (such as lymphoma, uveal melanoma, retinoblastoma, and ocular/orbital metastasis) are described. Additionally, the role of MRI in acute clinical settings and trauma is discussed.T…

Topological Robustness of Orbital Angular Momentum Entanglement in Stochastic Channels.

Orbital angular momentum (OAM) entanglement gives access to multiple qubit and high dimensional Hilbert spaces but is unfortunately susceptible to disturbance, decaying in real-world noisy channels. Here, we show that an underlying topology arising from OAM entanglement remains robust to such channels, which we demonstrate using atmospheric turbulence-exemplary of stochastic or chaotic media. Using a quantum channel with various turbulence strengths, we find that the OAM topological observable is preserved even though the OAM itself is shown to be highly sensitive to the turbulence. We show th…

Visualizing electron flow at transition states by natural reaction orbitals.

Transition-state analysis in quantum chemistry provides structural and energetic information but does not directly reveal how electron density is redistributed at the onset of bond reorganization. Although frontier-orbital theory is highly effective for predicting reactivity from reactant molecules, it is less suited to transition states, where bond-breaking and bond-forming processes are already underway. Here, we show that natural reaction orbital (NRO) analysis provides a response-based framework for directly visualizing electron flow at transition states. By extracting the dominant occupie…

Magnon-Mediated Orbital Torque Switching through an Antiferromagnetic Insulator.

Magnon-mediated spin-orbit torque (SOT) has emerged as a promising mechanism for efficient magnetization control in spintronic devices. Here, we provide experimental evidence for magnon-mediated orbital torque─the orbital analogue of magnon-mediated SOT. We demonstrate that the current-induced torque in Ti/NiO/CoPt heterostructures is governed by the orbital Hall effect in the Ti layer and exhibits a strong dependence on the antiferromagnetic ordering of NiO, indicating the magnon-mediated transport of orbital angular momentum through the antiferromagnetic insulator. Notably, the magnon-mediat…

Orbital reconstruction and electrical transport behaviors of Ti-doped MgV2O4.

Polycrystalline MgV2-xTixO4powders were synthesized by the solid-state reaction method. It is found that the resistivity does not decrease monotonically with increasing Ti concentration. During the doping process, the t2gelectrons from Ti3+are transferred to the t2gorbitals of V3+through the 2p orbitals of oxygen, which suppress the original complex orbital order of (dyz±dzx)/and thereby induces orbital reconstruction. For 0 ⩽x⩽ 1.0, as the Ti doping concentration increases, more V3+is converted to V2+. In the low-temperature region, the Mott characteristic temperatureT0decreases, indicating t…

Assessing the Area Deprivation Index in Relation to Orbital Floor Fractures.

OBJECTIVES: Social determinants of health are acknowledged as significant factors affecting trauma occurrence, severity, and outcomes. The area deprivation index (ADI) is a validated tool that combines social determinants into a single measure of "neighborhood disadvantage." We aimed to investigate whether ADI was linked to injury severity and other clinical benchmarks in orbital floor fracture patients. METHODS: Patients presenting to a single Level 1 Emergency Department with acute orbital floor fracture were reviewed. Data on additional trauma, length of stay (LOS), and follow-up attendanc…

Pediatric growing orbital roof fracture with ptosis: a case report.

The majority of pediatric skull fractures are minimally displaced and can usually be managed conservatively. A rare but serious complication is the development of a growing skull fracture (GSF), that may lead to significant sequelae including orbital meningoencephalocele or neurological impairments. We report a 6-year-old boy who initially presented with right-sided traumatic ptosis and a minimally displaced right orbital roof "blow-up" fracture following minor head trauma. This injury subsequently progressed into a growing orbital roof fracture, complicated by the development of an orbital me…

Advancements in Design and Application of Absorbable Materials for Orbital Fracture Reconstruction.

Orbital fractures are a common type of maxillofacial trauma, and their functional and aesthetic reconstruction has long posed challenges in surgical repair. Traditional implant materials (such as autogenous bone, titanium mesh, and porous polyethylene) carry risks of long-term foreign body retention and associated complications. Absorbable materials overcome the drawbacks of permanent implants by providing temporary mechanical support during healing while gradually degrading, representing a significant advancement in orbital fracture repair. This article systematically reviews the design advan…

Endoscopic Uninostril Transnasal Transethmoidal Excision of an Orbital Apex Lesion.

Orbital apex lesions present significant surgical challenges due to their deep location and proximity to critical neurovascular structures. The endoscopic uninostril transnasal transethmoidal approach offers a minimally invasive alternative to traditional open techniques. We demonstrate the technical nuances, feasibility, and outcome of endoscopic uninostril transnasal transethmoidal excision of an orbital apex lesion using a case example, emphasizing key anatomical landmarks, dissection techniques, and strategies to avoid complications. The approach provides direct access to the orbital apex …
